20 Charcater Chat Limit

edited March 2014 in The Academy
Our fleet created a channel that allows us to talk to each other across fleets and factions. We tell fleet mates to type: /channel_join <ourglobalfleetchatnamehere>
This works fine for everyone, except one of our fleet mates who says he can't join the channel because the he is restricted to typing no more then 20 characters in the chat window.

I've never heard of this 20 char limit before. Anyone know how to change it?

Thanks!

    Well, it might be be-

[System]: You are limited to twenty characters.
I would love to visit this star in-game...or maybe this one!
Won't SOMEONE please think of the CHILDREN?!

Yeah... we are aware of the 20 character limit, I was hoping for a way around it.

I'm fairly certain he is a silver member, but most of my fleet mates are Silver and they can all type out full sentences that considerably longer then 20 characters. I didn't have such as restriction when I was Silver.

    He might've spammed.

Well the "just starting out" part is important. New silver players have chat restrictions (although I don't think I've ever heard of 20 characters being one of them) that are lifted after a period of time or acquiring dilithium or zen (I don't recall which, sooo, turn in 5 contraband, trade for a couple zen).

It's possible that he got mass-reported by several people in ESD or wherever for spam.

Instead of performing the /channel_join command he can join from the chat settings. Right click on any chat tab and it'll open chat settings. There's a tab for channels with a text box up top and he can type the channel name in there to join an existing channel.

He's had this problem since he started. He's not spammed, and even if he did, he'd have been banned from chat for I think it's 3 days, not restricted to fewer characters.

Hmm well, in the short term he can try that workaround to get into your fleet channel.

Has he tried filing support tickets about this?

    -edit-
Oh uh, so is it a system message that says he can only type messages of 20 characters or did he manually count to determine the limit?

He counted. I can't be sure if there was an actual system message. I was responding to someone else in this thread who mentioned system message.

I'll try the workaround you mentioned, and thanks!

if he cant get that figured out the channel owner and admins can send him an invite to join the channel as well.

If he's not actually getting a warning message or anything when trying to send anything longer than 20 characters or any sort of error message at all.. well okay this is a weird idea but what if he makes the width of his chat box larger? It would be a weird set of circumstances but maybe the text entry box isn't scrolling properly when he types a sentence so he can't send anything longer than the width of the text box? (Yes I am grasping at straws here.. :P ) What if he pastes in text instead of typing it?
