How to alter BOFF costume files to use on a Captain?

amwolfeamwolfe Member Posts: 6 Arc User
I am making a captain from an existing BOFF character. I can approximate her looks from the sliders and uniform pieces, but thought it would be easier to rename her saved costume file and use it.

However, the tailor "Load Existing Costume" somehow differentiates between BOFF and Capt. files. I have tried altering the tags in the properties, and renaming the file to match an existing Capt. costume, but it still won't load in the tailor when altering the Capt.

Any ideas on how to get this to work?

Thanks

the tailor shouldn't differentiate between BOFF and Captain saves.

i myself have my Tac Captain as 1st officer to my Eng Captain and one of my other BOFFs is (after a little editing) also my new Tac Romulan Captain...

i can only assume they are maybe a different race in which case try this

    edit -

i guess if its a Romulan it might have something to do with the faction allegiances but you can play around with that in the tool as well.

and pay attention to the new outfit only checkbox in the tailor just in case you missed that and its TRIBBLE up what you want to do.

also try saving/loading it more than once (make multiple copies and load them in more than once per try).

to say the tailor is glitchy atm is an understatement.

let us know if it works out because if you can't load a boff save onto a captain that's a bug...or a completely stupid, undocumented, unnecessary and needlessly restrictive change...but so was removing undo/redo so...

Thank you, that tool will come in handy. It almost worked too!

The BOFF is a Liberated Borg human female (the C-store purchase version) and the Capt. is to be a Liberated Borg human female.

After running the BOFF file through the tool, it will now load and be visible in the tailor for the Capt.
Still won't "load" to be on the character, but I can see it now in the costume screen.

try loading it a few times repeatedly

i have had a problem getting loads to "take" recently.

does it by any change load but put the cap in kind of default casual attire ?
because that's what i was getting...

one way i got it to work was to do one load which changed their body/face etc but put them in the wrong uniform and then did another costume only load with that checkbox ticked which then put the right costume on them.

if you can't get it to work beyond that maybe you should start a thread in the bugs section and link this one or something maybe they'll pay more attention to a subscriber...maybe...

the tailor is in a mess atm :( and the last time it was only sorted out with close developer interaction...which PW doesn't let us do any more :(

Here is the sequence and the results.

Edit; I didn't realize the "outfit only" button was functional. It does NOT work for me. if I click that, there are no costumes visible. Very odd.

ok this is gonna sound really weird but when you get to the stage it just loads the default woman...that's the blond in the pic 4 ...change her features/uniform using the menus so she looks like roughly like what you're going for and try and load it again.

i think that worked for me a couple times.

oh and switch the uniform selector etc to advanced so you you can see the all the drop down menus etc

that new uniform selector...i think its part of the problem...

notice the default woman is wearing the uniform top selected in the new selector...

those long leather pants...which are a generic item...i know for fact are auto selected by the tailor when it doesn't see the 7 of 9 selection as present...

but we're fighting a buggy pile of TRIBBLE here.

it takes a long time to load if you have many saves in the screenshot folder.
i thought it wasn't working at first too but eventually it showed the saves for all races and sexes.
...although they may have been filtered by faction

Update; got tired of fighting with that character so I went to something else. Messed around with a different character. Same thing.

Load outfit no longer works, period.

On any character I tested. BOFF or Capt. didn't matter.

Also, "Outfit only" doesn't load anything for me, it remains a blank window. It never loads anything. It never has.

sorry to hear that amwolfe :(

can only suggest maybe deleting the cache folder and doing a force verify at the next time you fire the game up just incase some of the games files have got "confused" over time if you feel like trying again.

best make a post in the bugs section of the forum.

i fiddle with the tailor and my Boffs a lot and i consider myself quite good at designing characters in it and HATE what they have done to the tailor and the lack of meaningful contact with the devs we have now so my best wishes in finding a solution or prompting action go with you.

i will offer one last and last ditch solution:

sto for me doesn't show menus when you take screen shots so this is what i would do.

it will be easier for you if your sto does show menus in screen shots but i dunno why there seems to be a difference for that for some people.

    run sto in a window

open paint (or some other image program)

open your boff in the tailor and adjust the screen so you can see all the menus and settings in advanced mode.

    press "print screen"

    switch to the image program

paste from the clipboard into the image program

    save the image

go back to sto and scroll the the advanced mode box if you need to and take another screenshot in exactly the same way so you have pics of ALL the settings.

repeat this for each section of the character editor.

    load your captain

    load an image

alt-tab between them and do all the settings manually.

i know its a pain in the butt but its something for a raining sunday afternoon or something if you really wanna make it happen.

really sorry i couldn't help you any more :(
i appreciate you want to get a character looking just the way you want.
    i'm just the same.
    seems Cryptic doesn't...mumble grumble...

\o/ for F2P games where they give you 5 customisable characters per character but character customization doesn't work properly !...ye know one's gonna care about that...that's sarcasm btw Cryptic...

i will offer one last and last ditch solution:

This is the ONLY way I've ever gotten costumes the same for any characters. And I had hoped that with the 'costume only' checkbox that it would get better, but it hasn't.

I also end up clicking on color palettes to show which color was chosen for certain areas. Takes absolutely forever, very painful. :(

Thanks for the link to the character editor - will give it a try.

you used to able to do it through redo/undo

which is probably why so many are complaining about its nonsensical removal.

you could load one character change something small and change it back so redo/undo lit up, cancel that edit, load another character and hit either redo or undo (i forget which) and it would load in the previously edited character from the undo/redo buffer.

but ofc they removed that for no good reason

its not like you could get looks you weren't meant to have or something either because if the tailor encountered something like that it would just use a default or generic piece so you couldn't make a Human with Vulcan pointy ears or stick a Klingon woman in Orion gear or anything...

it was very handy for making aliens that looked like another race tho...

and ofc moving body shapes and faces and uniforms between races and boffs and captains

I just don't get why they can't make it so you can just have a default uniform of your choice for each crew. I like all the BOffs to have the same costume, but change the colors on trim or shirt or something for each specialty. I find it frustrating that I can't actually save a standard uniform for tac, sci and eng BOffs for each captain and have it load properly on a new BOff without going through all these machinations. :(

Seems like that would be a basic thing most captains would want. Oh well, thank goodness for the sto community's help. And thank you for your hints and tips. Much appreciated.
