What's the point in having 3 factions if there is hardly any difference between them?
In the old days, there was a definate difference in play style when it came to Klingon an Fed pvpers. But now, with the advent of cross faction ships, cross faction Rommies, isn't it pointless introducing another faction later on in STO universe?
What would help bring back that distinction?
Single faction specific abilities akin to what Rommies have in way of singularity core abilities?
Have a faction specific slot on ship to add an ability?
i really dont see how they could do another faction. the true way and gamma quadrant dominion have at least half of their ships in lockboxes already. and how would that even be different from a fed faction really. non cloakers, beam array cruisers, pretty pointless. every lock box basically kills that factions chance of ever being made playable.
all thats left thats faction worthy is borg, but that would be pants on head TRIBBLE. you cant take something like the borg twist it into a playable faction. if they were just some form of monster play like in stfs, players would hate that too because then it would be pvp.
Cryptic has left the choice up to the player. Yes, there are all sorts of crossfaction things - but it is the player that decides if they want to use any of it or not. The player can decide how far out on the fringe they want their player to be. There's nothing that requires any faction breaks...it's player choice.

As we have seen many times over in these forums, consoles and gear are not the way to go. Feddies can't be bothered to maintain an KDf alt, hence they want all the shinnies of the kdf (carriers, battle cloak, universal BO stations, leech, ...) . Also OP faction specific consoles and items kill a faction in the long run.
I like what they did with the warbirds. Looking at galaxy, vor'cha and d'deridex they certainly have different themes and styles that make them attractive (forget about consoles and BO traits for a minute here, they are minor flavors not the main thing).
However the BoP has lost its uniqueness, so in a way I would like them to rethink all KDF ships to compensate them for what they lost. Not by primarily tweaking hull to shield mod ratio, but by giving them something unique to kdf ships like the singularity core powers are unique to romulan ships, a clickable klingon opera ... something.
For ground, faction specific kits would be great. Give each class a faction specific set option. alternatively give one class a faction specific set...(random examples: targ-pet kit, thalaron somthing kit, fed-sci explorer somthing kit). This way you feel unique from level -lvl 50, cross faction teaming would become a lot more interesting.
The factions were much more personal and unique before the Lockbox invasion.
I'm not saying the queues are empty of class-specific ships. But be perfectly honest with yourselves. What do you fly when you PVP? Is it a lockbox ship or is it Fed/Klink/Rommie?
I'm not saying the class specific ships are bad. Some are fantastic at what they do. But are they quite good enough? I know players like you Naz that can make a Scimitar sing, but you had an idea in mind when you picked it for it's purpose. I know players like Mai who could breathe new life into an Intrepid or a Nebula. But those sorts of players can see the shine in any ship to a point. We can't base a few good players that are great at what they do and hang the rest of the PVP Community to it.
After all, there's a good reason why older ships like the Galaxy and a few BoPs are being looked at by Cryptic to "Juice-up" - it's because they're just not cutting the mustard compared to the power-creep that is lockbox shipware.
Once upon a time each faction had it's list of faction specific consoles. And when you queued for a certain type of PVP, you knew what you were facing hardware wise. Now most of the consoles can be found on both sides of the war effort, with the Romulans getting to choose which side they prefer.
We were once so proud of our MACO sets. We loved those shields. And the Klinks loved their placate set ability. Sure, you had to grind for it, but it was yours. No longer. Cryptic then decided to save time and money and just swap the sets, change the names, and give them the exact same icons as their existing MACO/Honour Guard sets.
At the end of the day, we're not going in there and seeing the majority of a faction team using their style of ships, or their consoles, or even their weapon types.
Because with one hand comes a massive scope of build and team choices another hand takes away with canon, familiarity and our money.
We don't have the luxury of asking if that's a price worth paying. We didn't decide to have lockbox ships from any and all factions to suddenly play with. That had stats that usually were superior to fleet ships. We didn't decide to swap all our consoles with our sworn enemies, and we didn't get to decide if the energy weapon spectrum was free for all. We don't get a say, or a choice. It's free for all. Good or bad.

