Why doesn't Cryptic care?

section31agent#8506 section31agent Member Posts: 665 Arc User
Guys I have been here for a long time and I feel very frustrated. Like you all I am having some real questions about STO.

1. Why don't they use the in game mail to tell players we know there is a problem and we are working on it?

2. Why have they not fixed problems from over 3 years ago like missions that have your crew drop into a hole and you can't find them?

3. Why do they ignore the customer complaints?

4. As a lifer what happend to the rewards programs we were led to believe were going to be implemented?

5. Why don't they simply take the WHOLE FREAKING SYSTEM down for a week and fix it?

These are just the tip of the iceberg and the STO Titanic is cruising at full speed on a collision course.

I know exactly what you mean, back at launch, they did actually listen to their players but unfortunately, I think its more to do with PWE and how they control Cryptic. But I wouldn't trust Daniel Stahl, he abandoned this job and game when he thought the ship was sinking and then came back when it suited him... Not a good leader...

Shhhh you are disturbing the silence. :D

When they are making money hand over fist just by releasing ships for zen store, that is all that matters. Once servers are up and people get their new shiny ships all will be forgotten.

I think this game should just be called "Generic "Star Trek" Themed Space MMO" and not actually have the right to use the Star Trek franchise in such a disgusting and sell out way.

No doubt. It is Star Trek..how can it not make money? i doubt CBS gives a damn about anything else other than the 'pay check'. You know things like quality and assurance.

    Because they eat babies.

But to be fair, their Support response time as of late has been, at best, completely sluggish.

    1. Unnecessary.

    2. Dead horse.

    3. Because A) customers are fickle and what they want this week will change next week and B) if I had to field all the complaints they get I'd tend to ignore them too, re: point 3.A

    4. Veteran's rewards? Heard of them?

    5. Unrealistic expectation.

No MMO does this. We have quite a lot of developer interaction on the forums and they keep us very well up to date on what they're doing compared with pretty much every other MMO I've ever played. If you care, come to the forums.

    2. Why have they not fixed problems from over 3 years ago like missions that have your crew drop into a hole and you can't find them?

Because it doesn't make them any money

    3. Why do they ignore the customer complaints?

They don't. Well, they ignore some of the whiney self-entitled ones. I would too.

    They happened.

THIS ISN'T HOW YOU FIX THINGS. I'm amazed at how many people always suggest this. Take the servers down and fix everything, when a great lot of problems only happen when the server is running at high load. Moronic suggestion.

These are just the tip of the iceberg and the STO Titanic is cruising at full speed on a collision course.

Maybe you guys that don't think Cryptic is doing such a good job should start some sort of Kickstarter to buy Cryptic from PWE so you can then sit on the board and dictate how the business, and its three current games, are run?

Wouldn't that be the positive, sensible, logical, sane, adult thing to do?

    What?

It only took 8 months to swap some stats around on the flamethrower and get it released. In trade for that I am now crashing in sector space with LoR :D

Naturally their top priority is to create new items and sell those and will only do bug fixes on them while they do still sell.

It's just common sense really. You want to waste 2 weeks working on some old stuff for zero profit you might not even be able to do anything about or create something new that you can sell ?

Because traditionally less the 5% of the player-base of every MMO uses the game's forum. Most people never get past the launch, so have no idea where to use an in-game mail system when not in the game.
    2. Why have they not fixed problems from over 3 years ago like missions that have your crew drop into a hole and you can't find them?
The problem is there are tons of maps in this game. The issue that might trigger you to fall through a map can be different for different people. And since most bug reports tend to look like: "I was doing the Past Imperfect mission and fell through the map when on the planet." That's not enough information for the QA team to find the exact spot you were standing and exactly what you were doing at the time of the problem. If that's the only info someone is going to file on a bug report they might as well not even bother.
    3. Why do they ignore the customer complaints?
They don't, but that doesn't mean your complaint is more valid then someone else's complaint. You are 1 person out of X hundred thousand.
    4. As a lifer what happend to the rewards programs we were led to believe were going to be implemented?
You mean the Stipend and Vet Rewards?
    5. Why don't they simply take the WHOLE FREAKING SYSTEM down for a week and fix it?
Because people go nuts when the game is down for 1 extra hour of maintenance. For every guy who will just go play something else for a week there's 100 nut jobs who are going to swear the game came down so the NSA could implement software to spy on you. :)
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Sorry, as a Star Trek fan for 40+ years; this kind of comment always makes me laugh as the PRIMARY thing Gene Roddenberry, Desilu Studios, Paramount Pictures, and now CBS were concerned with in regards to 'Star Trek' from the day it premiered in 1966 was:

"How much money will it make us, and will we get a good return on any investment made?"

