Within the next few weeks, I wanted to try and set up some weekday "tournaments" that randomly sort teams. Here's the concept:
1) Players enter individually (entry fee to be determined).
2) First come, first serve in multiples of 10 (so that each game is 5v5). If a multiple of 10 can't be reached, the last people to join are excluded.
3) Players are sorted by class (Tac, Eng, Sci). Each class is shuffled randomly, then spread evenly between all the teams. This ensures that each team has nearly the identical number of captain types.
4) Nothing banned (but no exploits; example: voldemort bug). Build your ship as best you can to be ready for everything.
5) Winners take all, double or nothing. Winners gain double their entry fee, losers get nothing.
Depending upon if there's interest or not, I may even attempt to track statistics of Wins and Losses per player/handle to set up some sort of ladder scoring, followed by invitational-only special events for the top 100 (assuming it even has that much interest).
Questions I had specifically are:
What is a good entrance fee? I want to encourage participation, but also ensure that the player base isn't watered down by those who aren't PvP capable (though there may be some free to enter events as well, to entice new blood into PvP)
Is there an easy way to set this up? I'm old school, and typically draw names out of a hat. That would take a great deal of time, so if there's an alternative, I'd love to know about it.
Concerns about the premise of the event? I already hear grumblings about nothing being banned, but honestly, most things people consider to be "cheese" are just things they don't want to bother trying to counter. Also, since teams aren't "premade", rather just pug groups of skilled players, you shouldn't encounter the type of teamwork normally seen that makes those "cheese" abilities so potent. If people want to duplicate this format with their own rules, all the better.
