Direct3D?

Noob question:

What exactly does change with the "Direct 3D" options in the video menu? I have a Radaeon R9 290x and pretty good other hardware, too. But if I chose Direct3D 11 the game is unplayable because of low FPS. Direct3D 9ex works, but the FPS aren't very good, either.
That leaves me with Direct3D 9.
Are there any actual graphical differences?

The only thing that changes, as far as i know, is the treatment of the antialiasing effect. With directx 11, you can choose a new method to use AA, but honestly its even worst than using the old one. I always used DX11 cuz i dont have any problems with it, but i dont think there is a noticeable difference at all. Details like shadows, ambiental oclusion and other things are really bad implemented in STO. In fact, i needed to disable the ambiental oclusion cuz it was embarrasing, it was so horrible that it didnt even look like shadow oclusion in the game and it was just getting my performance away. Same for the shadows. I didnt deactivate em, but they are really bad made in this game, unfortunately. You should try to use DX11 but disable ambiental oclusion (is useless in this game, good job cryptic...) and depth of field.

If your game runs smoothly with DX9, and you dont have a problem at all, just dont change to dx11. The "improvements" are almost zero. And because cryptic never told us what the hell changes with dx11, i guess a lot of people still uses dx9, cuz there is no reason to change. I have a great computer and i never suffered low fps issues on DX11, but i never used it cuz it was better or worst than dx9 lol. I guess i use it cuz, as other people i "assume" the graphic quality is better, but in the real world. . i dont have a clue lol.

Anyways, a lot of games need a really good computer to use DX11. I dunno why is this, even if makes no sense at all, but it is true. I dunno if it is the case of STO, but i will not be surprised..

Also remember that you can't even use DX11 unless your gfx card supports it. I have an old card that can't, so if I choose that option my frame rates and graphics go into oblivion because my cards can't support it. If DX9 is working smooth for you, just leave it as is.
