Future of STO

liquidinkliquidink Member Posts: 19 Arc User
Last FAQ Cryptic mentioned that they would be looking to the community for where to go next. So naturally, I thought I'd put my own theories out there. Get ready for a lot of reading.

Future Factions

Playable Factions

Not an immediate goal, but something to look forward to in the future. The immediate major factions to add like they did the Romulan Republic:

  • Cardassian Union - As in the government, not the True Way Alliance. Their story would largely involve them fighting the True Way and the New Dominion, but could also involve the Mirror Universe.
  • Renegade Borg - Like Hugh's Borg or the Unimatrix Zero Resistance. Would be very Borg heavy, but could open up more plot involving the Iconians. As for their official name, I suggest 'the Borg Consortium.'

Minor Playable Factions

For those factions that don't really fit the criteria of being a major faction (being able to play all of the Feature Episodes I think was one) playable factions with a lesser amount of levels and more focus on player to player interaction could be added as compensation for those who really wanted to play as them. Maybe purchasable off the C-Store, hopefully for a reasonable price. With this, we could have:

  • Romulan Star Empire/Tal Shiar
  • True Way Alliance/New Dominion
  • Breen Confederacy
  • The Dominion
  • Tholian Assembly
  • Hirogen
  • Terran Empire

NPC Factions

We need more.

  • Tamarian Republic - Could be involved with the Cardassian Union.
  • First Federation - I really don't know what could be done with these guys, but there are people who want them in the game.
  • Xindi - Adding them would make people very happy.

Existing Factions

Federation

The Federation is pretty much overflowing with content compared the Klingons and the Romulans, so I don't have many ideas for them.

Klingon Empire

More ships, including some of Lethean and Ferasan origin.

More costume options, including unique Nausicaan, Lethean and Ferasan clothing options. I know many would like the species-unique clothes desegregated, because they want Klingons, Trill and Ferasan to have the Orion bikinis... all I can suggest is to make this a C-Store offer. Personally, I just want to scare people with a bare-chested Nausicaan.

More missions involving the war with the Federation. Also Deep Space Encounters against the Federation.

A reasonable explanation to why there are Joined Trill serving in the KDF.

Romulan Republic

Serious toning down of the alliance system. It was a great idea (I'm going to get lynched for saying that) but it was taken too far. NPCs should not be referring to my Romulan as Starfleet, I should be able to team with other Romulans regardless of who they allied with, I should have an easier time getting Romulan DOFFs, and my conference room the Deferi are invited too should be of Romulan architecture. The Republic should be Starfleet/KDF's ally, not vassal.

Maybe some more ships and clothing options.

As more species become available for the Republic, the Remans should become free.

A way to remove Tovan Khev. Maybe reduce him to purple quality immortal DOFF? That way, he'll still be there for missions he's important too, but will please those who wish to have him taken out and shot.

Species

Existing Species

Ferasan and Letheans should have their own faction symbol like the Nausicaans, Orions and Gorn.

Nausicaan and Lethean females should become playable.

Suliban and Joined Trill (maybe Yridians as well) should be made playable for the Romulan Republic, on the C-Store replacing the Remans, which become free.

Female Reman NPCs need to variate more between the three head styles.

Reman skin below the neck needs to be altered to match the skin on Reman heads.

Future Species

If a Delta Quadrant expansion becomes a reality, Ocampa, Talaxians should be added to the Federation. Kazon can be added to the Klingon Empire. The Viidians may be able to fit into the Romulan Republic.

More of the obscure Federation races, like the Gazerites.

I will add more suggestions as posts in this thread at later times.

Something new at end game, like an entirely new system of revamped STFs for the Borg or missions at 50 that are new and exciting. Honestly the end game in STO is abysmal and just becomes a boring grindfest. Wouldn't mind seeing them bump the level cap to 55 or 60 to give everyone some new things to do once they hit Vice Admiral.

As we have a Toon creator where we can choose body typr hair color, outfits, ect. STO needs in the future a craftable Starship creator.

Choose the Primary Hull, the Nacelles, the Saucer type, etc.
then via a crafting system build up the Boff seating and Console slots, turn rate, hull points, etc. Until you have a tier 5 fleet ship equivalent. But it is a ship "you" built and designed from scratch.

