Red Matter Capacitor

init0init0 Member Posts: 14 Arc User
Hi all

I've been playing STO a bit again and every time I come back to the game I realize that I'm missing the Red Matter Capacitor because I didn't buy the collectors edition back when it was still readily available. It's really putting me off because I'm a min/maxer at heart and simply can't stand not having access to this module.

Currently the collectors edition is only available from Amazon for insane prices (like $80 or more) which I'm simply not willing to pay for the RMC (since all the other items are worthless to me).

So is there any way to get my hands on the RMC at this point in time?

I'd be willing to pay $10-20 for this item in a heartbeat but for some strange reason PW/Cryptic doesn't seem to want my money?

How about offering an account upgrade from regular edition to collectors edition for $20-30?

Anything? Anyone?

If there really is no way to get this item (without buying a physical collectors edition for a sick price) then is there at least some kind of alternative available in-game (or on the C-store) that comes close to the RMC?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

If you really want the RMC, then buy the Collectors Edition. There must be cheaper copies somewhere...

They could make a console version of it and stick it in a new C-Store ship for 2,500 zen... Heh.

That wouldn't be particularly fair to those who spent the extra money to get the collector's edition. I don't like the gouging now that it's out of print, but one has to consider the extra cost people paid for it versus the regular edition.

The entire point behind calling something collectible is that it is collectible -- not something that people will be able to get later in some other way.

There is a reason why a Black Lotus is worth a lot of money -- because it wasn't reprinted in later editions (just appearing in the first three).

Many of the worthless battery type cstore consoles that's basically half a red matter capacitor should be changed to fit in battery slot. That's what they are, reusable batteries, just like red matter capacitors.

I looked around and all I could find were either scams (supposedly selling collectors edition cd-keys etc.) or the boxed version on Amazon which is $80.

On all other game sites the article may be listed but is "unavailable" or "not in stock" etc.

I found a single site in Germany that's selling the "gold edition" but even that is 39?... and I'm not really sure if the "gold edition" is the same thing as the collectors edition. Anyone know?

Or anyone know of any online store that is still selling the collectors edition for a less insane price?

It's so frustrating because it would be really easy for Cryptic to simply sell account upgrades (or at least sell the full collectors edition as digital download on their site or something).

Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated!

    Edit:

I can understand that and have no issue with things being exclusive or limited. However, the only thing I give a damn about is the RMC... and it's not like that is an actual item that anyone is going to collect (since it's only a virtual object and you can hardly display it in your collection of other star trek items etc.).

Also, I'd be gladly willing to pay a fair amount of cash for the RMC - but even I am not quite crazy enough to pay $80 just for that...

It wouldn't be collectible if it were reprinted. The entire point is that it was a one-off, a limited number of copies. That's what makes things collectible.

I got the "red matter capacitor" when I bought the gold edition.
But that was about a year ago, so maybe it doesn't work anymore.
I got it on sale so the cost was about the same as a game time card, which I was using at the time for subscribtion.

That's fine by me since I don't actually want the collectors edition. All I want is the RMC so I'm not at a disadvantage in-game...

Imagine if WOW had sold a collectors edition at release which gave you access to an end-game item that is better then anything you can get in-game... it's simply idiotic and basically puts me off the game (which means that Cryptic is losing money because I'm hardly going to go and spend a lot of money on a game that I can never be "best" at because of some moronic exclusive item).

You don't need the collector edition for the RMC. The "gold" edition is enough.
If you are European, it's as low as 9? in France (unfortunately, they don't seems to send it elsewhere in Europe). In UK it's ?35, which is a lot more expensive. You might want to check on the spanish and german amazon. Or check on google/ebay (make sure it's not a used game in this case).

You dont need a RMC for min/maxing. Batteries are generally better unless you cant have 3 of your power levels at max but in this case you are not a min/maxer :D (fawmitard build)

RMC isn't necessary for a min/maxer. If you're running EPT, A2Bat, or plasmonic, or any combination thereof, you're doing better than the RMC can help you with.

It's nice as a device because -- let's face it -- devices as a whole rather suck for starships. However, being "best of the worst" doesn't really mean it's all that great. IMO Subspace Field Modulator is far more important than RMC.

RMC for what it does is probably the only device that gets slotted in every ship. Yes all those skills do it better but you are wasting skills and skill tree points to take advantage of those skills. RMC only benefits from battery skill. In my escorts I use as an emergency Aux 2 Battery power. With some of the AMP passives I can get the 4 system damage bonus. The only thing in the game that can come close that is just as cheap is the warp core doff that can add bonus power to you system on the use of Emergency Powers. SFM is -400 resistance to Proton weapons if you PvP it will actually get you killed.

How is $80 insane? Do you happen to have any clue how much it cost at retail in 2010?

Lol, that's weird. Four years ago the collectors edition was practically being given away on Amazon. I think I got mine for $8.

That was when the game was sub only. It was also a 30 day time card. If a person is already a lts then there is significantly less value. The other perks in the collectors edition are not really worth it these days unless it has a pre-order bonus (Amazon pre-order comes to mind). The packaging is not important and while the art book and badge is interesting it is not worth $80.

The only lasting part of this collector's edition is the rmc.

The reason why red matter is good is on non aux2bat builds it is easier to get the amp bonus. on Aux2bat build it can still give aux power if your Aux battery is on cooldown and give extra power to your overcap at the same time.

One thing I do know is that once you get the rmc you never go back and it then goes on all your builds.

Yeah, I bought mine like a few months before the game went f2p for $10 I think.

All of that is irrelevant. The Collector's Edition is no longer in production. Supply and demand determines what the price is going to be. Cryptic is not setting the price for those old CEs. Meanwhile, PWE hates the red matter capacitor, so why would they want to give away more of them?

I don't believe they're allowed to rerelease it because it's from the first JJTrek film. Being a rare collector's only item was the only way to actually have it in the game.
