Just got a JHAS from the recent Crew Package promotion. Currently playing Fed Ferengi Engineer.
Didn't open the box yet, want to be sure I use the JHAS ship on the right character type. I assume Tactical is the way to go? Any thoughts on class/race?
Any thoughts? I think I'll mostly engaged with PVE but might dip my toes into PVP down the line.

Thank you.
It is an escort, so using with a tactical officer would get the most out of it. But, it really depends on your play style. Do you fly other escorts with your engineer? You may prefer your eng/escort vs tac/escort. You should think about leveling up a tac or playing one for a while and decide as a JHAS is a rare item to come by.
I have one with a tac officer and its a crit build. I run with 4 AP DHCs up front, the cutting beam and the 360 AP beam and a turret in the back, crit boffs, crit rep consoles, crit tac consoles, crit rep passives, crit skills, plasmonic leach, a warp core with AMP... Once I start lacing into things and the power levels rise to 75+ on all four systems... I just blow stuff up with impunity... Its nice. Not sure how much fun you could have with an Eng,

If you are building a character based on a particular ship, then all you need to do is consider the space traits and space abilities for your captain. Alien seems to include all the regular space traits and Human, Joined Trill, and Liberated Borg give an additional space skill bonus. Nausicaan gives 2% more damage and +10 perception. However Joined Trill requires a C-Store purchase I think and Liberated Borg requires the Lifetime Subscription which costs between $200 to $300 which make these races undesirable for some.
I've never used an Escort. Only Cruisers with my Engineer so far. I like the Cruisers so far, but I haven't tried anything else to compare against. I wouldn't mind doing more damage as I feel like I'm mostly a tank at the moment, so the Escort was appealing. As you can probably tell, I'm somewhat new to the game, so these questions may be a bit silly to someone experienced.
I like your idea though, I can start a new Tactical, try him out with early Tier Escorts and see how I enjoy it. However, as a general rule, am I correct in assuming Escorts should be used for a Tactical? I did search before posting and that was the vibe I got, but I felt like I should confirm before committing to the new character.
Assuming I go tactical, is there any opinion on Race/Alliance? I've enjoy playing for Feds, but I assume the other alliances have different story arcs that could be interesting to play, instead of redoing the Fed stuff I've already done.
EDIT: Nevermind on the Tactical w/ Escort question, just re-read your post. Thanks for confirming.
I'll take a look at those traits. It wasn't clear if that was Ground or Space when I was lurking through the New Character build. Maybe it applies to both. I will take a closer look.
Besides the Liberated Borg, is there a general favorite for Tactical Escort Captains? The Trill bonuses seem nice. Willing to pay the $6 to get it if thats ideal.
As a general rule, any class can fly any ship. I myself have a Tactical in a Cruiser, giving me a very nice offensive/defensive balance. But it just depends on what you want.
Tactical officers boost damage on all ships. Engineering officers increases survivability on all of your ships. Science officers can debuff enemies, buff allies and call in photonic ships.
The JHAS is an Escort with quite some tanking potential (same hull and eng console level as any endgame cruiser). If you want to max out its damage, Tactical is the way to go. Want to be very hard to kill? Get that Engineer in. Want to shoot on stuff while supporting yourself and your team? Get a sci in that bug.
But yeah, try out a new tactical. At level 40, go for the Patrol Escort, since the boff layout is similar to the JHAS.
And if you go tactical, Romulan is the way to go. Their innate abilities, as well as those of their bridge officers, can rock the DPS out. Next to that, you can choose at level 10 wheter to be a Fed allied or a KDF allied rommie.
And never, ever assume questions are silly for experienced players. We are all here to help you, so don't feel silly for a second. Not knowing something isn't a sign of stupidity, not asking is.
I will look further into Romulan for a tactical build. I assume you meant faction and species (so no Alien or Reman). Any opinion on siding with Fed or KDF? I'm leaning towards KDF just to try something different from Fed, but this character I'm mostly interested in getting maximum use out of the JHAS, as I know they aren't easy to come by. So I don't mind doing Fed stuff again if it makes this character better aligned to the ship, I can deal with story lines with another character.
Also appreciate the support! Just got into the game a month or so ago and having a blast. Must admit it was quite intimidating at first but thanks to lurking on the forums, I've been piecing things together. I know the knowledge will come with time. Thanks again.
Thank you snoggymack22.
A Romulan Alien sounds fun too as I can get creative with the look. It sounds like the Romulan species traits might be better for what I'm looking for though.
Haha, a Pakled Science Captain... I can want what I want and look for things to make us go!