Cryptic would have to have some limiitation on just how many hull points could be maxed and how high a turn-rate could be. It would have to be based on the equipment used in the ship construction. Just like older games like "armor core" on Ps2 where you build your own Mech's from scratch and there was prerequisites that needed to be met when selecting certian parts, the same would be needed here to prevent OP ships. But I think with the type of players we have they would love to have a Drydock available in the game, Unlockable via the Fleet Rep system. And as you level it up, new items or level of items become craftable. Imagine a game where no 2 ships are the same.

No, no, no. Not more fleet exclusive grind content. What about more content for everyone?

The Cardassians can only work as a subset of the Federation. The current alliance system wouldn't work because the Cardassians are a protectorate state of the Federation. There is no way the Federation would allow the Klingons to court the Cardies, especially since the Feds are in a state of war with them. Also, the Cardies have only 3 canon designs for ships, but that opens things up for the devs to get creative.

I think the Feds are due for a Featured Series. One that leans towards science, exploration and diplomacy and way less shooting. The Feds are the life blood of the game and Star Trek in general after all.

The Klingons have a few ways to go which could be fun. I know there are people waiting for the Gorn Rebellion to happen. A Klingon Civil War could also be fun. Something with the Orion Syndicate is also a possibility.

The alliance system is the only thing keeping the New Romulan Republic alive. Mostly because both real powers are too busy to bother with it. Both sides are just humoring it so that down the road sometime they might be able to use them.

No Delta Quadrant things! We have plenty in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Plus there is no established way (that I know of) to get from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant. Also, Ocampa canonly are a dead end race. Single births and only that single birth means the species is dead. (I know there are books that attempt to make the Ocampa less stupid of a race but those are not canon).

Also, who in their right minds wants the Kazon? Find me a KDF who wants them to join their team.

Otherwise I like the rest of your ideas.
Cheers from Antonio Valerio Cortez III, Half-Celestial Archduke of the Free Marches Confederacy.

If your idea for a new fRaction in STO does not fit into the Friends-of-Federation or Friends-of KDF then there's probably a 99.9% chance it won't be added.

If your idea for a new fRaction in STO fits into the Friends-of-Federation or Friends-of KDF then there's probably a 99.9% chance it will be added to the game. I'm thinking Cardassians here.

There are already playable Liberated Borg in game so we don't need a whole fRaction devoted to some ship-less, homeworld-less, starbase-less drones.

p.s. the reason I use "fRaction" is to indicate the intentional spelling of the word and as it relates to less than a "whole" "faction".

    I really like that idea.

More than anything, I wish the devs would just spend some time working on technical issues before pushing into another season/faction/quadrant.

I'd also like to see star ship projects, kind of like starbase/embassy/dilithium mine projects, but for your ship. For the sake of balance, the projects could be purely aesthetic, like ship interiors or bridges. For example, you could do a project to make your interior Borgish to go along with your Borg consoles.

Sorry it took so long to update this.

    Increased customisation of ship interiors!

Being able to customise your crew; giving them a common uniform (perhaps species specific when it comes to the Klingons) and being able to exclude certain species (or genders if that's your thing) from your crew, like if you want to RP as a Gorn rebel and only have Gorn crew.

More bridge and interior options, especially for the Klingons and Romulans. The Romulans should have the progressively larger bridges that the Feds and Klingons have, and also one with subdued lighting (even more than they already have) for Remans. The Klingons need some species specific interiors, for cases like a mentioned above if someone wanted to RP as a Gorn rebel.

The bridge officers places on the bridge should also be customisable. I don't like how I have eight bridge officers but can only find four and a large bunch of generic rabble.

And your duty officers should be found wandering the interior. For those who grow attached to them, like me.

The Iconian portal on New Romulus could suffice. It would also open up an opportunity to introduce more Iconian plot.

Their are already Tholian,Breen,Cardassian,Ferengi and Dominion ships out their being used so their should be no factions for them. Same goes for any species that are part of a faction already.

    Hirogen
    Kazon
    Vidian
    Xindi
    Krenim
    Son'a

Those are a few examples of ones that have no ships. Hirogen are the ones that I would like the most.

The Hirogen are mostly nomadic, and the ones that are in the game seems to be somewhat on the side of the Tal Shiar, as they showed their support for Sela. I don't think the Hirogen would work as a faction.

Kazon: When last we saw them, they ware as nomadic as the Hirogen.

