If we could make PvP maps in the Foundry...

The discussion has popped up in other sections of the forum (not for the first time) of allowing the creation of PvP maps in the Foundry. We actually caught BranFlakes' attention, but obviously he couldn't say anything beyond "this would be cool someday" and I imagine he'll pass on the feedback.

But in the interest of keep the discussion alive and reaching out from the Foundry author community to the PvP player community, I wanted to ask a couple questions, with an eye toward discussing this issue on a future episode of the Foundry Roundtable podcast.

Questions:

Would you like to play custom PvP maps and if this was implemented, would you try making them?
Would you like to see multiple game modes on custom maps, or just deathmatch?
What makes a PvP map good?
What things do you like to see in a PvP map?
What is your favorite PvP map from STO and why?
What are your favorite PvP maps from other games and why?

Would you like to play custom PvP maps and if this was implemented, would you try making them? Absolutely yes! Perhaps even with some backstories.
Would you like to see multiple game modes on custom maps, or just deathmatch? YES!!!
What makes a PvP map good? Cover, Approach, Setting, Obstacles (vs. Line of Sight).
What things do you like to see in a PvP map? Badlands!!! Nebulas.
What is your favorite PvP map from STO and why? C & H - various forms of play on a map and battles are bit longer, more spread out and enjoyable as a pug. Arena is great for solid team experience.
What are your favorite PvP maps from other games and why? I only play STO! There are others!?

    Of course.
Would you like to see multiple game modes on custom maps, or just deathmatch?
    I'd prefer deathmatch/team deathmatch.

What makes a PvP map good?
A map which hopefully doesn't ruin frames per second for players.

What things do you like to see in a PvP map?
    - A blank space map. Just stars and darkness.
    - A nebula map which screws up everyones sensors, basically mutara nebula.
    - A giant asteroid belt. Would be cool if those asteroids could also explode to tiny pieces like crystalline shards if a player should happen to crash into one.
What is your favorite PvP map from STO and why?
I don't really have a favourite map. I'm already satisfied if a PvP queue starts after less than twenty minutes.
What are your favorite PvP maps from other games and why?
The other games I play are not comparable to STO.

    Definitely.

Sure, though I doubt anything more complex than team deathmatch would be feasible through the foundry.

In an arena map, I'd say mechanisms to stop the teams from spiraling too far up. That, and good scenery, good frame-rate, and interesting terrain that can be used strategically.

Tie between cracked planetoid and briar patch. There's nothing really special about either of them, but Solar Wind, Cap and Snooze, and Kerrat are all God awful. I don't remember the name, but that game mode from beta that was removed for some reason actually seemed to have good potential.

There was this map in Descent 3 called... I think it was called worlds apart or something like that. Asymmetric but amazingly balanced, and had this great feel to each base.

    Yes, and yes.

Uhmm the more the better... But if we do get this I say we stick to Arena (Kill enemy team X times) type maps for the time being.
What makes a PvP map good?

    Anything that isn't ghost ship.
What things do you like to see in a PvP map?

Hazards (Fire pits, bottemless pits, random npcs)
What is your favorite PvP map from STO and why?

Shanty Town (Ground Assault). It's a big map which you can coomplete by killing X team 60 times or running the virus to the enemy mainframe.
What are your favorite PvP maps from other games and why?

Nothing that could be compared to STO.

I'd rather Ghost Ship over Deserted Facility...

Then again, I'd rather Deserted Facility over Solar Wind, that map's a framerate killer.

In case anyone was curious, I made a prototype map idea in foundry that I published as "Movement Testing".

    Multiple game modes.

What makes a PvP map good?
Strategies that reward intelligent play and differing play styles.

What things do you like to see in a PvP map?
Variety, space to maneuver and not be camped.

What is your favorite PvP map from STO and why?
    Kerrat, Otha, and Shanty Town.

What are your favorite PvP maps from other games and why?
Titan battles on Battlefield 2142. If you ever played one you would know. Ground and vehicle combat with capture points and you have to board the Titan and destroy it to win. The best PvP experience I have ever had, other than real life football games (not the video game).

I want to thank everyone for replying, you brought up some points that I wouldn't have considered, such as preserving frame rate (which when you think about it is definitely important).

As promised we talked about this thread and the issue of PvP maps in the Foundry in this week's Foundry Roundtable podcast. Have a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_z7L_AsnHs

    capture the flag:

interesting concept to bring into STO, similar to team fortess/ unreal tournament if anyone has played it

if you could change the game code, have a game called VIP:

A random sible ship either a player or NPC with uber shields/hull needs to be defended going from a to B
Now found frequenting MWO short term and then Star Citizen long term. Raged Quit PVP long ago

I always think that if we could make our own pvp maps things may be a bit "new".

Not only would I like to play custom foundry maps, but I am- already- making some.

That said, we really are missing a lot of space elements for the foundry. Satellites, stations, ships- lots and lots and lots of ships.

We also lack the ability to scale a space foundry map to a specific size, outside of boxing it in with invisible walls, and that's super problematic because we don't have 'total map height' invisible walls as an element, and there's no way to just demarcate a zone.

The effects one can put on a space map are also terribly limited- it's pretty much just red nebula with lightning, and a single 'green radiation' effect which is super annoying to look at. All the varied ground map options are not available for space maps. And they're not available on a large scale as some of the maps would need to be.
Would you like to see multiple game modes on custom maps, or just deathmatch?

More deathmatch, at least ONE MORE cap and hold map with a different layout. Better defenses for both teams.
What makes a PvP map good?

Before I played STO, I would've said interaction, but really just scenery. Being open with some stuff to maneuver around, but not so dense as to be annoying (so no super dense asteroid fields). Try to keep the utterly gigantic things (planets, huge asteroids) off to the sides or behind invisible walls- they're cool to look at, but generally less cool to interact with.

Honestly more variety in just what maps look like would do wonders- I and many others are tired of the constant red sky in every single pvp map.
What things do you like to see in a PvP map?

Different levels of interaction. More than the occasional metreon cloud, but like areas where shields don't work, or where sensors fail- stuff like that which you can plan around, set up ambushes in or otherwise interact with.

Otherwise, new and interesting vistas. A dyson interior PVP space map would be awesome.
What is your favorite PvP map from STO and why?

Probably Kerrat. It's a big open crossfaction fighting zone. Just need to get rid of the borg and the zone reset, make it a bit smaller, and it'd be awesome.

From a map design perspective, the colours aren't too annoying, even if the dull green is depressing. It's big and open enough with not too large hazards that ou can fly around and have fun without getting caught on stuff, and the main area is big enough that several different fights can be going on at once.
What are your favorite PvP maps from other games and why?

Any map from homeworld would be amazing.
