Team vote kick; a can of worms you say? I say it's a can of gummy worms!
Would the introduction of a team vote kick button ruin the world of pugging? I am here to put forth the argument that no, it will not and that it will improve it.
The community of star trek online is quote easily one of the most friendly and helpful bunch of gamers that I have had the pleasure of being a part of. That said, we have a few bad eggs that could abuse this power. To this I say, 1 or even 2 people would not be able to kick someone. It would take 3 people vote kicking to knock someone out of a group or 6 in a 10 man group and so forth. Being that the trolls only have power when other trolls are present, there is little threat of being kicked when contributing.
STO does not have an in game dps meter. You are not evaluated by the dps you do, the healing thrown out or the hits you take. If your flying around and clearly participating, the kick hammer will rarely a swing your way.
Participation...you queue an stf to get marks, dilithium and borg neural processors; possibly to enjoy the game as well. It takes people firing their weapons to bring something down, for two-four people doing the work, looking over to see a leech going afk the entire stf. It leave a a bad taste in their mouth. Those afkers are making the match longer by not contributing anything, they should be kicked like they deserve.
Tl:dr. Team vote kick would add more to the game then loose, let the hating commence
Wont work you have entire groups of people that live to TRIBBLE others, these people will team up and grief pugs. Vote to Kick will NOT work and WILL be abused. You want to deal with leechers remove the leaver penalty, as it stands the only people who get punished for not wanting to play with leechers are the people who actually leave.
While I have encountered a very few actual AFK/leechers, I do know they are out their I just don't see them as that big of an issue and VtK is a big can of worms that should never be opened.
Only exception: when I queue for an Elite, and Cryptic annoyingly has me join an already in-progress, failed Optional, mission, then I should have the right to leave with impunity.
it will being abused and forum overrun with demands that it will be removed for years to come, it's one of those idea that sound good but is not worth it to have
I'm not sure that's accurate. How does the CE event determine who the "winner" is then?
Zactly. Despite people persistently denying it, loot most certainly depends on DPS, for one. In fact, these days, when I'm in a bad pug, I ere rejoice, as I know I'll be getting like a 115 Marks and 11 Neural processors. :P Seriously, in a weak team, the game thinks you did pretty good, and rewards you accordingly.
I was always taught that if somebody won't play by the rules, you shouldn't play with them; well in the current system you can choose not to play with them, but you're the one stuck with the leaver penalty.
I would much prefer the option to not be teamed with anyone I have set on "ignore". If everyone added leechers to their ignore list whenever they came across them, the leechers would eventually end up with no one to play with. Any elitists who ignore everyone that has MK XI equipment would also eventually end up with no one to play with.
I say the benefits of a vote to kick outweigh the potential for abuse.
I also say that anyone who disagrees with the above is obviously an AFK LEECHER who doesn't want to earn his keep.
:P

Sorry, wrong forum.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
Only exception: when I queue for an Elite, and Cryptic annoyingly has me join an already in-progress, failed Optional, mission, then I should have the right to leave with impunity.
Absolutely the best option. The vote thing is nothing but an abuse button. Don't believe me? Go play SWTOR. Ever since they put that damn thing in, the Que times have gone off the charts. Many times I had to log before the Que popped. Then when it does, a lot of times it was a bunch of kids just queuing people in, then kicking them for laughs. PVE instances have become a thing only guild members can do together without being kicked. Then of course it means signing up for the instance 2 weeks in advance on the forums, and for what? The chance I might get a helmet?
I'm no fan of leechers, but leeching overall isn't such a horrible issue that we need such a feature...... of course, I'm not the type of person to go raging and cursing all over the estf map because we didn't get an optional either.
If drops went directly into a players inventory rather than being fought over then people wouldn't care so much about leechers. However since leechers are grabbing stuff that belongs to the people that earned them it ticks people off.
Nah, I think people would still care. Leechers make the mission harder to complete, so the honest players are getting less rewards for the time regardless. And even if this weren't true, most people resent working for something while someone else gets the same thing for free.

