Long before the Reputation system I have wondered why the Devs bothered giving out MK X equipment for completing End-Game tasks. Now that the Rep System is in place and is ONLY accessible at lvl 50 the question has come back in full force.
Why do we even bother having MK X gear in the Reputation system? At lvl 50 we should be using MK XI at bare minimum and eventually MK XII. So why bother having us deal with the MK X things? They are already out-dated by the time we can acquire them.
Because the jump from random blues and purples to set Mk Xs is still a huge leap in capability, especially given how relatively inexpensive mk Xs are to acquire from the rep system. Additionally, the difference between Mk X and Mk XII is not that large.
Smart players will get their Mk X sets, then save up until Tier 5 and get the specific sets that they need/want.

Considering it is just as easy to use random loot drops and the MK XI sets you get from FE's is there any reason to spend all that Dilithium and marks on pathetic MK X gear? I generally just wait until I reach Tier 5 and just go straight for the MK XII when I get the chance.
MK X is for Rear Admiral Lower Half not for Vice Admirals.

Simply put, it is. You're more than going to recoup your cost by the the time it takes you to get to T5, and you'll be doing it in gear that is significantly better than what you'll get from FEs, which makes the grind that much less tedious.

You will recoup your costs BUUUUT you will have spent them. Whereas it is not really much trouble to go through Elite STF's with MK XI Jem'Hadar or Breen sets which cost you a little time and not one dilithium or mark.
So cost analysis would indicate (not to sound like a Ferengi but...) that being able to sell your MK XI FE gear for a couple hundred thousand EC's after getting your MK XII Rep gear with no loss is the superior option.
i for one wont be bothering with MK X or XI rep gear my MK Xi caustic gear does just fine in estf's and other pve fleet op's so stright to MK XII for me and fyi i do fine in pvp as well with my mission droped caustic plasma arrays
