personally I keep some lower tier ships for sentimental reasons (for example I occasionally swap to my Original science ship and hang around in exploration areas)
some things don't need fire power (scanning for traces for example)
it is of course extremely bad manners to take them into a pug
BUT a team mission in t2 ships can be interesting (by the way its possible to complete cure normal in a t2 science ship team it just takes a VERY long time and you won't get the optional)
Have you taken a Tier 1 ship into a lvl 50 STF. I have, you get one shotted everytime. Not a good idea.
Unless they allow you to upgrade your ship to higher specs at a discount your only option is to get rid of the ships to make room for the nice shiny ones sooner or later you will obtain.
Sad but true.
Monkey see, Monkey do. Monkey flings Feathered Monkey poo...
If the whole ship tier system doesn't get an overhaul which would allow you to upgrade your ships to endgame standard (which would allow us to see more than the default 3 ships in endgame content) lower tier vessels have no reson to exist except for the refit versions which come with a console.
Leveling in STO is very fast paced, unrewarding and boring. They could easily just scrap lower tiers and let everyone start at 50 (or remove levels alltogether) since nothing before T5 is of any value.

I've had a few not completely thought through ideas about what Cryptic could do with all of those "spare" ships regardless of there tier.
First off, increase the total number of boffs you can have but have boffs assigned to specific ships. That way each ship can have it's own powers\abilities set up independently, so if you change ships everything is ready to go without having to mess around setting up the right boffs, power trays etc.
At lvl 50 everyone is an Admiral (or eqivalent) and those spare ships are your personal fleet so why not order them to do something? A sort of ship-doffing system, you assign ships to various sectors to perform missions the success is based on how "good" the ships boffs are (based on rarity & skill levels) and how "good" the ship is (based on tier, class & equipment). So sending a Miranda out with no shields or weapons and all white boffs to patrol for True Way ships isn't going to end well, but the same ship transporting Stem Bolts between Earth and Risa will probably manage it.
Also if the ships are assigned to specific sectors they could then give you remote access to doff missions in those sectors but maybe not the personal or DH missions for those remote sectors.
I would love to see them work out a system that allows you to tag any ship for the Fleet Support ability. When you activate it, it will warp in the ships you tagged. These ships would ignore any special equipment you have on it and will work like the current fleet support ships.
What are we suppose to do with lower tier ships? These are ships T3 and lower.I still have mine on all chars.
It would be nice to have an erea where you can use them or an easy play mode other than normal.
Why easy mode.. i use my heavy escort in Elite STF with no problems. In fact the only T5 ships i fly are my Breen, Intrepid retro, Galaxy Dreadnought and Breen.
My Akira, intrepid, Defiant and T3 ambassador still see action on regular basis and perform flawlessly.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
i only keep the TOS conny, i didn't even bother to keep the starter ship
the other t1-t4 ships from the c-store i claim once per character, take the console out and dismiss them right after that.
right now i only keep T5 ships with 10 cosnole slots...all the other 9 console variants i emtyed out and dismissed too.
personally i see no reason other than sentimental issues to keep inferior ships, they surve no perpose.
maybe something similar like starfleet command or starfleet legacy where you did actually command a small fleet (3 ships or so)
before missions you choose the ship you wanted to use, the other 2 act as your permanent "companions" like in ground combat.
could be an idea, choosing your ship before combat, already set up and ready to go...one for dmg, one for tanking/healing and one for croud control.
would also explain or give meaning to your rank, admiral...
No seriously, as of yet there is no need for lower tier ships, although in my fleet we occasionally do low tier ship PvP with all white gear.
There is also unsubstantiated rumor that the next big thing coming is Boff ships.
...with regard to the Boff Ships part....I've heard that too: the line of progression I've heard/read/hypothesized is Cryptic raises the level cap, player characters go to full Admiral, and then promote Boffs to Captains, and they perform assignments.....to get back on track.....I don't discharge 'em just because I know as soon as I do, Cryptic will release something that requires them, so here I sit like a hoarder......
With the exception of the very first ship you get, I've discharged all of mine. I won't be flying them again so why not make room for bigger and better ships?

Totally agree that would be pretty sweet.

I want the rumored bridge officers in command of your spare ships to be true. I would definitely think that the ships and bridge officers you assign to them would allow all those powers and gear put on the ships. While they could be used as fleet support I'd rather see them appear while running missions like how the Enterprise F shows up when running Romulan dailies. There could be watered down versions of endgame content that can be soloed with a number of your bridge officer ships in tow, give lesser rewards, say a quarter of the number of marks but a way to open up traits on bridge officers that are put in command of other ships that only activates when in command of a ship.

Why so we can use these ships go try the first mission saving in T1 ship.
I use my T4 and 5 in normal or elite stfs.I ma fan of the 23rd Century Star Trek Kirks era and I know others are to.
I would get rid of tiers and vring in class system the more MKX gear on that ship would increase its class.

They make great storage for ship equipment freeing space in your bank. Thats about all they are good for. If they come out with an upgrade feature then all those ships will have considerable value. But then events for using ships that are equiped for certain levels would add value as well by giving you a reason to keep the ship as it was equipped when you level past it. Last thing is the boff fleet i keep seeing mentioned as another way to add value.

Some I keep around because I'm thinking of getting the C-Store or Fleet version and I like to check out different customization options. That's why I've still got my T4 Defiant, for instance. Some I keep because I really like the look, but don't want or have access to the shipyard/credits for the fleet version, which is why I still have my T2 Saber and Nova.
I do delete my T1 and most of my earlier ships now, though.

That t4 Defiant is still usefull even in STFs.
I really like the look of the classic cruisers and would like to use them now and then.

I once made the "strange new worlds" daily with my T2 Constitution Refit (MK XI+ equip). The random space battle against a few True Way ships took longer than with a T5 ship of course but was doable and fun