There is Covert Operative for Romulans which gives more crit chance and crit severity, but most of their unique traits are oriented around Warbirds like their innate trait, part of Covert Operative, and Singularity Specialist. So you could go with KDF-aligned Romulan to experience different content. As a Romulan you can't use Tier 5 Starfleet and KDF ships, but you can use any Starfleet or KDF ship below Tier 5.
After looking into Romulan faction more, I do see people bring up Rom BOFF as a big advantage over KDF/Fed. I also read that Romulans have a defensive bonus that can stack on top of the JHAS/Escort bonus for further defense. Other races won't have access to that. While all factions can do well, it seems like Romulan is the way to go for this Escort ship I'm speccing out.
Thanks again starkaos.
Sounds like early-mid game, I might have an advantage with going KDF-aligned since my traits are more aligned with the ships available to me. But since I might end up with the JHAS @ Tier 5, is it safe to assume during end game, theres no advantage to being on other side and its only a matter of story/content? Is the gear I can get from Fed/KDF for an Escort/JHAS about equal?
KDF has an easier method to gain contraband, which can be converted to dilithium, than the Federation side. However, due to the popularity of the Fed side over the KDF Side, certain Public Queues will take longer on the KDF side than on the Fed side.
The endgame gear is the same for both sides since endgame gear is just Reputation and Fleet gear. Before Season 7, the MACO sets was confined to the Fed side and Honor Guard sets was confined to the KDF Side, but that is no longer a concern with the addition of the Adapted MACO and Adapted Honor Guard sets.

Err ... I would not use a Romulan for 2 simple reasons.
First Romulans have racial bonus on cloaking and the JHAS lacks it and second is singularity powers.
Romulans are better on Warbirds period and there is no point on using a JHAS with one.
They are still better in a bugship as they can select a trait to give more crit and use 5 superior op boffs for even more crit. They can still select most other space traits. Romulans race and faction are the best outside of warbirds also due to them being OP compared to the other 2 factions.

There is the Covert Operative trait for Romulan Captains with the Superior Romulan Operative trait for Bridge Officers which gives the JHAS a bonus to crit damage and crit severity. That is enough reason for a Romulan to fly a ship other than a Warbird.

A very bad reason. Yes SRO gives crit, but that's like saying any ship would be better with a Romulan pilot. While technically true, when you're actually playing a Romulan the real question should be which ship is the best for a Romulan?, and it's certainly not the bug ship, there's no reason a Romulan should pick any escort over a warbird.

It is true though. At this point in the game's life, without any more specific desire (such as a heavy interest in PVP science), a tactical Romulan captain is literally the best choice for any ship, let alone the JHAS. It's true that the JHAS is pretty redundant next to the best warbirds and the assorted cloak bonuses aren't getting used, but the extra crit and defense from a romulan crew and captain are still far more potent on their own than any other racial bonuses the other factions can offer.
Specific allegiance matters less, but there's really no reason not to go Klingon with a romulan since they basically get all the upsides of the faction (much better hangar bays and elite fleet weapons, contraband-spewing marauding instead diplomacy doff missions, etc) and none of the downsides (except slower fleet action queues I guess.)
Thank you all. I agree that some of the Warbirds are pretty strong and in someways comparable to the JHAS. That Fleet Ha'feh is a beast!
During my research I think the key difference/advantage is that JHAS is classed as an Escort instead of a Warbird, so as an Escort it gets an additional 10% damage reduction the Warbird doesn't have.
I must admit though, during my quick session yesterday, the cloak and singularity is pretty cool! I've still got a while to go before I could unpack the JHAS. So if I find I can't go without Cloak/Singularity, I might have to save the JHAS for another toon, hahah.
Anyway, I got to the point where I choose between Fed & KDF before I turned it off yesterday. Somewhat torn between the two but leaning KDF. On my Level 50 guy, I found myself spending most of the time doing Omega and other Fleet Actions. Concerned that KDF won't have enough players to consistently be able to do that.
IMO I belive in playing to your ships weakness and I find playing engineer in escorts great because you can keep them alive longer with the skills that come with an engineer captain and I understand you won't get the same DPS as you would with a Tac captain but I run and JHAS on my Orion Engineer and a Kumari on my Fed engineer and have get success and rarely die, just my option.
Also becareful I have a Rom Tac on KDF and some the of the Doffs I really need to use are mighty expensive to get Klingon side. Marion Dulmar (DEM Doff) was like 80 Million EC week before lol but I still have his as my Main my doff compliment just is lacking.

