Low fps during CE elite on a decent spec?

Hi all.

Just wondering if its just me or it affects others as well.

My rig is a i5 3570k (not overclocked yet), 8 gb ddr3 corsair vengence white artic, gtx 570 1250mb gaming on a 24in screen so 1080p windowed fullscreen cos full screen seems to cause tearing.

Anyhow i can play almost any game fine and even arma2 and 3 which are probably the hardest games to play well on any rig. But, somehow im having fps issues on 2 mission in sto. One is that starbase defense mission where there's absolutely tones of ships at the end and it crawls sometimes. Now more recently the CE elite mission. Generally i have 60fps easy in sto even during battle heavy missions but CE and anything that spams effects and weapons off like mad it seems to just cause massive fps drops.

I have found out its not my gfx card because i was watching gpuz and the gpu load sensor was saying its like 30-50% so very underutilized. Im sure i had much better fps in CE elite either a few patches ago or back on 314.22 nvidia drivers (updated to the 320.49 atm to try).

I mean going from 60 stable in almost all of sto and CE after a min playing that fps go to 35 then 25 and sometimes 15.

Can cryptic explain this i have a decent cpu which if arma 3 can handle decently which is a heavy heavy cpu dependent game then sto should easily and any other mmo is fine like the secret world on max. And the gpu is more than fine but for some reason is very underutilized during CE elite (anywhere else the utilization is 90% or more) how come it drops during CE but is 90% say during being on ds9 or during cse or whatever?

Somits weird here i think.

I have the same CPU with a slightly lesser GPU than you and I experience the slowdowns during crystalline as well, but it is only during some missions, so I suspect it's the particles from other players.

    Intel i5 3570K
    Asrock Z77 Pro 4
2x4 GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 1.35v
    OCZ RevoDrive 3 120 GB
EVGA Nvidia GTX 560 TI FPB
    Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM (1920x1200)
    W8.1 Pro x64

In game settings DX11 beta, maximum, no AA. FPS can dip to single digits during Crystalline.

I also have these issues on CE Elite and some other maps. I also noticed on the Risa Event map when i am on an instance with close to 50 players on it, things are also very laggy and low FPS. When i change the instance to one with low players, maximum of 40 players for example everything is smooth and things start slowing down when the amount of players start getting close to 50.

I suspect your right its all the effect spam even tho it really shouldnt tax the cpu as much imo considering theres far worse effect spam in other games and mmos that dont dip fps like that.

Hopefully some sort of optimization can be done i.e limit the visuals for effects by capping it or only showing for the team your on instead of the other guys or somit i dunno but somit.

I tried turning aa off and other things but it didnt help because it was taxing the cpu not the gpu as i said the gpu was only being used about 35-45% compared to just other normal stuff and esfts being about 90% utilized.

Hopefully they can make CE elite map make more use out of the gpu for the effect spam perhaps or whatever to take the burden off the cpu somewhat?

Oh and im using dx9 (i think) cos its very hard to tell what ur using as it doesnt exactly show what ur using and for some reason picking dx9 or 11 doesnt make the screen stutter when switching anymore so i duno if the switch even works anymore..

I have a Msi HD 7850 2GB OC edition which can max out BF3, Skyrim, Far Cry 3, and countless other games but on CE my FPS also drops down severely.
I guess it's because there are lots of things going on. But CE isnt the only event where a lot is going on, yet only there it lags.

I have a much older setup than you, I can run Arma II on High settings at about 30-40.

STO runs at around 40/50ish, however like you it drops significantly during CCE, but never below 20.

Perhaps it's because of the textures and special effects that the Crystal shards and the entity itself?

i think this lag is caused by the mini map keeping track of all the players..

Its the gravely unoptimized game that does this.

    Best way to increase FPS:

    - DX9 (DX11 slows game down even more since LoR)
    - Dynamic Lights: Off
    - Visual FX: Medium/Low
    - Terrain and Character distance to 50% or so.

Sad but true, this game is supposed to run on 30 fps with a high end rig.

Having a i7 3770k @ 4.5Ghz and a 670GTX everything on maximum (Except the few earler mentioned settings) will keep my rig 60fps in CE, but just barely (Which is pretty lousy for a game of this low complexity).

Turning off all unwanted UI components 'might' help as well,

This game seriously eats too much CPU and not properly utilizing more cores to the max. My GPU usage hardly ever tops 50%. The settings i mentioned are for some reason most CPU bound.

Sad thing is, i can put ALL my settings on the very max, disabling the UI with a keybind and have 60-70-80fps.

I party blame the UI for it, they said they optimized it but its as laggy and resource draining as ever.

Something I noticed earlier Torpedo Spread 3 + Plasma Torpedo = Slide show with singular digit FPS.

CE usually doesn't give me issues, however the starbase defense one you mentioned yeah. Big time lag for me, but than again my system isn't top of the line anything so I deal with it.

Its mostly down to PartGen... or Particle Generation.

All that plasma, weapons fire, explosions of other ships around you... is mostly particle based texturing. If theres a lot of that around, and it aint optimised to scale up (if theres not a lot of it), or down (if theres a lot of it) then at the upper end of particle gen it will grind a game client to a halt.

Its a pretty common problem in games that use PartGen.
