now i can see true rp'ers not wanting this but can we have an option in the client.
so when us toon swappers go between toons it keeps our chat history and our main account name in our chat. so we stop driving our friends and fleet makes nuts ;)

if its an option to set chat nick then its tied to your account and it would have to be one of your char's
and this would let you play your toons and still hold a civil conversation. heck add it to arc I don't mind but give us a way to chat as us and not let our game mechanics interfere.

the issue is, is the chat you miss and the clean buffer when you switch toons.
be nice to keep the same conversation going

MMO players usually know what they are getting into with a chat system. STO at least has the public account handle system that allows you to associate toons to accounts. There is a chat option to always display account handles. Takes up more room, but worth it.

I think the only way to keep the conversation going while swapping toons and in between maps is to have the chat in a separate program altogether. There are a few ways of having global chat channels accessed though a third party app, but I am not sure on the details.

Of course, a simpler way is to simply announce that you are toon-swapping before leaving the chat and logging off. Same courtesy with announcing Away From Keyboard, Be Right Back, and Bio Breaks. Just keep the other people in the loop with your availability ;) This also solves the clean buffer problem, as a respectable friend will stop typing to you until you have announced that you have gotten back. In a fleet or a global chat room situation, a general "What did I miss?" usually covers it. If you REALLY missed something in the 30 seconds that it takes to change from one toon to another.
