where did the "academy scanning" event go? where do i make dils, now i get 450 dils if i answer question tests correctly.
making 6k dil was a nice boost in every once awhile, but making 450 dils a day just kill my entertianment with STO, grinding for hours which i dont have time for it.
if the devs took it out, then it feel like STO just died and not knowing.
it is part of STO's fabric of reality and few ways to earn for newer and better ships, now it is very slow and depressing to have feel forced to repeat thousand and thousand times to earn very small amount compared to hourly events.
most of PvE missions, and combat missions are all on cool-down timers, it doesnt make sense to pull out hourly events while folks are waiting for next timers expired, what we do? play for 15 mins after missions are done and log out to watch tv and get back on hour later?
most of episodes were done several times, and it need fresh items for new ships and new away team officers.
what about crafting mission that was in hourly event? gone too
right now, as i have seen, most are doing "reputations" for several factions for upgrades and ranks, and that is very slow progress, made me feel i have to move on to other games once i do few things so often with STO, and then play something else.
now i just wait for summer event...
it was little too late for me to do those Mirror event, been away for awhile to help someone in need.
I miss hourlies too. I like the weekends, because that's when I log on most often, but the hourlies were nice when I was bored on a lunch break or something.
Aside from a few foaming-at-the-mouth fanbois, most of us do.
But don't worry, if we're lucky they'll do another Bonus Marks event in the next 2-3 months to make up for not having multiple hours of Bonus Marks per week. You know, like giving us 4 2014 dimes for 8 rare 1940's nickels because it's so perfectly equivalent.
Removal of the hourly events was a mistake. I honestly dont understand how they thought it was a good idea.. I mean.. Dafuq...
It's only good for them. We come after their profits.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
Removal of the hourly events was a mistake. I honestly dont understand how they thought it was a good idea..
It's good for their bottom line, and everything else comes second after that. Bar none. That's how they thought it was a good idea, because it helped the only thing that matters to them. The fact that the only thing it added to the game was suckage is, to quote the Borg, irrelevant.
It was a major nerf to the accumulation of resources. 25% more marks 6 hours out of a day every day is a clear winner compared to 50% more marks one weekend out of a month for all but the most grindy of weekend warriors. Cryptic makes changes at the speed of molasses, so to gut daily events in favor of weekend events so abruptly after a single positive reception to bonus Dyson weekend is highly irregular. It would have been one thing if they were added in addition to, but, like the mirror event, it is a replacement for the one of old. A much less efficient replacement at that.
I'm unconvinced they gutted the whole daily events because one or two of them were being ignored. I mean, obviously trade skill bonus hour was going to be disregarded. Cryptic hasn't done anything to make trade skills relevant to the modern end game! THAT is your "fix" to daily events cryptic, make the unpopular events popular by making the irrelevant meta games they're attached to relevant. Yet they gutted the whole thing, widely played events and all instead? A solution like that is like taking a hammer to a TRIBBLE. Sadly when players such as myself grind the hell out of these weekend events in a desperate attempt to make up a small fraction of the shortfall of this change, Cryptic holds up those participation numbers as validation that they were right all along. Talk about a self fulfilling prophecy.
But enough beating around the bush. We all fully well know Cryptic isn't stupid. Maybe a little out of touch sometimes, we all got a great gaffaw out of their latest justification for the Valdore console. But hilarity like that aside, they aren't stupid. They KNOW this isn't a solution the fanbase wanted. At the very least it should have been in addition to instead of a replacement. This was about making in game resource accumulation seem slower and less viable compared to spending cash for zen, nothing more. It's the same reason why tour the universe was nerfed. They don't want you earning a good energy credit income in game, they want you spending cash on zen and selling keys and fleet ship modules for your income instead. It's nothing more and nothing less than that.
If they do weekly events, they should at least do them EVERY weekend. Most people have free time at the weekend, give them more incentive to spend them in STO, Cryptic. You could think about all kinds of weekends, that shouldn't be too hard to implement. What about a "double reputation" event for four days. What about a "support your fleet" event, that gives fleets short projects, that only need fleet marks, so people can actually spend all the fleet marks they collect on something?
I used to like the academy event also but i cant say i will miss it that much because of the very few times i ever got to play it.
whenever i looked at the hourly events i usually found that it had been on in the afternoon when i was in work or wasnt on till 3am when i was tucked up in bed.
the little dilithium i ever made in the half dozen times i actually did get to play it was more then made up for by the dilithium weekend and then 10 times over.
that was the biggest problem with the hourlys and that is why when they looked at the stats they found that hardly anyone was playing them.
I think if you could compare the stats for the weekend events you would find that nearly everyone has benifited from most of them even if they dont like to admit it.
they may even do an academy event weekend when you will be able to play it for as often and as long as you want and earn mega loads of dilithium.
if you go to the academy you will see that the npc that awards your dilithium is still there so i guess they must have somthing planned.

its only fair to have a long weekend fortnightly, to allow some players the opertunity to play thursday, friday or monday if they cant play at all on saturday and sunday rather then have it every week on just saturday and sunday.
10 special days out of 28 is better then 8 days out of 28 or are you saying you would prefer 20 special days out of 28 but then they would not be very special would they.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
One thing I wish they would convert to a Calendar is those Borg Red/Tholian Red Alerts.
I hate flying through Sirius and seeing Borg Cubes everywhere and thinking "meh, they are toast". Because if you actually join a red alert they are empty.
I agree with Bobbydazlers that the hourlies were hardly played. You had to be lucky to catch an event at the right time.
I think Cryptic is trying to control how much time people are investing into a particular part of the game. They want people to stay in the game longer so they need to ensure that people can't gain currencies too quickly.

