Once you have a sufficiently upgraded mine you can talk to the Shift Manager to pick up a mission (There is the quest giver icon on the map)
There are a possible number of missions, at most 3 that you can pick up. Once you have the missions, go through the shield thing (with an EV suit activated) and start mining.
Ah my EV suit must not have been activated. I'd activated it at some point, but maybe on the previous map.
Argh, thanks!
(It would have been nice if STO gave some form of error message...any message....)
I had that problem my first time there. In fact, sometimes I activate mine 3-4 times before it will take. You're right, there should be something that will tell you it is not activated, like a light or something. Maybe on the back of the helmet.

... What is the obsession with needing STO to deliver error messages every time someone is about to do something they ought not to do?
"Error: You're about to walk into the vacuum of space with nothing but the shirt on your back, dumas!"
or
"Error: You still have an EC cap at 10mil and you are about to sell 20 keys you just spent real money on for 1.7mil each and you're gonna get pissed when you find out you don't get any of it!"
lols... Nothing against the OP, but it makes me laugh each time I read posts like this.
If you have activated the EV and it still doesn't let you out, then let us know so we can troubleshoot with you while you wait 4 years to hear back from Cryptic as to why you have a bug somewhere...

A warning is a good thing. In the Dil Mine, not being able to access the airlock is a good indication that something is wrong. It is like a warning, though not too informative for ones that have not done mining for a while, or are new.
However, if you are in a place like the fleet Dil Mine, there is no warning that tells you that even though you have activated it, the game didn't register it. I have died multiple time because of this bug. If there was some little light that would light up on the suit, that would help.
About the EC limit, I didn't have this problem selling things. However, I can see how it can either be missed, or be something that is forgotten. I had a friend point it out to me, before I tried to sell something. But, a message that pops up to let you know is helpful, though not mandatory.
When I first started playing STO, it was my first MMO. I have played a lot of console games before, but none of them have nearly as much to keep up with as an MMO. I found out that real quick. So, it is understandable that something like this will happen to people. We do make mistakes.
If they exchange can hold items that we have come back in our mail, then if someone reaches their limit, why not let it hold their EC for a short time?
Not giving a message on something like that is like being in a mission, or the farming foundry missions, and reaching your inventory cap, and the game not telling you. You keep claiming items, and they just disappear. Instead, the game gives a warning, and even puts it into an overflow bag (when it is working right).
Again, these are not mandatory, but would be very helpful in any game that has so much to keep up with.
"Error: You're about to walk into the vacuum of space with nothing but the shirt on your back, dumas!" If the game glitches, this is not the person's fault. So, an indicator light, or message would help in those cases.

There IS a light, and it turns on when your suit is active. It's on the front of your character, on his/her helmet.
Or, what if the error message came in the form of an NPC who normally stands on the side and does nothing, like the security officers, but then comes up to you and round-house kicks you in the face and says, "you forgot your EV suit!"

I'm not obsessed at all with error messages, if it had let me go out the airlock then started making me gag I would either turn on my suit or go poof. Either way I would have known what the problem was.
If you were in a mining airlock in real life wouldn't you either expect some computerized warning system to alert you if you were to use an airlock without activated EV gear? Or if not, you would have heard all the scuttlebutt about that airlock over there on the Mining Asteroid and how ole Herb from the loading dock went out last week without his suit and became crystallized humanoid in 30 seconds...
There would probably be folk legends about haunted canyons...
Thank you. I never looked at the front of my EV suit. I usually put it on, activate it, and go. I will start checking that from now on.

"... started making me gag I would either turn on my suit or go poof."
Sorry, that had me in a childish fit of laughter/stitches!
On a more serious note though, it's always seemed counterintuitive to me that the EV suit is not a device slot item: Surely you would wear your normal uniform/armour underneath it? I realise that it's more for balance than anything else but still? (Everyone running around in EV+Armour = lulz)

I haven't tried mining with the new suits so if it still won't let you out then they may be bugged.
