I wanted to put this in the introduction thread, but I could not find one, so I just made a new thread. If this is in the wrong place, I would like to apologize.

Hello, I am Artemis. There isn't really much to say, I've been watching Star Trek since I was about four and decided to join up here a few weeks ago.

It is actually the first MMO I have played and so far I am very, very, very bad at it, but I'll learn.

Does anyone have any advice on learning how to steer the ship? I don't know if it is just my computer, but for me it is like trying to steer through molasses. I was killed an embarrassing number of times during the tutorial simply because I couldn't steer properly.

Holding down both mouse buttons will steer the ship if the engines are on (pressing R will turn them on).

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Hey, I'm worffan101. I'm a huge Worf fan, but I really like Data, Picard, and Jadzia Dax too. I prefer TNG and DS9, and the best movies are Wrath of Khan and First Contact.

Rules of thumb for steering the ship: WASD is how you steer in space; arrow keys redistribute shields. If you have the engines going just a little (hit E once) your maneuverability is greatly increased. If you wand a good turn rate, use an escort or science vessel. Cruisers are slow and kind of clunky (but they get lots of hit points to counter for that).

    Hope that helps!

Hey, welcome to STO and mmo's in general:)

As far as steering, I kind of learned that if you drop your max speed down to 2 bars you can turn much faster. I think that drops your defense a bit but you can always put the hammer down again as soon as you make your turn.

Also, keep an eye out for engineering consoles that give increased flight turning. I do believe there are one or two space skills that you can increase your rate of turning with as well.

Again, welcome to the game and have fun. And don't take the forums too seriously in regards to anything negative. Remember, the negative voice is always the loudest.

Have fun brother and keep it light:)

    @saihung423: Actually, that's sister, hon!

I've been on Tumblr for a while so believe me, I know about the negative voice being the loudest.

Thank you all for the advice on steering. I think my main problem is that no matter what speed I happen to be going the game will suddenly lag, I seemingly won't go anywhere, and then it speeds up and I cannot control it. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes. The server lag is one of the more annoying parts of the game. I play to GMT so I avoid peak time, but during events it can get laggey.

    Artemis, welcome to the game!

I'll let the others handle the technical details. They likely could do it better anyway.

I'd just like to address the "first MMO" and "killed an embarrassing number of times" bits of your introduction. The first MMO I ever tried, it was very tricky, until I realized dying was not really a penalty, but a learning point. As soon as I dropped the live-at-all-costs attitude, and used the experience to learn, I relaxed and really started to both learn and enjoy the game. I can't tell you how many times I've died in this one, but I'm a lot better at driving now, and can even parallel park (if that Scimitar would get his nose back over the line).

Enjoy! Oh, and please pepper the Academy forum with questions. Good people hover there to answer.

I've had that myself, which sounds like server lag.

Sometimes if I log out and log back in it seems to get right but that is probably just me thinking that.

Now if I have it where it is skipping sort of, flying along it stops, then skips forward, then pauses, then skips...I've found that is on my end and I need to restart and usually will just do some basic cleaning on the 'puter.

And my bad, Artemis, how did I miss that clue with the name lol.

@Steamwright: I know, I need to remember that. It's just that it gets so frustrating not being able to get past a certain stage.

@Saihung423: No worries, in fact you are one of the few people to know that Artemis was indeed first a female name.

    Everyone here seems very friendly!

    One more question:

I am a little confused as to how everything works. Do I need to go on a mission right away? Or can I fly off to other planets just to explore for a little while?

Right, I forgot to mention that I think some of my trouble with steering may come from the fact that I have Tourette syndrome and one of my tics is violent twitching. I don't think that there is a way around that one, though.

Once you have completed the tutorial you should be able to explore the Sirius Block.

I literally have EXACTLY the same problem. I can't tell you how many times I've nearly died in elite Borg STFs due to finger tics.

I've found that stress and allergies tend to make TS slightly worse; I've always had the least issues while loaded up on food, water, and Zyrtec.

Well, what do you know? I didn't expect to meet someone else with TS.

Are the tics just in your fingers, or do they come from a different source? My twitches start in my back and shoulders, but of course that makes everything else move, hence the difficulty.

My tics are odd in that tend to come in waves. They will be nearly imperceptible for a while and then suddenly they all come at once.

Out of curiosity, is there a lot of chatting in game? Have I just been going to quiet places, or is it just on the forums?

Fingers, back, shoulders, legs. Neck and face, too, sometimes.

I have the same thing. When they surge, they REALLY surge. As in, painful full-body spasm. Fortunately, those are rarer now, but they were frequent for me a couple of years back.

Chatting in-game? Some zones are OK, but you want to stay off ESD no matter what. Stick to Qo'noS; the conversation's less busy but less brain-numbing. If you have a good fleet, there's usually a bit of chatting going on.

Tell me about it, I've put my entire back into spasm more times than I can count.

    ESD? Why is that?

I think I'll hold off on joining a fleet for a while, at least until i have a better handle on the game mechanics.

Arms trying to pull themselves out of their sockets (they pull themselves behind my back by the shoulders). I dislocated both shoulders once when I fell backwards.

    Pain city.

ESD is where trolls, idiots, spammers with exorbitant offers for useless gear, people telling the spammers to go shove it somewhere, masochists who should know better than to try to educate the trolls, understaffed fleets, and Gorn jokers sit and yell at each other all day long.

I know that there are quite a few fleets who welcome newbies and casual gamers. Just ask around, make it clear that you're new, and use the social tab to search the fleet listings. Joining a fleet has many, many benefits; fleet ships, fleet gear, dilithium mining missions, special queued events, and more.

    Very much worth it.

Well, ESD isn't always that bad...

Especially when you're there for GMT prime time and not US prime time.

    Um...

ESD is always bad. Academy is usually OK, though.

Even during GMT primetime it's a mess. Oh, god, those freaking UKIP guys that I saw once...
