BOFF training - a point that's always puzzled me

I see forum chatter from time to time about getting your character to train BOFFs or getting another player to train your BOFFs. I've missed the point somehow. Why is this important? I've been able to get everything I need in BOFF training from the attendants placed in ESD and Quo'nos. The EC needed is a pittance, even for low level characters. Do player characters somehow provide a benefit that the base NPCs do not?

Because certain powers have level III versions, which of course is an upgrade of the level II versions BoFF trainers offer.

And whilst some level III versions appear randomly on rare (blue) and very rare (purple) BoFF's already, there are some BoFF powers that can only be trained by an appropriately skilled and classed Captain.

A certain class captain (Sci, Eng, or Tac) needs to first 'learn' to train a BoFF power, by putting points into certain skills, this 'unlocks' the ability to train level III versions, but in you are a Tac captain, you may need a Eng captain to train your Engi BoFF's in level III skills because you cant ...

    That's why.

I'm curious then: how do you get rapid fire III on an engs tac Bo?
Or gravity well III on a tacs sci?
Or turret III on a scis eng?

Best thing I can suggest is have a read through this page:
    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Bridge_officer_abilities

As I said some skills can be taught by a certain class of captain ... If it's a Tac skill and you are an Eng, then you need to find a Tac captain that you really (really!) trust and get together somewhere and "Trade" the BoFF to them (make sure to unequip them of everything first) then they can "train' them in the skill you want and then (as long as you picked the right player) trade them back to you ...

Some skills however are only available on Purple (very rare) BoFF's and even then, only very rarely.

Just to add ... For skills not available via the "captain trade" method ... You can browse the exchange for Purple BoFF's with the skill you want, then after you purchase them they will either pop up straight away, or appear in your "candidate" roster (right hand side of the "Stations" tab on the character screen)

When/if they pop up on screen, you can use the "Train Up" option instead of 'Join", to train one of your current BoFF's in any skill, although this will "use up" the new BoFF, so it can be expensive unless you have EC to burn.

I know how to do that, I just want to know how the op does it with the abilitys only captains can train. No Bo (other then toven khev) comes with rapid 3.

You just have to find someone you trust to train your boff. I just ask in my fleet's chat and someone usually has the ability. It's the easiest way.

AGAIN: I know. But the OPs statement is that this is obsolete. And asked HIM how HE would get those abilities WITHOUT TRADING.

He doesn't use the word "obsolete" nor does he infer it ... Merely that he doesn't understand the need for 'BoFF Trading.

It sounds to me like he is not aware of the existence of Level III skills variants or what their importance/ benefit is.

It's okay, revandarklighter. I knew what you meant. :)

    Well, actually, he said:

Which does imply he thinks the boff trainer NPCs offer all skills for training, and that therefore trading and training is, not "obsolete," but redundant.
You're right. The work here is very important.

Yes, but at the same time, he admits that he doesn't know what this is about and wishes to know why. And the why is that it isn't redundant and his initial impression is inaccurate.