If you guys dont like PUGS then join the elite STF channel and team up with an awesome group. One other option is to get some friends together and do a private STF. Believe me with a great group of friends that are properly equipped ESTF's are easy.
Did all 3 of them the other day I hate into the hive so I dont count that one. Anyhow we did Infected Elite Space and had 6 minutes left on the optional. Khitomer was even better The scimitar didnt even fire the tholaron weapon that ship crashed like butter.
Cure was even more impressive, we had 8 minutes left on the optional.
So stop whining about pugs and do something about it.
Thanks for not adding anything to the discussion. I always complete my runs, 20k dps carries will carry any group. This isn't about not getting through them, but carrying undeserving leechers
This about slackers getting a free ride when the run can go faster, slackers that get a something for doing nothing and slackers that are tarnishing an otherwise fun event. This is about kicking useless slackers so they don't reap the benefits of other players.
I understand that people as a whole are closed minded and prefer to go with idioms "I have a sandwich, so you can be starving," but cmon, the leecher problem is there and shouldn't be swept under the rug because you don't need to experience it
you (aka player that like kick vote idea) in game with 4 other players and you 1 min from 45 fleet marks a kick vote called, 4 yes and no 45 fleet mark for you

Anyone that ticked off about this needs psychological counseling.... not a vote-to-kick feature.

Where do ya work man? Would love to work with ya, you do 100% of the work, I chill out all day and if anyone asks....we'll say we did it 50/50. I'm sure you wouldn't mind, right?

Everyone knows a vote-kick system *could* be exploited. However the current system *is* being exploited.
It's a question of which is worse.
The problem of the current system is that exploiting it does two things - griefs other users and gives a benefit to the griefer. Exploiting the vote-kick only does on - griefs other users.
Any given user can freely exploit the current system. It takes a number of them acting in concert to exploit the vote-kick system.
Logically, fewer exploits will happen with the vote-kick system.

I will take that chance. AFK Leechers can be given no quarter.
City of Heroes always had a kick feature. It was limited to just the team leader tho so players couldn't team up to abuse it.
Now there was indeed some people that abused the feature but it was in no way the epidemic that the anti-kick faction try to pretend it would be with their fear-mongering.
Actually it was quite badly abused. If you were actually there you would know that
I say the benefits of a vote to kick outweigh the potential for abuse.
There is no 'potential' for abuse. It would be abused, period. It would cause more problems than it solved and would only end up being removed
The solution to the problem is simple: make your own groups and don't pug.
Logically, fewer exploits will happen with the vote-kick system.
If thats your idea of 'logic' you are clearly no vulcan. Logically it will be exploited from the instant it was implemented, would cause significant abuse and would quickly be removed because of it. Just as it has in every other game that every tried to implement anything like that

More so than you, apparently. I said vote-kick would result in less abuse than the current system, and gave some reasons why. You are relying on nothing more than assertion to say that it would be more abused.
Apparently you're unaware that WoW has had vote-kick for years without 'quickly being removed,'

The current system being exploited doesn't mean vote kicking is the solution. Replacing one abusive behavior with another abusive behavior isn't an acceptable solution. Code to measure participation is not biased and doesn't put the gaming experience of one player into the hands of another to be abused or exploited. If you don't participate, you get nothing and the more you do it, the longer you're (account bound) banned from participating in queued events. That stops leeching instantly.
Code to measure participation *is* biased. It's been tried and it's a tricky implementation to get right. Look at how much trouble they have getting the rankings right in fleet actions. Participation would have to leverage the same kind of scoring system, and it's already not working well.
Participation metrics may stop people from going completely AFK. They won't stop people from griefing by gaming the metrics. And you'll create an entirely new problem when people who are participating don't get rewards because the metric doesn't work perfectly.

No, it isn't. You don't participate, you get no reward. Very simple.
Define "participate" in clear and unequivocal terms and I'll show you how the system doesn't work.
If you can't, then you don't have a system. You just have wishful thinking. The equivalent of "Prevent bad people from logging in, then the game is better. Very simple."

But what kind of code would it need to be? Checking every 30 seconds if a action was made? Actually I like that idea
Create macro that toggles an activity every 29 seconds.
Exploit achieved.

Make it a selectable option filter in the queue menu. You can either PUG missions with a vote to kick option, or without it.
Then we'll see which option is more popular, and how much this potential abuse actually happens.
