Last night I ran into a problem training a boff. I was a sci with a tac boff which needed a certain skill. I was going to train a tac player's sci boff in another. We each had a free slot.
I went to bridge, invited the other player, and we initiated a trade. I cleared my boff of gear and traded it and he put up his boff. We both accepted.
That's where it all hit the fan. I'm looking down my list for his boff's name, and he says it didn't work.
I don't have his boff but MINE is gone! What's more, it looks like one of my other boffs was duplicated. I'm closing and reopening my screen. On his screen my boff is just gone but he has no duplicate like I do.
Just as I suggest we exit the instance and try again, he tells me MY boff suddenly appeared on his list. I look at the 2 on my list and they're identical down to gear. I'm hesitating to delte one because I'm afraid it may be a glitch where his boff has a different image. I remove gear from this other boff, and suddenly it's gone from the duplicate also!
I'm out of options. I don't want to delete this boff -- I had just set him up and everything. One thing leads to another and I delete the one I think is a copy, because the tac player said it was a cheap boff and not to worry. When I do, BOTH copies go bye bye! I lost the boff I didn't want to lose!
So there I am down a boff, and still the other player's is totally missing. We try again. He gives me another sci boff to train. As soon as we finish that, I get BOTH of his boffs showing in my list. I train it, we trade and I give him back both while he returns my original.
I'm still out the one that was deleted, though.
Massively annoying UI issue, since apparently the boff was with me the whole time but not showing properly.
We need a better way to train. We should be able to walk up to a player and "initiate train" instead of "initiate trade" -- then you get the training screen but it shows HIS boff names instead of yours. If you leave his proximity the screen goes away. Maybe for safety's sake have you choose the boff, the skill, and hit train -- then it waits for him to accept a popup yes/no "do you want to train xxxx in yyyy?" prompt.
no trading needed. Just train directly. That way people can train rare untradable boffs like the JH, Breen, etc, without trading because they cannot be swapped.
That sounds like a very strange bug, and one I've not encountered in a lot of boff trainings. I hope you reported it with a real bug ticket.
A dev in some podcast did say they hoped to improve the boff training process. I believe one method being discussed was to have you train a "token" that could then be traded to another player who would use it to train their boff, so the boffs themselves wouldn't have to be traded.
That sounds great, so I hope something like that is implemented soon.