Vidiian: It would be nice if we got some closure with them on the whole Phage epidemic they had going.

Xindi: More than likely, we will get a focus on them as we move farther into the sectors of the alpha quadrant yet to be added. If they do add all five species, that would pave the way for them to possibly introduce non-humanoid character creation.

Krenim: I think their arc has pretty much ended, and there's not much more that can happen.

Son'a: Not sure what they can do with them, seeing as some have returned to the Ba'ku homeworld.

If a Blue/Red/Green system is impossible for whatever reason, then I whole heartedly agree with more unity for Fed/KDF allied Roms.

Romulan citadel and Reman 'basement' only for RRF (That bit behind the embassy/command). Not sure what would go there.

I'd like to see a New Cardassia with all it's own stuff. Not allied, but a new whole faction. Lakarian City?

Boffs/Playable RRF Acamarians, Suliban and Yridians waaaay before any Delta or Gamma quadrant stuff shows up in game. Hirogen at a push.

    PvP balance before anything else.

So many cool gadgets and gizmos for the C and Z stores make for great customization, and in PvE it really doesn't matter that Team Member 2 is loaded with the best and most glitched gear because he is helping everyone in his match. However, in PvP, all players need to start on a more-or-less equal footing.

So, find the well known and well publicized issues regarding PvP, tweak the OP stuff down and the UP stuff up. Make Science Career a viable choice and Science Ships a welcome addition to any team intending to PvP.

All the grind, STF's, and Marks exist for only one purpose: to fuel the PvP end game. Face it, aside from Foundry, there is no end game for STO other than PvP, and to make it an attractive end game it needs to be seen as balanced and fair.

Once all the consoles and powers are balanced and performing as intended, separate the PvP queues so that level 50 guys with Mk XI blue gear don't have to face level 50 guys with Mk XII light purple gear. When a new entrant to PvP has a chance to survive long enough to learn how to PvP, the desire to PvP will grow. Even players who have previously avoided it like the plague would have a chance, and given a chance might like to join in the fun.

This is not high on my agenda, but more hair options for every non alien generated species.

More and better end game content

More Fed like missions; dissencion making, dissabling beams, more diplotic in thought, even if not reflected by the end result of the mission.

But make them tough! And brain stimulating! :)
Hopefully I'll come back from my break; this break is fun; I play intellectual games.

    I hope STO get's better ...

    STO2.

That means whole new game. Seamless transition between sector space and ship space. Commanding the ship from the helm. Collision based combat system. Multiplayer ship command. Random system generator. Possibility of major loss, no ship respawning.
Space. Huge space, no loading maps. None at all. Faction based realm combat. Random encounters. Cinematic graphics. You get the picture.

While I cannot see me getting into another faction I would like to see an expansion of ship uses in STO.

A trading system allowing me to buy and sell commodities through the galaxy making use of my ships cavernous cargo hold which I am so far unable to use at all. Obviously this would be better for cruisers and possibly Tuffli freighters than it would be for escorts and shuttles due to the ship size and corresponding hold sizes.

This could even be tied into our DOFF system as we use our DOFFs to find the best port of call to drop our goods off at.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles

What i want to see is the start of the Iconian war..... Enough of this "tee hee, the iconians are manipulating things" i want to see the Iconians invade and the REAL war begin....

Obviously the war would have some normal episodes to progress the storyline. some STF type missions for the obvious "iconian rep" needed. The war storyline could even be spread over many seasons, ranging from the initial invasion, to the formation of a galactic alliance (involving powers from the gamma and delta quadrants), to the ultimate final stages of the war.

    - A Fed storyline where mission success does not rely upon shooting up everyone/everything in sight.

    - More exploration missions for everyone. With additional map areas which open up whenever a player completes enough of them.

    - What, exactly, is on the far side of the Klingon Empire?

    - A revamp of the crafting system which adds in another level, that of Master Craftsman, and allows players to craft nearly anything already available in the game.

    - Fleet vs. Fleet actions. Where one Fleet can directly challenge another. With benefits accruing to the victorious side.

    - Commanding a task force which has ships Captained by former Bridge Officers of mine.

    - Episodes where the Iconians are faced directly and head on. Instead of being forced to counter the machinations of their patsies, errr...proxies.

    - STFs against someone, anyone, other than the Borg. And the Tholians.

