I don't know if this has been talked about, considered, or rejected, but whether or not you love or hate ground combat-- I love it. I like setting up my team like it's time for some heavy business when I'm going into a room I know that has a group of enemies and getting tactical, and so on.
It may not seem like such an important thing, and I'll probably draw eyerolls or groans, but ... I also specifically love going in hand to hand, rather than using a lirpa or a bat'leth. Even now, it also never ceases to make me laugh when I have a Klingon back off from melee like he's going "KAHLESS HELP ME IT WENT INSANE." D8
The one problem is when I start charging through the line and, unconsciously, tap the looting key and suddenly I have a phaser in my hands. It usually ends up throwing off my flow, even if I'm slinging around the CQC kit on my tactical characters.
Has any thought been given to offering the ability to "lock in" fisticuffs, or is that something that ultimately boils down to "stop tapping loot or just deal with it and/or unequip a slot after every encounter?"
The feature would be appreciated but honestly I haven't bothered with ground loot in more than a year. It's worthless; won't sell on the exchange for much or vendor for much.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.

I wouldn't say "worthless," I'm making up to 480,000 EC on some higher-end armors per piece, and even some of the mid-road Commander-to-Captain equipment when it drops purple. And ~32,000 (give or take) on XIs at a vendor isn't bad when you're in a pinch.