No Drama, No Fuss, Just good old fashioned pew pew!

Story wise I always found in incredibly easy to pick the KDF, the Feds offer nothing but mistrust and prejudice.
For the FEs:
Crystalline and the "Omega" stuff (I just assume you mean the STFs) are cross faction, you won't have problems there. I believe that are the "Main" FEs.
In other Fleet actions, like star base defense, yes there might be trouble in bound.
When I made my rom I stared as a KDF, then abandoned that character of for that very reason in favor a fed romulan... which was regretted quickly abandoned to return to the KDF character, since the most important stuff (I think) is cross faction and KDF simply has better stuff.
Especially if you already HAVE a fed character its always nice to have a KDF alt.
If you really catch a bad day and don't find groups, just go back to the other one.
Also there are several KDF grouping channels that help.
Just got a JHAS from the recent Crew Package promotion. Currently playing Fed Ferengi Engineer.

I would be sorely tempted to sell it, if I won one. The escort is not significantly better than other, less valuable escorts -- it has a cool look, but its just an escort. The main reason to have it seems to be if you wanted the carrier pets for a JH carrier, rather than to have a half-billion+ EC escort.
If you do want to use it as an escort, *CONSIDER* that you may ALSO want to get the carrier later and build a character that will do well in both ships.
Tactical is the obvious choice for escorts and the dps carrier. SCI seems weak; all the JH ships lack sci officers and it just seems a poor fit all the way around. Engineers do well in escorts -- keeping them alive and feeding the weapons with power. So either tac or eng, depends on if you want all out damage or a balanced approach.
Alien race seems logical to me -- you can pick from most of the traits and build a very strong character. If no race has a compelling trait that you cant get as an alien, go alien. You can *look* like most of the other races (can't do cat race, and gorn may be a challenge) or something totally different.

Yeah I would uncertain if I'd sell or to keep it for getting the bug frigates.
But ultimately... You get more ec for it then I'll ever have in that game, so I'd probably sell it.
However: the bug frigates only work on the jem hadar dreadnought, which is, I believe, very heavy on tactical abilities. ( in fact it is the only lockbox/loby ship I'd be interested to have..and if I'll use it on a tac.)
So I believe a tactical char would work fine.
Something to think about if you like flying cruisers is getting the Jem Dread Carrier. I was lucky enough to obtain both ships and I enjoy flying the Carrier more then the Bugship itself. I am a Lib Borg Engineer and I have huge DPS and one hell of a tank on top of it where I find the Bugship to hit hard but die a lot faster.
It all depends on your play style and how you like to fly but I will mention this. Having the Bugship for the Carrier really ups your DPS and looks awesome as well.

Vorta! Cardassian! Maybe even Jem'hadar!
KDF Romulans have the most Cardassian-like uniform options.

Yes, the carrier is tac heavy but you can use it with engineer as well. Both could do awesome in both ships (carrier and escort).
You could buy at least 5 and as many as 8 lobi or lockbox ships from one bug, or enough fleet modules to get several fleet ships as well. Its just hard to justify keeping it unless you are already rich or want to use the carrier.

Haven't seen it myself but I heard you can push the bugs defense so high that it is literally impossible to hit it (147 % defense).
But for myself... bug is nice, I'd take and use it (especially on my main KDF since I really have nothing for him to fly and this was once my real MAIN and favorite character....) if I would get my hands on it and if it had less exchange value.
But as your example shows, selling it would mean more ec then I could ever spent, its nice but probably not THAT nice....
I came across one of those item-sell websites (by accident I wound not by anything on such a website) and while other lockbox ships are around 50 there (sure 50 bugs for a per character purchase...)... the bug did cost more then 200.
