IS it possible to introduce Tier III Skill trainers for BoFF skills?
Surely with the vast number of NPC Admirals and Generals in the game, someone other than your Captain has learned these skills?
It can be problematic (and just annoying) sometimes, finding a trustworthy and willing player with the correct skills to trade with.
Could we not have certain NPC's, perhaps in some of the higher Tier content zones, like Bajor, or New Romulus, or the Dyson Sphere who, for a high/er price, offers training in theses skills?
Or perhaps an account wide "School" attached to the account bank for instance, that you can "send" your BoFF to, and have an Alt. train them? (NOT use them, just train them)
Meh, it's relatively cheap (though maybe not easy) to find a Blue or Purple BOFF on the exchange with the skill you want, and have them train up your officer.
However, I would probably use an option like this.

Some Tier III skills are Captain Only. This is especially bad if you have unique BoFFs that can't be traded.

Well ... SOME of them are cheap, particularly the Fed/Fed aligned side but for Rom/KDF/KDF aligned, it's a bit more problematic and EXPENSIVE! ...
There are also some skills which, for reasons only the 'Most Holy' and Cryptic knows, there are certain Tier 3 skills which never appear on Rom Fraction / KDF Faction BoFF's, not matter how hard you look.

Exactly! ... I bring it up only, because I have a KDF aligned Sci Rom captain, and I wanted to try out a Scimitar/Falchion as a "Beam Boat" ... All good, except I cannot get BFAW3 and also cannot get APB3 ...
Most frustrating part is that I have a Rom Tac Alt who has BFAW3 and CRF3, however there is no way to let that Capt. train a BoFF on my Sci main.
I also didn't realise that there was a related/similar discussion in the General Forum ... Sorry for the double up of Topics mods.
I'd really like to see this as a fleet project. It would be nice if we could go to our base and have an NPC that would train all skills.
Or just allow joined Boffs to be traded via the account bank. That would probably be good enough for most.
A Fleet project, I could see as an option, if the Skill Trainer there had access to Tier 3 abilities, it would make even more sense, and give even more incentive to upgrade the various "skills" ...
Hmmm, not sure about 'commissioned' BoFF's being able to be shared though ... Trained at an account level "school" yes, but you'd probably not want commissioned BoFF's to be easily traded between characters.
I like having a few things that force players to interact a little. I have trained the officers of several folks from the public service channel, and if I see someone looking for something I can do, I will help for free.
Dunno what to say about any scams. IMHO the fix for that would be a "safe trainer" window where the officer and offered tip (or required fee if the person is greedy) are on one side, the skill to be trained on the other, both parties agree and it is done. Given that you can farm a sack full of officers weekly, and that the traded ones cannot be sold on the exchange, it would take a pretty sorry person to steal one in this manner but I suppose there are a few scum anywhere.
I'd rather they just dump the whole idea of captain trained skills and rare boff skills. Just put all the skills onto the NPC trainers. Rare traits will keep boffs desirable. No need for this roundabout way of trying to get skills.

Since the devs are in an uncoupling mood (like with the team abilities CD), they might as well let people train their boffs in tier 3 skills using NPCs. It's frankly an annoyance in this game that doesn't really add to it. They can leave the untrainable and desirable tier 3 skills as-is if they wish to.

This. So very, very this.

I'm sure your DPS is great, but as Kahless said, "a petaQ with high system mastery is still a petaQ." (Well, he should have said it...!)
Often I find even more annoying that I can't find good team members for STFs. Cryptic should implement NPC ships that I could team with. Preferably Borg Cubes.
I feel the player interaction and the need to depend on others is very important for this type of game.
If people want a purely mechanical world, then try single player games.
If you find it difficult to find a trainer, join a good fleet. Again - a group of people working towards a common goal is an important concept to the game.
<snip>I feel the player interaction and the need to depend on others is very important for this type of game.
And yet, probably 90% of the unique content in the game is designed primarily for single/solo players. Whilst I agree that player interaction is good, and having social hubs/zones such a ESD, Qo'nos and now New Rom is great, some things aren't helping the interaction, they are just annoying. (on a side note I'm looking forward to taking my All Orion Slave Girl crew to Nimbus 3 for some Scorpion Bashing, and I'd love it there were more places like this in game)

See above ... Also why should they? If people want to play a Star Trek
IP game , there aren't a lot of choices, but it could be made 'friendlier' for both single play and multi play

