Watch the originals, William Hartnel, Partick Thourton(sp?), John Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davidosn, Colin Baker and Sylvester Mcoy. Although they aren't nearly as good (In terms of production values), the villains are villains and they at least get away from Earth and the human race from time-to-time.

    Seen Dr Who

For me ... honestly ? For the time, Star Trek is far more entertaining. I also love the characters sets, stories and realism (to an extent) all of which I cannot see in Dr Who.

Chris and David were awesome, then whoever came to write Matt needs to be fed to the same film wolfs as JJ abrams. Chris and Davids writers were good, and Dr Who , at that quality, (A kind of re-boot) is something that needs to happen to STAR TREK right NOW.
Hopefully I'll come back from my break; this break is fun; I play intellectual games.

    I hope STO get's better ...

If you meant is there a story behind the changing of the Doctors, yes there is, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you if you haven't seen it before ;)

I'm curious about it, but there are so many different Doctor Whos, that I don't really know where to start.

Can someone recommend a good place to start via netflix instant video?

My Doctor Who crazy friend recommended starting from the reboot, which I believe is Season 9. A guy named Christopher Eccleston will be the Doctor for that season.

Slog through that one season, and you'll start to enjoy the rest from that point on.

I'm a recent Doctor Who fan too! In my typical fashion I loaded my netflix online account and watched it from the first episode of the NuWho right through to the end which was the last season. I couldn't watch the new episodes because I work when their on but as soon as it came out on blu-ray I was at the store and bought it, watched the last season in 2 days! Anxiously awaiting November for the 50th Anniversary episode to air.

You are in for a big treat, Doctor Who is pretty amazing! But yeah, like others have said.. "Don't Blink!" As for episodes, one of my favorites is "Turn Left", but I'm a big fan of what if stories and that's what it is.

I want to watch the classic Who but netflix doesn't have it. Can anyone recommend a good way to do so? I'd love to watch them before the 50th in November.

I would say from the beginning, but I don't think the really old ones will be on Netflix. A lot of the VERY OLD episodes that aired don't exits any more in any format because the BBC didn't keep them :( . So if you want to start from the very beginning you wont have much to watch from the first few Doctors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_missing_episodes

If you're in the UK, or have a dvd player that can play uk dvd's, most of them have been released on dvd. Granted there are some missing episodes that have been wiped, but some episodes have had their audios recovered by some fans who recorded it way back in the day and the missing episodes are being released with new animation done to synch with the audio.

But at least the very first 3 stories (about 5-8 25minute episodes per story) are available if you want to see how it all began on 23rd november 1963 (which I only mention because the 50th episode is airing on 23rd November 2013). They are included in a boxset called the beginning. And includes the first ever dalek episode.

They have some decent extra features on them as well.

I'm interested in starting with the show, but have no idea where to start. Are there multiple series like in Star Trek? What should I watch first?

A single series, with 'transitions'... (although, Torchwood was a spinoff for a little while)

Best to just watch it chronologically, as following the timeline is already hard enough sometimes, why make it harder by doing the series out of order too :D

Oh, and if you want to throw Torchwood into the mix, watch that chronologically mixed in with Dr Who, as there are a couple spots where they kinda sync up.

Yes. The real world story is that the first actor William Hartnell needed to leave the show, so they had to come up with a clever way to transition to another lead. If you don't mind the spoiler, highlight the black below:

The Doctor is a Time Lord from planet Gallifrey. Their kind have been granted the ability to regenerate, usually on the verge of death. For most, like the Doctor, the regeneration is barely controlled and results in a new form and personality, though the core character remains intact.
i'm surprised no one's mentioned peter cushing in Dalek invasion earth, the 60's-70's big screen version(can't remember the exact yr it came out).

Probably because there were some fundamental changes to that storyline, especially pertaining to The Doctor.

I like the second doctor a lot. Mostly his particular style. If you are into watching old black and white tv you check out his episodes.

Man...what is up with the new Doctor. Why does he shout incessantly? Why does he ramble? Why isn't River Song here? Why do all these twits hump the Doctors leg and beg to make him fish bowel soup? WHY?
Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it. - Bubba

There's a lot of episodes of DW on Netflix, both old and new.

But of the classic episodes, they seem...sporadic. Like, there aren't a whole lot (there isn't even the first episode of the series 'An Unearthly Child'). Most of the new series episodes are there, but as for the old ones, they seem kind of hit and miss.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

I first saw Doctor Who on german TV a long time ago, it was Doctor 7. I was quite young then and I remember being scared witless by one episode that had some sort of vampires in it ! Who would have known bakc then that Vampire: The Masquerade would become my alltime favorite roleplaying setting. :D

I really started to watch Doctor Who starting with the 2005 reboot and it took off for me with Doctor 10. Since then I can't wait for new episodes. I did watch the Sarah Jane Mysteries and Torchwood too. Torchwood is quite nasty, and the Mysteries were fun. (Since the actress who played Sarah Jane Smith died, there won't be anymore of this show I presume).

I'm still trying to figure out if I want to get into the older Doctor Who stuff though. But I recently discovered that I can't bear to watch TOS anymore, so I probably won't enjoy Doctor Who in black and white from the 60's.

    :)

I kinda thought that too, but I've been on an old show kick and found some of them that I quite enjoyed.

If you want to watch from the classic series start from Spearhead form space, Episode one of the Third Doctor, the first in colour, and from that point on all episodes exist.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.
