Okay,
Neverwinter's had a monopoly on a Gateway game for long enough. STO needs one, too.
The problem has been that dungeon crawls translate quite well to something like Sword Coast Adventures. STO not so much.
But then inspiration struck.
Anybody remember the
old text-based Star Trek game?
I've seen a lot of variants of that one over the years. I'm not suggesting that Cryptic simply port that over, but some borrowed elements and nostalgia could make a fine and very addictive little web-based game.
At its' heart, the text-based game was both combat and exploration dealing with hunting down hostile ships. The basic idea of searching a grid for encounters and dealing with what you find there is what I'm getting at.
A grid-based Gateway game could/would have some twists that the old game didn't:
POV:
The flavor of the game would change slightly depending on whether you're playing as Fed or KDF (allied).
Different Ships:
What if the ships in the full game were represented in this web-game somehow, with differing stats, and you could pick which of your ships you wanted to fly?
Bridge Officers:
And what if you could pick one or more of your bridge officers to provide a special ability to use in the web game?
Guest Stars:
And what if you encountered ships from actual players in the game? (Like pulling random names out of the database and generating encounters based on them) So it's not all about shooting no-names.
More Enemy Factions:
Borg, Tal Shiar, etc.

I won't argue that.
Release cycles being what they are, I figure we need to be asking for things well in advance.