A Sad Panda of Industrial calibre. 2010: This is Cryptic PvP. Please hold the line, your call is very important to us...
I, for one, PvP exclusively in a BoP. Right now I use a Fleet Norgh, but I'll probably get a B'Rel Retrofit or a Fleet B'Rel Retrofit eventually and start learning how to use that EBC. I'm far from the best, but I like to think I pull my weight most of the time.
When it comes down to it, I play this way for two reasons: One, I like Klingons. I deleted my Fed toon and made my KDF tactical toon my main because I like Klingons. I use a BoP because I'm stubborn when it comes to the ships I use, and I just keep using the BoP in the hopes that it'll be buffed eventually.
Second reason is because I have zero interest whatsoever in leveling a Romulan toon and working it through all the reputation systems and obtaining the C-store/Fleet ships for it. I have enough trouble TRIBBLE around with PvE on my KDF main, the only toon I use right now, let alone trying to manage a second toon for PvP and PvE. I don't like the PvE in this game for the most part.
I main a Fed Engineer of all things. Most of my alts are feds, not because I like the fed gameplay any better than the klingon gameplay, but because I *can't bloody see* in the dark Klingon interiors and I have to spend like an hour running around Qo'nos whenever I need to train new boffs or get stuff out of the bank, whereas as a fed I can do it in like a minute.
I have a max level KDF tactical captain I use exclusively for BoP flying, be it a phaser cannon ambush bop, or a B'rel torpedo shooter, and I'm currently working on leveling a fed rom Tac to max to captain the S'golth escort I picked up a while back, though he may end up doing the Tac/Sciship thing with the Ha'Nom.
I agree absolutely that the factions need more ways to be unique- except the romulans who already have their tray of space magic that makes them unique, with their battle cloak on all ships and all that jazz.
KDF is guilty of this more then feds even. It is why I try to play my KDF in a BOP a lot more then bugship lately, KDF doesn't even look Klingon at all sometimes when I don't.
Not having anything but superficial factions is by design. It's obviously bad design, sure, but it's what Cryptic is gunning for. Eventually they might change their minds again and look into creating some diversity, but I wouldn't count on it.
the romulans are plenty different from the other 2, but only because the other 2 are so vanila, and when compared to the romulans very plain.
the federation faction should proboly be the only faction that truly has a wide variety of sci ships, and their cruisers should be the best DPS producers of all, with certain beam arrays only they can equip. the kdf should have warbirds with M/AM reactors, with less subterfugeing expertise and more brute force, and battle cruisers that operate more like escorts then cruisers.
its sorta like this right now, but its very watered down feeling, not nearly as specialized as it should be.
The "good" of faction differences is a lie. It was first used to justify the shafting of the KDF, and now used to overbuff the Romulans in exchange for their meagre -40 power.
PVP, especially cross-faction pvp, suffers when there are faction differences, meaning that in an imperfect real world, a faction will have too many advantages and causing that faction to be the only one viable in pvp.
So, no, we need LESS faction differences, especially when we're already at such a state of grind to win.
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
I think this is what we are stuck with, not sure they can do anything to create distinction in the factions anymore without undoing things they made money off of to get here which is a nonstarter.
There seems to be a lack of direction of the game in the factions sense. The direction is as a single story line that two groups follow along very similiarily. I don't think they have the time to really keep two or more distinct factions viable.
If they add a true third faction it should be a trader/pirate faction that operates out of borg space. That way they would have a minor faction that could easily copy the existing story line and give people a more neutral spin for character development. If they add the cardassians they need to go to the KDF through recent diplomacy just so the KDF can have more ships and get another boost to their low population. I see Romulans being split, but all other established minor races need to fold into fed or kdf exclusively. And I want a binary tactical captain!

I joked about it kind of early, that the next faction would make the Romulans look like the Feds/KDF. Course, the faction after that would do the same to the next one.

