Memory Alpha seems to be a place where you can build cool advanced weaponry yet with no effort whatsoever I'm already a Low ranking Admiral (rank 44) and still only able to build level IV stuff at Memory Alpha so from what I can see I'll never be at a point where I'll be able to build anything there that I'll find useful -is it some kind of relic from before the episodes were introduced and it used to take forever to rank up?
It's part of STO's (currently not very useful) Crafting system, which, apparently, the Devs are looking into revamping.
You have to "learn" to make higher tier equipment by creating the lower tier stuff, plus you need ingredients ... These can be found randomly throughout the game (the 'particle trace/anomaly' minigame) but ultimately you need some very rare ingredients for the best gear, and realistically the only way to get them, is to buy them from one of the MA vendors.
So in the end, most players don't bother, because the rewards aren't (currently) worth the outlay.
That being said, you can use the Crafting system to make various items that may fetch a few EC's on the exchange, or through recycling/vendoring

Memory Alpha exists as a relic of the past. Before reputation systems, before the fleet system, before the dilithium store. We had the ability to craft valuable items for ourselves that would otherwise drop from the game on a completely random basis. It also served as a rather ineffectual sink for data samples.
The only useful part of Crafting was the revamp where they introduced the Aegis ship set which is still useful even today.
Overall, though. Crafting has been replaced by fleet equipment, reputation equipment, and so on and so forth.
Memory Alpha is there to remind us of the potential Crafting once had. Maybe someday they will revamp it (again).
As i recall, the only things ever worth crafting, were the Delta Flyer and the Aegis set. Even at top rank in crafting, i was only able to craft odd number items, which was useless since the Even number items were on the exchange for cheaper. More so since they added the dilithium cost to crafting.
Memory alpha (the website) mentions that they had storage for crafting materials, but even then, all i can recall was the regular bank.
Over all, Memory Alpha is a wasted location with a horrendous and frankly useless crafting system. They really should have moved the Lore daily there as it makes more sense, but much like GPL and many other outdated and useless things in this game, it is in serious need of revamping.
I think that they really need to actually add a library there, something that contains all of the in game lore and such. If anything, they could link it to the actual website like an ingame browser, that way you really could look up anything trek related. Sadly that would be too complicated for this engine, but you get the point.
Since it doesn't have a price tag in it, it really didn't matter to Cryptic, so it was left to rot as is.

^^^ This.
You know, I thought just occurred to me, if it WERE turned into a library, and if it's made user friendly, It would be a great place for newer members to research any in game questions they have.
You know, a place to store all the game tribal knowledge and lore at.
Maybe make a feature there where one could research builds sorta like STO acadamy, except in game, but also make some function available through the gateway.
I wonder if they could introduce craftable weapon/equipment mods, but that would likely be purposeless or insanely broken, depending on how one implemented it.

BUT, I believe a crafting revamp is coming (without any source to back that up). So I counsel any player to get their crafting skill up just in case.
In one of the more recent podcasts, Rivera said that they are considering a crafting reputation system (I don't recall his specific wording). He also said that your current crafting skill would NOT directly carry over in that event, although it would give you a bit of a head start. If you're not already maxed out, I would probably advise against power-leveling your crafting unless there's a way to do it without dilithium.
That said, I did use crafting the other day on my main to craft a couple of kits for a new alt, since I had all the materials just sitting around (kits don't require dilithium), but my main was maxed in crafting before the dilithium costs were added. I literally crafted the Delta Flyer the last day before that possibility was removed.
Of course, with the kit revamp coming soon (TM) that may also not really be a good incentive.
The universe has a wonderful sense of humor. The trick is learning how to take a joke.
I remember building the delta flyer from bits, making awesome weapons..... long time ago!
This, I was about 2/3s on filling the Delta Flyer project when they announced they were going to remove it, big race to get it done in time. Finished my Aegis set shortly after too.
Sad that crafting is pretty much a dead-end now, only worthwhile to build turrets
There is one thing on Memory Alpha that is unique, the Ferengi Commodities Vendor sells Antigens, Astrometric Probes, and Weather Control Systems for the cheapest prices in the game. Very handy when you get into the Reputation system, and you have to buy massive amounts of commodities to fill projects.
Vulcan, Andoria, Starbase 39, ESD, DS9, also have a Commodities Vendor with the cheapest price on a certain type.

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!
As some people here have replied, there is crafting in this game. You need materials, that you can gather and you need to be at a crafting station. For the Fed side this memory Alpha, for KDF, Q'onos, First City.
This system is pretty common in roleplaying games. Each side has only one crafting station in the whole universe. Pretty stupid as you think about the concept. I hope they revamp that.
Crafting is not that bad. Before admiral rank you can make pretty good stuff that rofl stomp you through the game. Even at admiral lower half blue and purple captain equipment is fine. It also sells well on the exchange.
For a Fed character it is easy to level, considering you pick up all the anomalies whille you level up.
The big breakdown is admiral level. For levels 40 to 50 you need besides the gathered ingredients the replaticle and unreplaticale ingredients. You can buy them from a vendor with ... dilithium and it is not cheap. To spend a lot of dilithium for equipment that is sub par and only is there to be replaced soon with better stuff. I think that answers everything.
Dilithium can be grinded, but with dilithium I can also buy direct equipment, so what is the point of this system. To grind to have a slightly adavantage for the main grind, getting reputation and or fleet stuff?
There is no point to craft anything when you are level 50. Thats the problem with the crafting system. Any minimum quality stuff you will get in any loot will be same or better than any item you can craft.
The crafting system i only see it useful when you need specific items that u cant gather anywhere, as old items or low level ones that you will not probably gather anymore since you are already level 50 (except for the nimbus zone and other ones that will level down you automatically to level 26 or something).

I remember too.
Now we have fleet Starbases, mines and spires to do everything Memory Alpha USED to do.
We've managed to strap a dilithium cost to Memory Alpha crafting, but otherwise left it to dry up and die.
I say make it a memorial to what once was in STO, Because I really can't see them doing anything with crafting that won't compete with fleet holdings.
Unless they think out side of the box and put a little effort into it. I believe Cryptic is capable of the first, but the last..............

But yes, it's a shame you can't craft cool stuff for admirals.
They should give you the ability to craft certain unique pieces of gear.
