Dealing with lag

So I've been getting more and more annoyed lately, especially with PVP because of lag. In most PVE scenarios (unless there are other players there) I'm fine. The occasional half-second of lag but otherwise it's fine. But if I go into a PVP match, I'll fly up to where everyone is and can't get a shot off because I'm lagging so much. By the time the lag is gone, I'm dead. I respawn, rinse and repeat.

I've already lowered every setting on the game to it's lowest value so I don't know what else to do to improve my gameplay. I don't have any programs running in the background that might take away from resources.

Anyone know any thing I might have missed that might help?

    Frankly, I think the only sound advice that one can give new players at this time is to stay away from PVP in STO.

    I call hax. Ahem, it's one of the rare times that I ever call hax. It's probably delusional as Hell on my part, but I still call hax all the same.

    Hrmm, this may not apply to what you're saying though. Does it happen all the time or just from time to time, so to speak?

    If it is the time to time, have you noticed any similarities to the groups you are fighting with or against?

    Cause that's where I call hax...ahem.

    The screen can be buried in pets, poo, wells, rifts, singularities, etc, etc, etc...and it will be fine.

    Against certain opponents - not even a quarter of it - will cause all sorts of issues.

    Okay, I honestly don't call it hax...but it is something that I've noticed. I'm in the US. Against primarily European teams...it's usually pretty bad. Doesn't matter if it is in the queues or Ker'rat...huge US based Fedballs cause no issues, but German based mini Fedballs cause all sorts of issues.

    Try using proxy. It works for me. EU one works fine from time to time.

    I would try to use half-resolution. Everything will look pretty ugly, but it will significantly improve game performance even with all the spam.

    i really hate when a match gets laged to death, makes it really hard to attack and defend well. and it seems to happen to me more often then not.

    The game is CPU heavy so changing resolution most times wont help.The UI is like running 2 STOs in the backround.Ive seen other games heavy on CPU but this UI is almost like Prime 95 :rolleyes:

    There are multiple, un-related things that people call lag:

    1] Latency - comunication to the server takes a long time, i.e. you have high ping. Causes rubber-banding.
    -> Test your ping

    2] CPU is overloaded. (Usually actually RAM memory.)
    -> Launch task manager and watch CPU% and RAM%

    3] GPU is overloaded. (Usually actually GPU memory.)
    -> You might have vendor tools that will tell you something

    4] Server is overloaded.
    -> Everyone will be complaining.

    From your description, it sounds like a case of CPU/RAM capacity.

    Why only PvP? The game definitely runs more calcs in PvP; in PvE the client does some of the lifting.

    Recommendation: Try turning into a support ship and let the other suckers that aren't lagging go fight it out :P

    Lag is definitely something that kills me in PvP. With little or no lag, I can fly circles around most opponents in my Fleet Norgh and using positioning to avoid getting shot at as much. With heavy lag/rubberbanding, it's all I can do to try keeping my ship's nose lined up with the target, leaving me vulnerable to attacks from others. I also have to concentrate so much on maneuvering that I'm not paying as much attention to what's coming from behind or the sides.

    It's just something one learns to deal with. Fortunately, dying in PvP doesn't result in anything negative beyond a blow to your ego. Even better, dying in battle as a KDF player helps complete a mission!
