Gizmo Games DS9 Dominion Wars Licensing

Curious on whether we're ever going to see any of the designs from this game in STO.

  • You've got the Federation Achilles; an excellent Escort-Destroyer
  • You've got the Klingon Kvort'cha; no doubt to fulfill a suitable Raptor role

... and then you've got the Cardassian Norin (Escort?), Cardassian Tonga (Flight Deck Cruiser?) and the Cardassian Hutet (Dreadnought Carrier?) ... I know we don't have a Cardassian Faction yet, but if/when

Are (or rather, would) Cryptic be able to use any of these? Whilst it isn't a direct replica, the Jem Hadar Heavy Escort somewhat resembles the Jem Hadar War Cruiser from this game already, and we've the Jem Hadar Strike Cruiser that could/would also go toward a more varied Dominion Fleet (especially if the Dominion are featured more as we head on into the Iconian story).

There's going to be a point in the story that the Dominion will aid us. They'd have to, if no other reason that to preserve their own existence.

    Short answer is no.

Longer answer is that even though CBS owns the licensing for Star Trek, the developer of that games still owns the creative license for any material used in that game. It would take a great deal of lawyering and money to get those in this game.

...that was specifically designed for the game. To use it, they would have to get an agreement with the designers or IP holders of those ships and that would probably include paying them royalties. So there will only ever be ships form the official shows and movies and ships, that Cryptic designed itself.

Does Gizmo Games = Cryptic Games? No?

Well, there's your answer. Wasn't that easy?

Serious dude, you been on the forums how long, and seen how man threads asking for how many ships from other games, and the answer is always the same, so why would this be different:confused:

It's curious, mind you - wondering who actually owns those particular rights at this point. Did Gizmo Industries hold on to them after shutting down Gizmo Games...did they sell them off...hrmm.

flash525, you got that question answered by Dstahl in 2013.
    You.
    Literally.
It was your very own question that was answered back then.
That question even included the Achilles and the K'vort'cha.

    http://community.arcgames.com/en/news/star-trek-online/detail/1017800-ask-cryptic_-january-2013

Q: (flash525) What is the Cryptic's policy where other designs from other games are concerned? The DS9: Dominion Wars game has the Federation Achilles, Klingon K'vorcha and a couple of Cardassian designs, the ST: Armada game has the Romulan Griffin and Shrike, along with a bunch of other Cardassian and Klingon designs. I'm sure there are other Trek games out there with further designs. Are we ever likely to see any of these within STO?

Dstahl: Good question. Our license with CBS is restricted to the TV Shows, the movies (up to Nemesis), the Animated Series, and some of the book fiction. Unfortunately, this license doesn’t extend to other video games. However, if those ships or factions appeared in any of the previously mentioned properties, then it is fair game.

Please tell me what more than that do you need?
Someone from Cryptic answered your very own question.

I know, right? I'm reminded of a joke about a man watching a football game, only to be told he's watching the replay of last night's game, and he replies "But I figure if I watch again, my team might win this time."

I'm also shocked by how rude people are in this thread. This isn't a "T5 Connie" thread. It's just about some guy who forgot the answer to his own question. It happens. Some of us aren't blessed with the photographic memory of others. :)

We've had ships from books, and from competitions. It isn't a stretch to think that maybe CBS/Cryptic might be able to acquire the license for ships of other games.

Just because you remember a specific thing, doesn't mean everyone else is going to. We all remember different things, about different events. We're no collective.

Except for that minor detail that there have been many, many requests for ships from other games and they've all gotten the same response like a mantra. That makes it more like Einstein's commentary on doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

If I recall, there were many, many requests for the Vesta, and we eventually got it.

No, but it helps when you remember a point that you...
    1.) asked about
2.) asked about again a year later

...because it's appearently something you deem important enough to ask about.
Twice. So you find it at least as interesting and/or important as I do.
Forgot stuff you don't care about? Dont care.;)
And yeah having ships from other games would be awesome.
But that's the point. You care at least as much as a lot of others on these forums.
And I'm pretty sure if someone from the Cryptic staff had answered their question(s) they'd remember because they care, like you do.

I don't mean to be rude, but if I did in fact remember, do you really think I'd be asking the question again?

Edit: I should state that I know (from memory) that the topic of these ships has been brought up before, but I don't/didn't remember what answers (if any) had been given in response to the question.

Why should we assume you are any different from all the others that keeps repeating questions expecting a different answer.
    Because I'm not?

If I ask a question, and I get an answer that I remember, I wont ask the question again. It really is that simple with me.

Considering you can't even piece a sentence together properly, that's irony in it's purest form.

Apparently some of us aren't blessed with common sense either.

You don't need to remember a question asked a year ago to have the common sense to realize that Cryptic/PWE can't use the property of another company unless they

    A. Bought the rights to use it, and
    B. Have permission from CBS to use it.

Apparently some of us don't know others are not well versed in the legal world. Not everyone has the same level of knowledge that you (or at least claim to) have. I understand if CBS doesn't have the rights and/or does not allow Cryptic to use an asset, Cryptic cannot use it. Perhaps flash didn't know that, nor remembered. That is still not a valid excuse to speak rudely to him.

Also, common sense is hardly common these days.
