Will new pve content eventuality hit diminishing returns?

I was having a discussion with a fleet mate a while ago. I postulated that cryptic might focus on pvp when they run out of pve stuff to do. He mentioned that they can always make new baddies to fight and gear to grind.

Who do you think is right? Aren't there natural limits to the rate at which they can fudge the trek IP? Aren't we at reputation store saturation point already? Will you really make yet another alt when the next faction and excuse to start the game all the way from the beginning without any of the hard won perks from the last weeks/months/years counting in your next reincarnation?

Aren't there some serious draw backs to doing this over and over, won't they next to turn to something else to find growth eventually? Or is it just my own intolerance to having multiple versions of my self, grinding a limited number of predictable coop missions because of ** new content **?

    The issue honestly is:

    1) PvP has never been at the forefront of any Cryptic MMO made to date - going back 10 years and the time of City of Heroes

    as a result:

    2) Cryptic has no real experience in creating a good PvP structure in any of their MMOs. They focus on PvE replayability; and hope you'll create multiple Alt characters <--- This was a hallmark of CoH's longevity.

Cryptic may want to break out of this cycle and create a better PvP experience; but until Cryptic/PWE upper management tells them to do exactly that, I wouldn't hold my breathe as to when (if ever) PvP in STO will get a good/hard reworking, or any real improvement over the system that currently exists.

And while I'm not a hard core PvPer, I'd like to see the system get some actual attention; and get some sort of consensual sector space 'control' PvP system that might grant PvE bonuses to the faction that has control (much like WoW implemented in a few zones a couple years back); along with loot drops and PvP dilithium rewards.<--- This would give players an incentive to participate (IMO).

All that said, given Cryptic's track record with PvP - I wouldn't hold my breath.

So... STO is more likely to die than it is for cryptic to finally get round to focusing on pvp?

    Welp.

    Now ya got it. ;)

Honestly the fact that the space pvp is as good at its core as it is... is a complete fluke.

They where likely shocked so many people where pvping in the first year... they tried to deny the STO pvper existed. Then they released so much PvE grind that there metrics must match there hopes now. Cause to pvp you need to first complete a few 100 hours of pve content. :)

i think its already happened, even the repeatable stuff gets stale, pvp never does. you dont even need the pve missions to level all the way to 50 anymore with pvp, doffing, and the qued content. instead of making more, they should really rebuild all the pve that the game came with at launch with an overhawl at least as good as the martoc missions for the kdf were overhauled. the stuff from launch is very lame compared to the current stranded.

wrapping up the story line with the borg and unidine, and connecting it all to the iconians, its been almost exactly 3 years since the storyline of the game even advanced. missions like that are all pretty low millage vs the repeatable stuff thats been all they have been making for 2 years. pvp on the other hand has more replayability then any pve could ever have. because the other players are the ever changing content

Agreed, I never really get tired of PvP. Give me a good balanced zone in Ker'rat, and I'll PvP to my heart's content. I only regret that we don't have enough options to earn stuff via PvP, using missions and kill rewards, etc.

Plenty of people who never go into the arena/C&H queues are still in Kerrat, so maybe Cryptic needs to develop that kind of zone further, instead of nuking it.

Maybe have some lucrative reputation farming stuff in an open PvP zone.

Unfortunately, PvP become repeatable too. If u dare to change something u are screwed. U need at least one toon, that is "repeatable". Its stupid.

    Hrmmm, er...

...almost every encounter is going to be different.

If you only play with the same people and again the same people over and over again - then it would be the same.

It's one of the reasons that some folks prefer PUGs or PUGmades to Premades, because it adds even more variety to it - it becomes endless content where you're unlikely to remember anything being the same unless it really stood out or you happened to end up with things actually being the same.

Doesn't mean that more maps - whether just as the background or space maps where one could make more use (or even be forced to make more use) of the environment wouldn't be nifty, imho. It's funny though, how even on maps where folks could use the environment - battles still tend to end up at the top of the map.

edit: As far as the OP and PvE content...PvE content is potentially endless.

At least they're not outright lying to us anymore about pvp being important or being worked on.

    There's that.

Frankly, I think the only sound advice that one can give new players at this time is to stay away from PVP in STO.

The last I heard was that it was going to be part of the S9/S10 endgame improvements.

There's supposed be another Rep added by the end of the year as well...but it would be speculation at this point to say it's PvP Rep - as they haven't said.
