-15.0% Defense? What? Why?

I finally made enough Dilithium and Fleet Credits to be able to afford my first Fleet Neutronium Alloy Console ... After eagerly slotting it, I returned to space, and sure enough, there was the damage resist 28% (with a second blue XI) but to my horror, I notice that my "Bonus Defense" was -15.0%

Is that from the console? Or is it from something else? I'm currently running the Solonae 3 Pce set minus the Warp Core only.

try punching your accelerator and then re-check the values. Do this right outside a planet, in the 'instance' between sector space and "dock here".

As a rule of thumb, only look at starship values when in motion in an area like the one described above --- the values get wonky if you are on the ground OR in sector space.

Specifically, I think you are seeing the "sitting still" penalty to defense.

Defense is modified by your movement speed. Were you stationary when you checked that, by any chance?

Ahh ... guys you are awesome ... I was sitting still, just outside my Fleets Starbase ...
I'm not logged in right now (and my ... ahem ... significant other, would kill me if I logged back in now)

I'll check it tomorrow, but that sounds like the problem ... I was worried I'd just blown my dosh, or I'd borked something up.

Thanks for the info and suggestions guys.

Also you might be confusing Defense and Resistance.

Normal armour consoles, like the Neutronium you bought, increase the resistance against a certain type of weapon and don't do anything to the defense value. If you scroll down a bit in the defense window of your ships character sheet, you'll see your resistance against every type of incoming damage listed.

As others have mentioned, Defense is largely modified by how fast your ship is currently going.

The difference between those two is:

Defense: The higher it is, the more difficult it will be for your enemies to hit you.

Resistance: The higher it is, the less damage you will take from shots that hit you.

Heh yeah, have to be moving to see that. It's the same with your turn rate as well. If you aren't moving, that won't show up properly either.

The elusive space trait (+10 defence) should bring that up to just -5

Romulan Boffs with subtufuge should bring you into the positive defence numbers while sitting still.

The Aegis set and some of the Dyson reputation consoles can also boost your defense value.

What STO calls "Defense" should more properly be termed "Evasion". Basically, your Defense rating is the probability that you will be able to dodge an enemy energy or projectile attack, and the defender's Defense rating is compared against the attacker's Accuracy rating--higher Accuracy of an attacker will reduce the effectiveness of the defender's Defense. Think of your Defense rating as being like a penalty being applied to the Accuracy of incoming attacks.

Resistance, on the other hand, is a measurement of how much incoming damage will be reduced by--the higher a defender's Resistance to the incoming damage type, the greater the reduction in damage. Shield Resistance and Hull Resistance are calculated separately--a shield that has a 20% Phaser resist for example will take less shield damage from Phasers, but give no resistance to the hull, while armor consoles will give resistance to the hull, but not to the shields.

Having recently got my Grind up to the level where I can afford Fleet Consoles ... all i can say is ... WOW!!!.

Neut. Consoles with Hull Reg and +Turn then RCS consoles with Hull HP ... WOW!!!

Nearly turned my Avenger into an Escort! 37% Res all + 58% Defense at X 4 Speed. And turns nearly as fast as a BoP! (maybe a 'slight' exaggeration :D )

Hmm sounds like u need more engine power ive 70-83 defence on all 5 chars when at x4 speed. When at 4x speed ur speed needs to be above 24 to max ur defence bounes from starship maneuvers. Hover mouse over the power speed bar.