(And if someone still thinks GR was more concerned with the 'Star Trek message' then making money from his creation; I suggest you read up on the man. The info is out there and easily available.)

In the end, Star Trek isn't a philosophy, or a religion; in the end, it's just designed to be entertainment first and foremost; and something the rights holders hope will be entertaining enough that people will want to buy DVDs, related merchandise, etc.

    1. Why don't they use the in game mail to tell players we know there is a problem and we are working on it?

Answer: Cryptic does communicate, but not via the channels you expect. Via the Forums, Blogs , Facebook, and Twitter. That is how the tell us things. I have not liked how things end up being communicated, but atleast they are telling us when final decisions are made.

    2. Why have they not fixed problems from over 3 years ago like missions that have your crew drop into a hole and you can't find them?

Answer: Online game, espcially MMOs, have an ever growing list of bugs. If all they did was fix bugs we would never see any new content. They have to balance resources, and that means some things might never be fixed. Content from 3 years ago has been mostly ignored by the majority. I know I rarely enjoyed the Deep Space Patrols, or the Deep Space Random Missions. It was the same base space/ground content over and over. With F2P Cryptis has to focus on content that will hopefully bring in revenue. If they don't the game will shut down due to lack of funding.

    3. Why do they ignore the customer complaints?

Answer: They do not ignore them on purpose. When a bug, problem, complaint is issued they note it. When your game has a player base as big as most MMOs that means alot of the same base complaints. I dare you to communicate to each seperate complaint that has a simular underlying theme. You will probably turn from individual communication, to mass form communication, and finally not responding until you have a definate course of action. Yes it is not always the best form of customer service, but focused results require lless personal actions.

    4. As a lifer what happend to the rewards programs we were led to believe were going to be implemented?

Answer: LTS, which I have also, has rewarded anyone that bought into it. It was an investment based purchase at launch. After PWE took over, and F2P happened it changed. LTS is now a pay for rewards system. STO is not so much a time reward game. Also every game that has "exclusives" eventually makes them avaible to more players. If they do not the player base dwindles, and profits dwindle also. Yes I disliked having my earned rewards made trivial by the changes, but I have also gained some rewards that were never included with my original purchase. As for future rewards I hope they do, but understand that every item they give way for free has a cost attached.

    5. Why don't they simply take the WHOLE FREAKING SYSTEM down for a week and fix it?

Answer: Think about the out cries when they have to shut down for emergency patchs. Now think what will happen if they shut down for a week. They would loss the player base to other free games, and probably not recover from it. There will always be unhappy customers, players, and those that just complain with out even playing. If I ever find anything that makes everyone happy I will be amazed. The more people, the more opinions, and the more likely varying degrees of those opinions. You can not make all the people happy all the time. You make due, and try to do better.

Cryptic is trying, and we should try to help them. If you have a solution for any of the problems you find with STO then share it with them. If your not willing to help find a solution, then your only adding to the problems.

All true, but the answer is simple, Cryptic is being controlled by one or more schemers who believe in making as much money as possible by delivering as little as possible.

But hey, what do you expect from someone who quit to go work for Zynga, only to come back as project leader (like a punchline to a bad joke), cue lock boxes, inflated z-store prices, inflated in-game currencies (dilithium for example), and the big fat increase in grind.

Your analogy of STO and the Titanic is correct except for one thing, the captain doesn't have the balls to go down with this ship!

Cryptic does care or LoR would not have been created ... or patches every week to fix (or break), implement (or remove) things every week.

Your topic title is simply inflammatory. That does not mean your concerns are invalid, but man there are other ways to express your frustration and at one end of the spectrum is to log off. The game will be here when you come back ... I think

Making new content does not magically make it impossible to fix bugs. Bugs should always be worked on being fixed and no bugs should last for years.

Look at this situation someone new starts playing the game experiences a lot of bugs and decides not to spend money because of it. Another situation someone who has played the game for a long time gets sick and tired of seeing so many bugs especially ones that last for years and decides that's it I am not spending money on a game that has people who don't care about quality. Things like that happens a lot.

Post the problems you've mentioned or send in a support ticket. People here like to complain but rarely do anything to help cryptic.

