I'm a sucker for classic ships and every so often I get the urge to bust out my NX class or my TOS constitution and use them instead of my Galaxy Dreadnought or Multi-vector Prometheus. Is there a point to keeping the early ships aside from nostalgia or a pure love of the designs? Granted you can put newer weapons on them and beef them up that way but are there updated versions of the ships with more console and weapons slots? Some of my ships are just sitting there and I'm only holding on to them because they got me through some fun times in the game. I don't even bring them out for nostalgia anymore (my Sovereign).
If there's a reason (like being able to make a Constitution refit not get slaughtered by everything at VA) then I'd like to hold on to specific ships and work on improving them. If not, why do I keep them if they're only going to take up space?
Nostalgia is about the only reason. Yes, you can put VA level weapons and consoles on them, but they are still very inferior to VA level ships and won't last long against them (though some people have mentioned being able to pull it off). You will probably learn new profanity if you take them into an STF or another fleet action.
As far as I know, the "refits" are the only vessels that give you more options on VA ships, and once you've unlocked them from the C-Store, you get those benefits without having to have the ships take up slots. Personally, if I get the urge to fly one of the low level ships, I'll just reclaim it from the C-Store, deck it out as required, play with it a while and then junk it since I can reclaim it later.
EDIT: Note that if you trash the free ships you received while leveling up, you can only reclaim them with large amounts of dilithium. The C-Store ships are the only free reclaims. I think fleet ships are non-reclaim, too, but I'm not in a fleet so I don't know. (No fleet solicitations, please.)
I've used my Connie ship in the Deuterium station defense before. Took half an hour to win, and nearly popped a few times, but the old gal was able to hang on.
I wouldn't do anything with other players (pvp, stfs etc) in them, but they can certainly be made to work in the VA level.
It does help being an Engineer to keep it alive.