I'm in a Fleet, a very, very good one (arguably one of the best in fact) But it still can be difficult to find the right combination of Player Type, Skill Type, Faction, and Time to get something as simple as a skill upgrade ...
The fact that only captains can train certain skills to Tier 3 is, quite frankly, stupid. If they were truly serious about it, then ALL Tier 3 Skills should require a Capt Trainer, and NONE of them would be available on "random" BoFF's.
it probably sounded like a good idea in the beginning ... (coloquially) Back when Tac captains only flew hard hitting escorts, they need the Tier 3 Damage skills, so only Tac captains could train them ... Engi captains only flew Cruisers or Carriers, so having Tier 3 Surviabilty Skills was obvious ... Sci Captains hflew Science Vessels, and ther BoFF's needed thos Tier 3Sci abilites to realy shine ...
But now we have Captains flying ships their not supposed to, like Sci Captains in Destroyers??? Oh the humanity!!! ... An Engi Capt. an Escort? ... Blasphemy!!! (end colloquialism)
The reasons for arbitrary restrictions on abilities are no longer valid, so why not 'remove' them or provide a simple way for Captains to aquire them ... I'd be happy with a Fleet Project for a Tier 3 Trainer ...
Or if you wanted to really stretch it out (and Cryptic allus' does) A Tac Tier 3 Trainer for the Starbase ... an Engi Tier 3 Trainer for the Dil mine .. .And Sci Tier 3 Trainer for the Spire.

Why do people think they deserve to get new and high skills instantly ?
New skills take years to learn and refine !
Where's the hurry ? Keep in mind that you can still play the game with whatever skills the NPC gives you.
Think about it ... once you find somebody, your BOFF can gain instantly a new skill. And it's still not quick enough for you.
You are getting something very valuable and some effort should be required on your part.
Or ... if you are in so much hurry, put down a million credits, and I am sure you'll find a trainer at any time of the day.
Whilst I agree that player interaction is good, and having social hubs/zones such a ESD, Qo'nos and now New Rom is great, some things aren't helping the interaction, they are just annoying...
Fact is that you can get pretty easily access to skills, either through fleet or zone or chat channels.
That's is easily taken care of and that's not the annoyance.
What's annoying is that your trainer needs to have a free slot. But what can you do, Cryptic needs it's zen.
Or if you wanted to really stretch it out (and Cryptic allus' does) A Tac Tier 3 Trainer for the Starbase ... an Engi Tier 3 Trainer for the Dil mine .. .And Sci Tier 3 Trainer for the Spire.
If you insist on the NPC aspect ....
I still don't think it should happen instantly. Something like a doff mission, you leave your BOFF for few days, with a 10,000 dil fee and return to pick it up.
The devs seem to be all about making it easier for people to move between ships and experiment with different builds. Such things encourage people to buy new ships to play with, more ship slots, more Boff slots, etc, and therefore make the game money. The way the Boff skill training is set up is one more impediment to that. It may have made sense under the P2P model, and the original way the skill tree was imagined. At this point though, it adds nothing to the game but irritation, and confusion for new players. How many times have we seen somebody asking how to train a Boff in some high level skill which their skill tree says they have access to? We could just roll our eyes at the n00b, but really that is not obvious at all.
I'd settle for some mechanism to train Boffs between my own characters, but ideally I'd just like to see them all go to the skill trainer and end this nonsense. It's not like Tacs CAN'T get ET3, or Scis CAN'T get APO3, it just makes the process more annoying.
Why do people think they deserve to get new and high skills instantly ?.
Why do people insist on putting words (or letters) into others posts, and insist on making sweeping generalizations and essentially accusing others of being lazy?
(Especially amusing is those same players making this accusation, have posted many times on ways to 'speed up" or even circumvent current game mechanics in order to achieve goals)
...
So ... I like your suggestion of a DoFF mission where you have to send your chosen BoFF away for training, that's a good option/idea! ...
I have no problem with "earning" anything in STO, but there is a point where some things are made difficult, not to make them more valuable in the eyes of the player, but simply to force people to either spend money, or because of outdated game mechanics ... To me it seems the restriction on certain BoFF skills is due to the later.

Like the voth science from the spire reputation, i have him as a ground medic, but there isn't a way to get medical tricorder 3 on him.