My complaints have been addressed, not sure why yours haven't been.

    1. Why don't they use the in game mail to tell players we know there is a problem and we are working on it?

Actually, the bulletin system would be better suited for this... The Mail system would quickly fill their servers, because people don't read them... H*ll, I've seen people who played since launch who didn know they had a mail.

    2. Why have they not fixed problems from over 3 years ago like missions that have your crew drop into a hole and you can't find them?

The particular problem has been adressed to a high degree... however certain maps, especially foundry maps, where the creators can set the spawn point themselves still suffer from this, and is not always the fault of cryptic.

    3. Why do they ignore the customer complaints?

Why not? It's not like they are loosing customers big time because of it.

    4. As a lifer what happend to the rewards programs we were led to believe were going to be implemented?

Oh you mean the Free costumes, Ship, Vice Admiral Tolken, Captains Yacht, Char slots and so on? Yea... wonder where they are... OH RIGHT... we get them the second we log in... This goes for Regular golds too btw... Being LTS dosen't make us special.

    5. Why don't they simply take the WHOLE FREAKING SYSTEM down for a week and fix it?

Have you noticed the number of complaints for just regular mait? A week would be hell... and it's also not a very good solution.

    DOOOM!!! DOOOM!!! DOOOOOOMMMMM!!!!!

I think they will do quite well...

    1. Because they've tried saying that on the forums and just gotten rage back at them for "saying the same thing over"?

    2. Some things just have priority over other things. Plus, if a bug fix doesn't have enough information, they can't help.

    3. They don't ignore bug reports or whatnot. What they do ignore is the whining.

    4. 500 free zen per month, a special ship, fireworks, extra dilithium from some doff mission, extra uniform and ship materials, a special combadge, a monkey pet, just to name things I can think of right now.

    5. That one doesn't even make sense, for more reasons than one. A) People will whine because it's down and they can't play the game they whined to be taken because of bugs. I love the contradiction of that one. B) What good will taking it down for a week do? Somehow having the server offline magically lets the devs fix things? No, they are always working to fix things. Having downtime is to apply it. As said by someone else above, you also can't tell what it effect it will have a live server of thousands of players.

If anything's Titanic, I'm going to place my bet on SWTOR... which is why I'm dumbfounded by the people that threaten to hop on it.

    CBS is always an 'excuse'.
Both Cryptic and CBS want to make money. Why should that be such a surprise?

You think CBS keeps repackaging all those Trek DVD sets into different grouping every year for free? You think CBS publishes all those novels each year for free? You think CBS licenses Trek bed sheets and coloring books and models and pajamas and toys and other games for free?

Gene might have pretended to be a socialist but he was a Grade A capitalist. CBS is a capitalist. Cryptic is a capitalist. You are a capitalist. The company you work for is a capitalist. Virtually everyone in the world wants to make as much money has they can. Why does that surprise you?

Yep - gotta love it (part of the merchandise description from the above link:
    To Boldly Blow...

In the search for ever-lighter materials with which to build spacecraft, we believe that Starfleet's engineers glossed over the perfect solution: inflatables. After all, spaceships are designed to keep air for life support in and the vacuum of space out. Inflatables are designed to keep air in. Makes sense, right?

Yep, compared to this, the work Cryptic/PWE is doing in STO really appears sub par.:D;)

fan boys are all the same.. cryptic could take a dump in a bag and mail it to them, and they would praise cryptic/pwe for thinking about them...

in real life, there are other games, this game is not even coming close to standing in the same room as all the other top games.. i have fallowed and been involved with this game since i saw the perpetual announcement at the convention..

then cryptic got it. and i knew we were introuble, since marvel had pulled their license for the marvel universe.. but, i gave them a chance, and while at first they had some minor things that were bugging me, it was a good game.. but the quality of this game and its content has taken a nose dive.. sure, its pretty, but im pretty sure a six year old wrote the newer story lines..

and, whats weirder, is i actually like never winter.. said id never play it, but decided to give it a try, and boom, my faith in cryptic as a company is rising, but my faith in the sto branch is falling (very fast at that). today, is just another brick in the wall of sto fails, and will extend the amount of time i stay out of sto..

further more, bringing up bugs from three years ago that are "STILL NOT FIXED" is not kicking a dead horse, that is holding cryptic acountable for their poor maintnance of the game.. i guess your willing to let cryptic just brush all the bad under the rug and continue finding new ways to break the game..
