Getting information on fellow players is less than stellar IMO. When you view someone you don't get a lot of information that could be useful to others.
What I would like to see is a bit more in depth of the details of who you are looking at.
Captain,
Ship,
Shuttle
What do others think?

Well holy TRIBBLE just yesterday I saw a ship I didnt recognize and silly me of course I clicked on him clicked info and got this.
Name Char
info oh wait there is none lol
This is the absolute worst info screen that has ever been created it may as well not exist and the ONLY reason it does is for RP and that is IF they have a bio filled out.
^worst implementation in a MMO ever created
Dont get me wrong I love this game and I am not really trying to lash out or yell at cryptic or PWE
But, Credit where its due and honesty when its not
Honestly this is worse than not having an info button seriously
It's a game and your character is not entitled to any degree of "privacy". This should absolutely be a feature - players should be able to use the scan button to analyse nearby ships and players - presumably for a temporary decrease in total power.
I should also be entitled to your full account and CC info... After all... It's just digital money, right?
I actually like Delta Rising.
And here I thought you were one of the wise STO people on the Forums...life is full of dissapointments.
Personally (and I think the OP as well) I don't click "info" to find out what " uber coolz gearz" someone is running.
It's just that, as the OP suggests, sometimes you seen an unfamiliar ship, and lets face it, the "promo" images and STOWiki pics for many ships are just pathetic (try seeing what most KDF ships look like for instance via the Wiki) or sometimes people are able to get some really cool looking combinations.
So if nothing else the 'Ship Type" info would be nice ...
If there is a ship I've never seen before, I go to a ship yard or the Z store or the DevBlogs to locate it.
I've been here for four years and have never heard of or seen any messages as you suggest. I don't see why you feel the need for secrecy as to what gear you use.
everything in this game is doable in whites and are even simplistic enough for organized groups in lesser tiered gear so why do you feel you need to hide?
It seems to me that people who fear others knowing what you use and allowing them to match shows a lack of skill as you know you will lose your edge and not be able to compete with others. The only other reason I see that you need to hide is that you cheat and allowing others to view you will show that your a cheat.
There is no reason to hide what should be obvious.

I am happy I could clear that up for you...
I never heard the words "you" and "wise" used about me in the same sentence though...
There used to be a picture here, but they changed signatures and I can't be bothered to replace it.
As long as it is only just the type of ship and Captain then I'd be cool with it, If its like everything on the ship (IE Gateway stuff) then no I dont want others seeing that, that is private to me but if someone asks nicely I'll tell em what I have
Why is this private to you? It is not your underoos you are showing off here.
This way of thinking makes absolutly no sense to me in the least why do you feel like your gear is a private matter?
Please everyone who feels this way explain it to me cause it makes no sense to me as to why this would be. I need to see some kind of solid reason as to why this should be a private matter.
Hey, I earned all these virtual medals, I'd like to be able to wear 'em in public.
(It could even be a useful feature - my main toon has completed all the "Path to 2409" stuff, so if people could read her accolades, they wouldn't need to visit a wiki to get the answers to the daily quiz question - she could just stand around in the Academy and they could crib the answers off her.
This is one of the worst ideas I've seen on here.
Stuff like that just brings out the elitist players even more than normal, then we go from a nice casual game to people looking up that you have squeezed out as much DPS from your accolades as possible.
Last thing STO needs is at the start of an STF some loud mouth going on how they are the only one with maxed out accolades for the task at hand, and those people are in STO, I snapped at one in the open PvP system today about them constantly trying to belittle others in chat.
So, that idea is a big no from me. Don't add fuel to the fire.
I would be okay with Feds not being able to inspect Klingons and vice-versa (with Romulans falling into whichever allied faction), but Fed to Fed? No reason.
And if someone decides to take it upon themselves to sit around ESD inspecting people and telling them how much their gear sucks, then that is what the ignore list is for.
I would like to see this even extended to show the paper doll of the character being inspected and letting you mouse over their uniform and a pop-up telling you what piece that is.
Dunno if they changed it recently or not.
Edit for clarity: By above your head, I mean the targeting UI like you're going to click a ship heal to heal them or you were targeting for attack. That UI icon.
It's simple really, it's my character on my account, I paid for the LTS, bought the Zen, opened the lockboxes to get the Lobi and, to be frank, it's got nothing to do with anyone else what I have done with it.
Would you go round to a stranger's house and start peering in the windows to see what TV they had?
As tekehd said, if you really want to know what my ship is or what equipment I'm using, talk to me and ask me, don't just lurk in the corner quietly trying to spy.
No, but if you drive your car out somewhere, they can see it.
And recognize it or not, if you park it somewhere, they can walk up to it and give it a closer look. If you don't have tinted windows (and maybe if you do), then people can absolutely look inside.
Oh, poor you who must feel so violated that people have looked at what ship you are flying or possibly what gear you have slotted.
But Cryptic has a vested interest in letting people know what ship you are using, what uniform you are wearing, and what gear you have equipped.
If people see me flying a C-Store ship that they like, they may be encouraged to buy that same ship. If they see me wearing a uniform piece that they like, I can be used as an advertisement for them to sell that uniform to someone else.
Most games that I have played allowed for inspections. No reason that this one shouldn't.
Not hiding at all. Just never saw the sense in bragging publicly. And like I said, if you really want to know, shoot me a message ingame. Be happy to tell you.
Oh. Waitaminnit. Now I get it. You want everything handed to you on a silver platter. Sending me a message would require effort. Which offends your overdeveloped sense of entitlement and would make you have to press more than one button.
The very nerve of me suggesting you actually do something.
+1 on that arguement, perhaps if someone scans you they get a noise like mario dying to show they failed the scan lol
and as for Why I want MY gear and builds to be private, Well I believe several others have answered that quite succinctly.
Should be like that other game in space where Electronic Counter Measures rock lol
Sorry but you example fails. Yes they can see what car I drive and maybe they can see what the interior looks like. What they can't do is lift the bonnet (or hood if you prefer) and see what engine and possible modifications I have. Nor can they lift the boot (or trunk if you prefer) and see what items I have in there.
So whilst they can see what car I drive, just like they can see what ship I'm flying, they can't see what the inner workings and equipment are.
Oh poor you, having to result in petty mockery to try and validate your point.
Once again your example fails. No-one is disputing that people can see what ship I fly, or what uniform my character is wearing, those are out there for everyone to see. However as Cryptic doesn't directly sell ship weapons and consoles on the C-Store, what would be the point of allowing people to inspect my character as a form of advertisement?
Once again, your point fails. Many games allow me to play as a Elf and run around killing Orcs with swords and arrows. Does that mean STO should allow that too?
Sign me up for Elf swords online then! lol Would be hilarious seeing KDF and Feds using bows and arrows or even giant 2 handed swords on the borg xD
