I was talking with a friend today and we both came to the conclusion that the reason they think their ship is underpowered is because they over generalise. I find to be the best at something you need to find what specific thing you want to do, healing, tanking, crowd control etc and then concentrate on making that one thing to be the best you can make it.
My Nebula Retrofit is being turned into a Gravity well generator for crowd control. I have purple gravimetric scientist and deflector doffs. Purple XII gravimetric console, flow cap, particle generator. Gravwell 3 and 1 boff. Full flow cap/ graviton generator skills. Working on upgrading my XI omega to XII omega set which is a nice set.
My nebula is a flying singualrity generator. If i tried to generalise I woulnt get anywhere.
And that is where many players go wrong and complain they are not powerful enough because they expect to do it all. And well.

I agree. A lot of people think that they can make their ship into the next Voyager, where you can battle, tank, heal, and open portals to Fluidic Space.
But that is the fault of the writers. Realistically, there is no vehicle that can do everything.

The Vesta can technically do a lot of different things, but not simultaneously.

In my experience the only abilities you need to specialize for are science. Sadly science abilities have been repeatedly nerfed so many times that without a dedicated investment and build they arn't worth your time.
When it comes to DPS you can easily pull off 6k DPS without any weapon specialization skills at all and using no captain abilities.
As for tanking, one doesn't really specialize for tanking as much as one simply takes engineering skills as standard regardless of role.
The good thing too that people dont understand about specialising in sci skills is that Purple XII sci consoles are cheap as chips. If people knew what they were doing the concole costs would be a lot higher!
Any one can pew. Anyone can sit and take it with the right guns and the right armour. However to become the Wizards of the game you need training and special skills.
Its not easy being Merlin or Gandalf!

'Do not try the patience of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger...!' :P
Wizards should be sensible, wise men with lots and lots of patience, and perfectly aware that magic should only be used when strictly essential. :P
Now, on a more serious note. I like this game very much, but it's mechanics don't reward specialization all that much. Of course that specialization will produce better/best results, but you can go jack-of-all-trades with good results as well.
For PVE you can get away with anything, believe me I know, I am still running the same mis-placed skillpoints I tossed around at random a year ago
I went through many abilities and builds and sets and combinations of them since then and what I learned is, unless I actively try to make the worst possible I can think of eSTF remains a walk in the park.
But yeah you'd have to be out of your mind to play a cruiser in this game, at least with carriers you can afk grind.

I disagree with the cruiser thing. I have a fleet Nomad and its an awesome support ship. My fire at will and torp spread is useful. I can hold my own. Im not looking to break stf completion speed records. As long as the job is done. The Nomad is a Warp plasma build with healing. I can pew too with 6 fleet polaron beams and fore and aft xii purple quantums.
I agree with carriers. My third fed toon has a Jem Hadar Dreadnaught. Its a great ship. My build is around making the most of my pets and supporting them.
