Idea: Weapon Hardpoints

kiloacekiloace Member Posts: 488 Arc User
I'll make this brief. I recently set up my D'deridex as a cannon boat (single cannons) and figured it would look really cool firing a ton of plasma 'bullets' from all areas of the ship (sort of like a star destroyer has mounted gun turrets if that makes sense). I was kinda sad to see all of them fire from 1 single spot on the ship.

So my question is, how would you feel about assigning hardpoints to your weapons? The weapon slots wouldn't change at all, you'd just have a seperate menu in your ship status screen where you are given a select handful of areas on your ship from which your weapon can fire.

As long as the firing arcs do not interfere with the hard point locations (i.e. beams bound to a point on top of your ship firing through your ship to the enemy below) and current gameplay mechanics were left unchanged, would you be interested in a feature like this?

    oddy has the same problem...
i onetime was yelled at by some dude that thought i only had one weapon equipped, because only one weapon hardpoint was visible...

while at it, DBB should fire from one single spot, with 2 narrow beams imho...

    Yes a thousand times.

I think some of the coding for this would alredy be done, since different weapons already have different hard points. I know of some ships when firing torpedo spread the torpedos seem to come from two different "tubes." They just need to add more animations and such.

That would be cool. CO has this so I don't see why not here. They have a drop down menu where you can choose the emanation points for your powers such as hands, head, chest, etc. It's the same engine so it's possible.

Sound's like you want what they did in starfleet command 3's ship editor.

I would definitely be on board for allowing players to choose their starship's hardpoint distribution. Especially since this kind of tech is already possible with the Cryptic Engine, going by the emanation point system in Champions Online.

I would *LOVE* to rearrange where the weapons emit from on my Mogai and my Temporal destroyer. I think this would be an excellent addition!

This idea seems to have really caught hold for the community :D

I'm just gonna nonchalantly bump this back to the front page, and maybe, if we can get enough positive reactions, we can get noticed.

The dread already has the cannon/dbb hardpoint in the top center saucer so I know they can do it, just need to go back and add to all the ships. Turret hardpoints would be way cool.

This forum has blown up with all the content additions lately. :(

Anyway, this should bump it back up again. I was flying my Mirror Prometheus today, lazily firing diagonally at a nanite transformer, and all the bolts were coming out of one red source point on my hull. Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to duplicate those points and place them elsewhere on your ship?

    Here's what I'm thinking:

(I wish I could get pictures) 5 types of hardpoint - S. Cannon (Red dot beacon thingy), S. Beam (Array), Dual Beam (slotted, like on the thumbnail), Dual Cannon (Also for Heavies), Torpedoes. Mines don't really need them. They just sorta 'appear'.

    > For the Dual Beams and Cannons, the visual hardpoint will be similar to the single cannon/turret one, HOWEVER! It will be mirrored one the ship (i.e. if you place one on the dorsal, left-middle section of the Prometheus saucer, it will also appear in the same geometric location on the right side of the hull, for consistence in firing animation.

    > Individual hardpoints will have their own arc 'windows.' These will not affect normal weapon arcs, but they will ensure a reduction in clipping problems for firing animations. for example, if your ship is firing at a target below you and slightly to the left, your top/right hardpoint will not be used in the animation (as doing so would cause clipping problems). This also brings up another point:

    > If you neglect to place hardpoints on a side or facing of your ship that makes it impossible for your weapon to 'fire' at an enemy relative to your ship's position, the computer will generate random points for default. This means that if you forget to put hardpoints on your ship's ventral side, the editor will create some random ones for you so you can still fire weapons.

This hardpoint editor will become a subsection in the ship costume editor under "advanced" or something.

    How about that? :D

Yes. Absolutely yes. Some hardpoints are dumb. Some ships have spots that would look really awesome if they were used as hardpoints. Quads on MVAM nacelles, awyea.

It'd also appease the people who want all D'Deridex hardpoints to fire out of the deflector.

On the large ships with poor mobility especially. Making it seem like a battlecruiser/carrier platform with individual gun turrets placed around the ships....that'd be sweet.

Yeah, those really should look like they're bristling with weaponry. A massive cannon broadside from a cruiser would look impressive!
