Disable/Destroy Toggle

A recent discussion in our fleet forums made me think of this idea:

Just a simple toggle button between destroy and disable would be great, so you could essentially do all these missions but just render enemy ships useless instead of blowing them up, this would even have strategic significance as you could avoid being hit by warp cores going critical that way. Perhaps with the disable you would get the option to send boarding party and return even more loot and tech' that you get from blowing it up. The enemy ship would then fade away once the loot was returned to prevent the map filling with disabled ships.

I have heard this mentioned before, IMHO i think it would be a good idea to allow ships to be 'disabled', maybe as a random occurence rather than a choice by the player. Disabled ships could then be seized for extra bounty!

That would be quite interesting and would fit with the more Starfleet ethos of not randomly destroying starships, rather disabling them and taking their crew/captain for trial and confiscating the ship.

If they ever did a Federation rep then each ship in a mission disabled that way would provide x marks to represent the Starfleet way.

Same with the KDF as they would board the ship for marks/goodies but would get more for destroying them so its a trade off between destroying or boarding

A Fed/KDF rep could be done via the current missions, a ship kill is x marks, disable is x marks, ground kill x marks ect so its not a grind but something you do as the quests to level up.

    I like this idea better.

Don't forget, though, one purpose of destruction of enemy ships/forces is to clean up the map and remove those objects to improve performance. Littering the map with "dead" ships is just one more thing the engine has to keep track of. In maps where there are a lot of bad guys in one place, it would get cluttered really fast.

That's one reason why we don't have persistent debris clouds every time we blow something up. Which would also be realistic and cool, but impractical.

That's why the op suggested that looted ships would just fade out. This would deal with the problem you described.

Yeah, I'd want to see someone 'research' how frequently a destroyed ship explodes. Like every damn car in a movie that hits a speed bump goes up in a fiery explosion. Gets a little old after awhile. It'd be cool to see a little explosion then the ship list/roll/drift off dead in space. Maybe with a small cloud of debris around it.

I want to see "Mythbusters: The Star Trek Edition". :D

Since I have an interest in Battle Fleet Gothic, I'm quite fond of crippling things.

In BFG, when you shoot ships, you knock of hull points and roll for bonus stuff. Like knocking engines out, taking off weapons, breaching hulls (should be a given really, you're shooting it), destroying it's structural integrity, and a veritable plethora of others.

Anyway, there's a decent chance of leaving a crippled hulk (or if you're lucky) a flaming hull drifting across the map.

Now: I would love features like that. Not just so you could taunt people as the float helplessly into the abyss (unless you decide to finish them off), but also for the added realism and opportunities.

Also, the idea of a closely thought battle ending Wrath of Khanilly... Or an enemy crippling you, and you still going on to win would just feel awesome.

Of course, this could be quite annoying: Lucky shots or overpowering enemies making you fail where you really shouldn't...

Anyway: More on topic - It would be nice for my happy-dappy-feddies to not have to murder every single person I come across.
