Long ago there was an anniversary event that introduced the Oddy. It seemed to me the purpose was to create interest in a new ship that would be released in the Z store. It gave people a chance to fly it and easily earn a watered down version for free in the hopes they would purchase the fully powered version. The same goes for the Bortas... I think that was a reasonable strategy.
This time around however is different. I played with the Dyson Rom sci ship and loved it. I like the style, how it handles, and found its new abilities full of potential. I don't like the grind, but I would be willing to live with it.
But here is the problem... I purchase ships, items, services from the Z store with the expectation that they will be available for future alts. It is my understanding that while the Dyson ships from the Z store will be claimable by future alts I may create, they won't have access to 4th set ability. That piece will only be available to alts who have claimed the free anniversary event grind ship. I don't consider that an acceptable deal.
If I am going to invest money in purchasing a ship, I don't want to worry about future alts not having a console available to them until next year. Cryptic should be making it an easy decision to invest in their ships. I should have peace of mind that I bought your ship pack and am covered for all eventualities. But from what I have observed in the forums, this current situation is just creating anxiety and frustration even for those who might be planning on spending money on this game. I would feel much better about the situation if I knew the missing piece of the set would be available later in some form and that I wouldn't have to wait another year to get it on future alts.
This does not seem like a good strategy in motivating people to buy your ship pack when it is released.
I agree. I also think that it is poor taste to try to get your player base to log in and play by forcing them to repeat the same anniversary content over and over. I have a lot of characters and I usually do any such grind for all of them, but I just really...REALLY don't feel like spending time on this instead of doing my usual mix of STF's, battlezone runs, and PvP. In other words, I play the game all the time already and feel frustrated that if I want to continue my tradition of getting all characters access to the new "shiny," I have to spend all of my time grinding this instead of grinding something more useful to my fleet and I.

Then you should make your max possible number of alts now, and then let them sit until you decided to use the, and do the grind on all of them. Whats the max, 50, 100? Should be a piece of cake.....

I am not sure they are using the event as a means to force people to play, rather than to add a little diversity into game play. If you are only doing it with one charactor, it's not that big of a deal and adds a little diversion. The problem, however, is that either:
1) They did not think to balance it around people doing it with more than 1-2 charactors,
or
2) They purposely want to discourage you from doing the event too easily on lots of charactors.
Personally I am of the opinion that they should have given you the ship as a reward for the fetured episode, which could have been the bonus reward added back during the reruns and for the event they could have had a lot of other small prizes like during the Winter and summer events to get some costume pieces and random/misc toys.

Took me about 3.5 hours last night to get my 19 characters through the daily Q mission, plus three runs of the FE (only two "count" towards the ship, I did it twice on one character). That is a lot of time investment. I too think the ship should be a freebie on first completion of the FE.
It should have been free after the playthrough like the Oddy and Ambassador. This is indeed a new kind of outrageous step of arrogance by Cryptic this year. Instead of celebrating they are simply letting you work...that is a hell of a party mood and "Thank you" they created this year.
The free ship might go into the fleet store...at least I hope the fleet store ship will have the secondary deflector pre-equipped...

Yes, three consoles plus the secondary deflector that happens to be on the "free" version of the ship.