Um...cryptic doesn't want you to stay in the game longer. If they did they would spend more time making new content rather than fixing old content.
More content for a single character.
Cryptic only wants you to show up once a day and do one thing. That is the F2P mantra.
The removal of the hourly events doesn't bother me personally, but I have noticed a lot fewer members of my fleet logging on. No hourly events and three successive grinds in a row has led many to say they're feeling burnt out. I know I'm logging in less.

I rather like to think how I would think if I had made this game, I would want all players to have a good chance to play all the missions and events they wanted to play and that I had provided especially if it was a special event I would want a large amount of players to take part and benefit from it.
say on average most players play for 2 hours, after they have done all their daily stuff they have maybe 1 hour free this means that if they choose to play an hourly event the most that will play it is 1/24 of the total player base, realistically it will be far less then that as many will for one reason or another not play it and do something unrelated to the event and also many do not play the game every day anyway so what is the good of that.
far better to run the event over a much longer duration even over 4 or 5 days, much more chance that players will play and benefit from the special event at some point over that period plus it is much easier to make players aware that a special event is coming up and when it will run, plus much easier for players to plan when over that period they could benefit by taking part in it, you only have to look at the amount of players that partake in the summer and winter event for proof of that.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,

yeah, noticed that less players very recently since hourly were gone, been away for personal business, and then came back to find out some of fleet memebers just left STO and lot of leadership shake-ups confusing those who came back with new leaders who are strangers to returning players.
i am kinda mad too, once i like the game concept and the foundation made me decide to get lifetime account, but now i feel that i regretted for having Cyrptic to pull "Bait and Switch" tactic tricks on players, which it isnt very nice. right now, the direction the game is heading to something feel isnt right way.
weekly seem okay, but it feel like one shot and then wait several weeks for next "favorite" event that we want, and that is too long and slow, most just want hourly on off-hours.
now i see some chats in game, "Thanks for running the fleet, see you all later in a week" instead of see you all tommorrow.
1. epidoses, old series, need fresh item rotations for rewards, as of now, it all just "credit runs" farm status.
2. anonomly scannings, where are the "rares"? a stack of 4's isnt exciting, it more unfun chores than hourly space scanning events are more fun because you never know what rares we get.
3. dilithium minings, it is just a "hit or miss" to some players, it take awhile for players to feel and get in timing on track to get more dils, weekend event will create some players to forget the rythym due to long inactivity by waiting for events for weeks.
4. at least, the crafting, it need boost.
add the new ideas for craftings...make some specific gears and weapons with "sockets" as special enchantments similar to Neverwinter's enchantment runes, so we can call them as "Artifacts" like as seen with Captain Picard's link with ancient flute.
there are so many worlds that were inhabited and lives were snuff out by virus, change of star's and planet raditations that wipe out civilizations from long forgotten times, or wars that wipe out alien races, or abandoned the birth worlds.
by the way, (edited), by losing the fav hourly events make harder to earn something they need, personally, i feel it is wrong and this give company a full control a "game" for what is, with the items they posted on Zen markets or Dils vendors seem lot harder for honest players to earn proper ways and now they feel that was no choice for players to turn to 3rd party market to get zens and dils illegally and had no choice to be banned if they get caught, make me wonder if Cryptic/PWE are looking for excuse to cut the accounts?
I would like the hourly events back -- perhaps not all of them; some were obviously not very popular (although the ending of the Fed-Klingon War and the consequent removal of the faction-limited queues would help with that to some extent).

The academy event was probably one of the worst returns for time invested to get dilithium. In about 1 hour of gaming you can get enough dilithium to hit the 8k refining cap. Do a foundry mission, i can run sword of k^&%*&^% in about 5 mins..2k dilithium, 2.4k if i afk for about 5 mins during the mission. Mining both asteroids takes about 12 mins, 2k more. Run ISE less than 10 mins and 960 dil + 60 marks(600dilithium) 1-11 BNP's each worth 200 dilithium so that works up to 1760 to 3760 from one ISE and less than 10 mins. Do a loot mission like battleship bashing and get 750 dil and 350k+ ec's in 5 mins. There are many more.
It was a major nerf to the accumulation of resources. 25% more marks 6 hours out of a day every day is a clear winner compared to 50% more marks one weekend out of a month for all but the most grindy of weekend warriors.

their 'stated reason' was a sad, sad joke. we all know how slow cryptic is to make changes to old stuff... very slow indeed.
They took them out to slow us down, increase the grind, etc.
I'm still thinking hourly events and the new weekend events not to be mutually exclusive. One 3 hour bonus mark event every day and one weekend event once in 3 month is not excessive. Keep the more prominent hourly events and skip the other ones. You don't have to fill in every single hour of the day.
