I'd love this for the KDF faction and the Romulans. Some option instead of the diplomacy mode to move your ship in orbit and initiate planetary bombardment to soften the planet's defenses up, with your ship visually firing all weapons at the planet. (perhaps a casualty counter filling?) And when that is done you'd be able to engage planetary assault, with your ship launching shuttles at the planet to claim it for the Klingon Empire/ Romulans.:)
While this sounds cool, it doesn't really have any use in the game at the moment. The only use I could possibly see would be in the "exploration" system which is in drastic need of a major overhaul anyway.

Yes exactly, that's what I meant with "diplomacy mode". Instead of giving commodities to whining aliens, klingons/romulans should get the option to conquer the planet instead

I want that for my mirror Prometheus as well then.
It's not like the story doesn't already have us Feds acting like the Terrans anyway. :V
I'd love something like that for the exploration mode. It'd be great if they somehow expand this mode to a roguelike adventure experience at one point with all sorts of randomly generated missions.
Think about it, I for example still love to play the original XCOM: UFO defense. Why? Random maps, different outcomes, the game literally never gets old. If something like this would be incorporated in STO it would do it's name a bit more justice and keep players well... playing

Don't we alrdy have that? The engineers have Orbital Bombardment.
Maybe we need a cutaway showing it during an explore mish.
Maybe I am just misunderstanding the OP.

He means bombarding a planet from a space map.