There's all sorts of gimmicky consoles to create all the Refits and Retrofits that Cryptic could want to sell us...
That still won't happen, because if Cryptic stubbornly refuses to develop even the KDF ship lineup more, the True Way / Cardassians / Dominion will never make it. And if they did, they would be done in a worse, half-TRIBBLE way than the flower-smelling Romulan Republic.
Over the years, Cryptic kept on making more and more Fed starships, yet minimized KDF ship production to a near deathlike state. The lineup of playable ships after 3.5 years of this game being out only confirms this. They have absolutely no idea in fleshing out equal ship selections among factions. Other developers have gone to great lengths in making up new designs for non-Starfleet ship lineups for their games, yet Cryptic hates doing that in a Star Trek game.
Personally, I would LOVE for there to be a bonafide Dominion faction to stomp around the Alpha Quadrant with, but Cryptic has given away most of the canon Dominion warships already, that it's impossible to do so without the game even looking more stupid than it already does.
And OP, the lack of difference between the factions began long ago in the first months of STO coming out. And it began by Fed playerbase demands for taking characteristics that were unique to the KDF. Universal BOFF stations? Check, but now without anyone paying the price of having the flexibility of such a station, while the KDF BOP continues to pay for it. Cloaks? Check. Carriers? Check.
And what has the KDF received in return? Squat. Hell, we didn't even get more Science Ships.
Now we have a subfaction of overpowered ships and BOFFs / BOFF traits that have the Battlecloaks without paying any price whatsoever.
There's no differentiation between the factions because of Fed demands. And now we have an absolutely overpowered subfaction that can play on choose sides, and there's Romulan players clamoring for tokens to be able to switch sides.
And we wonder why this game is in such a circus state?
There is a distinct feeling that cryptic cannot seem to plan more than 1 season / major update ahead. This leads to long term non cohesive game band aided together by spit and luck.
They should set out the following:
6 month plan
1 year plan
3 year plan
6 month plan should be to address the imbalance between the 3 factions in way of boffs etc
1 year plan for new season content including new factions
3 year plan should just be a vision to aim towards which can be fluid.
All this should be shared with the STO community instead of being vague on everything and giving answers like "investigating", "looking into" and then not here anything about it.
That still won't happen, because if Cryptic stubbornly refuses to develop even the KDF ship lineup more, the True Way / Cardassians / Dominion will never make it.
While it is obviously a case of getting ahead of ourselves to talk about the next faction, to say that it won't happen - well...
Look at how many KDF ships existed prior to LoR - added over that three year plus period. Add in the ships that were added with LoR.
Then look at how many Rom ships were added to LoR and how many have been added in just over four months since.
There's no reason to expect something different in the future with new factions.
So even with the KDF having limited ships in comparison to the Feds, it doesn't mean that the next faction won't end up with 30+ ships within a short period after their launched.
And as far as them being Canon ships...it's 2409..."Canon" ended somewhere between 2379 and 2387. Canon goes on all the same...
There is a distinct feeling that cryptic cannot seem to plan more than 1 season / major update ahead. This leads to long term non cohesive game band aided together by spit and luck.

All this should be shared with the STO community instead of being vague on everything and giving answers like "investigating", "looking into" and then not here anything about it.
Without trying to be a Cryptic Apologist, from the way things are discussed - it does appear that there are those short, medium, and long term goals for the game. The reality of the situation is that certain things likely take longer or require more effort that expected, deadlines still have to be met, things get cut...and yeah, we get what we get. I think we've seen an improvement on their part in many aspects, and that improvement is likely from increased revenue leading to increased resources that can be invested in the game. They're still going to face that reality of things taking longer than expected or requiring more effort...and thus stuff will still get cut or potentially delayed/piecemealed out.
As for sharing it...um...why? What company does? Imagine if Apple were to share all the info on their next three iPhones...how many folks would put off on purchasing a model or two knowing that something that much better is coming down the pipe? And then when that something better finally arrives, well...it's old news.
It's like a woman stripping...there she is, wearing her normal clothes. There's the anticipation and excitement of what kind of lingerie she's wearing. Oh yeah, oh yeah...then you see it...oh yeah, oh yeah. Then there's the anticipation and expectation of the various goodies beneath the lingerie. Oh yeah...blah, blah. Then there's the anticipation and expectation of what one's going to do with said woman. Oh yeah, blah, blah. Then there's the rolling over, falling asleep, and snoring. There's a process. Cryptic doesn't want us rolling over, falling asleep, and snoring two minutes after they've shown us the goodies...they want to share in that anticipation and excitement through the process.

Funny but true. The new always outshines the existing until a newer new arrives.