    - Removal of the Leaver Penalty from all STFs and Fleet Actions. Because only AFKer's benefit from the current system and I don't want to have a Prom Queen Contest right in the middle of Hive:Onslaught.

    - Oh yeah, almost forgot the most important one: Tovan Kev Must Die!
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.

Should be 9 playable factions PER EACH 3 separate eras/servers:

    STO: TOS

    STO: TNG

    STO: 2409

they've got tribble and redshirt servers, why not add a few more? the money is there for sure

factions included but not specific to the TNG server are: federations, Klingon, romulan, cardassian, ferengi, jem'hadar, borg, etc..

Please note for every STO 'era' server there are new different playable species. The profit potential is nearly limitless..

Starfleet and Klingons shouldn't be kings of the galaxy. Bad idea from the start, glad it comes back biting them in the TRIBBLE so many times they actually admit we're right, change everything about the war, and go back to our lives! Klingon vs. fed only works if they're the only 2 powers in the game..
Lyndon Brewer: 20% chance to capture enemy ship for 60 seconds on successful use of boarding party.

More Reman related content, I don't like the fact that my Reman character is referred to as a Romulan ;).
Allowing Romulan/Reman characters to go in a Reman section of the New Romulas embassy would be nice :).

And yeah I don't like that Republic characters are referred to as Federation or KDF.

But tbh bug fixing is THE top priority at this time, the game needs a complete bug overhaul before new ones appear with the arrival of new content :P.

But we all know that's a lot to ask for... :(

agreed. ship interiors should change along whit how you outfit your ship.

Main engineering should visually display the type of warp core you use, your impulse engine and have a visual representation the consoles used in your engineering slots.

deflector control should be added. then have sickbay and the science labs moved there. around here you would see visual representations of the consoles slotted in your science slots and the deflector changes to the type used by the ship. this would also house the visual representation of the shield generator.

an armory would need to be added. (the NX class seemed to have one) this would house the torpedo tubes and display the slotted weapons. a stack of torpedo's or a diagnostic controls for beam banks and cannons. ofcourse you would see visual representations of the consoles slotted in your tactical slots. you could dress this up whit EV suits hanging on a rack ground weapons on a workbench etc.

last but not least add a hangar close to the transporter. i expect a couple of control-boots the hangars upper floor on a corridor that ends at the transporter room from the control-boots there are stairs down to reach the small crafts. Here you would see your readied small craft. interacting whit a console next to it will allow you to board it. (much better than having a officer on guard at the transporter to direct you to it) also if you are on a carrier to the left and right there would be representations of whatever you slotted in your hangar. (one or both sides would be empty if you don't/can't slot anything in your hangar; an Atrox carrier could be filled on both sides, a Vesta at only one side and a Defiant would remain empty at both sides)

also a bit of going up and down would be nice to see. the upper floors would house the bar(front) and captains quarters (central to port or starboard). on the middle floor the would be armory(front) and hangar (back). the lower floor would house deflector control/sickbay/science labs (front) and main engineering (dead center) since it has stairs it may link up to the middle floor. since i imagine the hangar to be tall the lower floor can have an entry to it.

if the foundry wouldn't have been so restrictive i would by now have finished(perfected) one (ore more) design(s) as (an) example(s). a ready made floor-plan for cryptic to adapt to an actual functional ship interior.
THE NEW CRAFTING SYSTEM IS TERRA-BAD
First of all it's not even a crafting system! It's just a dumb game system that's nothing more than a glorified slots machine.
second the "special items" you hope will be the saving the saving grace are messed up to.

I think the thing that Cryptic needs to prioritize is the entire reworking of the core game engine. The gear and ships are reaching a point to where they can't expand it anymore without terribly breaking something. Power is more or less maxed out. BOff stations are already being taxed with everything one could possibly want without running into the cooldown too much. Gear can improve, but I'm sure Cryptic would like to sell more ships. They need to work the game toward the possibility of having another level cap increase to add some new life into the game. I think with the current design that's not really possible.

I don't mind having a new photonic faction. It would probably be relatively easy to integrate since the tech already exists. The advantages would be that just about any race appearance and or ship skin can be incorporated, so customization would be virtually wide-open. The storyline can be based on a photonic revolt similar to the VOY episode. The main protagonist/antagonist can be Voyager's EMH Doc (Or evil Doc).
