How is this happening?

In a recent pug match I noticed my cruiser's shields were being almost instantly brought down as well as my hull taking more damage than usual.

That alone is no big deal, one can be de-buffed to extremes of course, but what interested me and I can't seem to figure out was what the combat log showed me.

It had photon torpedoes doing 6000 (9000) damage. Basically enough to bring down my shields and a good chunk of my hull. They were not crits or HY or anything. All it said was Photon Torpedo. There were other hits of various energy types as well but they were doing the usual damage.

If I'm wrong I'd like to know but shouldn't photon torpedoes hitting a fully shielded target be mostly useless?

All i know is that PvP now is utterly broken - there are so many bugs/exploits it's almost a waste of time.

It's a mess and I don't know how high on the list fixing things is for Cryptic.

Are you sure you had shields ?

I run photons... cause they do sick amounts of dmg and tend to land exactly as my overloads remove a facing.

Take another look at the log and see if you are hit by an overload right before. I also run photons cause there slow... I an easily decloak at 7k and move at my target and by the time I get there to overload the facing at point blank I am dragging 3 photon launches behind me.

I know I was tooling around in some cap and holds earlier. I am sure there was more then one person that sort of went wtf.

Not sure if that's what you are describing. I run photons there not doing anything special with shield pen... but I tend to land them in clusters... that could be what you where experiencing.

My first thought was that I was getting hit by 2 BO2 or BO3, but when I checked the combat log all I saw that would do anything like enough damage were the Photon Torpedoes. It just seemed odd to me. Maybe I've been reading the combat log wrong all these years, but 6000(9000) means I got hit with 15K, of which 9000 were stopped by my shield and 6000 hit my hull right? So not only was a non crit Photon torp hitting for 15K it had around 40% shield penetration?

Maybe the log got it wrong, but whatever it was it melted my entire pug. We were fcing a premade with at least 3 members of the same fleet, so maybe in the chaos of battle I just missed getting huge debuffs, but even so the numbers on those photon torps just seem out the norm, especially when they were hitting reliably 2 or 3 seconds apart.

I wish I had the logs but I don't parse or anything I was just using the chat combat logs.

I think from what you are saying the 6000(9000)... should mean the torp hit for 9000... but 6000 of it in fact hit your hull... after counting your resistance.

I believe the only way to tell if a torp hit shields is to look at the dmg numbers... I see 400(10000) type hits lots in my logs. :)

    For instance
[Combat (Self)] Your Photon Torpedo - Salvo II deals 34318 (19632) Kinetic Damage(Critical) to Assimilated Carrier.
Would be a 19632 Critical Photon hit... but the carrier was debuffed so the total dmg was 34318 to its hull.

For the photons being reliable... ya they have a super short cool down... doffs reset them. So even with one torp if you proc a doff you get to fire again right away.

I think what is making photons the best torp right now is there flight speed combined with the new standard speed people are running.

I know if I start a run at 10k... by the time I get in someones face... I will have 4 or 5 photons following me into the target... so form his point of view he is getting hit by 4-5 photon salvos pretty much instant.

It can be very effective... for sure if I have someones shields down to 1/4 or so that is sometimes enough that the first few will hammer the shield and the last couple might kill them.

Considering my Quantums can do this:

15k for Photons isn't out of the question. You likely got hit by an escort that devoted 5x 30% tac consoles to their photon torps, and possibly sported Adapted Maco for even more kinetic damage.

    @antoniosalieri,

Thinking it over, It might also be that on top what you are describing the player attacking me also waited for the gap in tac team to do as big an alpha as it could to open up my shields for the torps. Throw in some equally times debuffs and its making more sense now at least.

But hey, its not all bad news, this just makes me think about my torpedo sci alt... but all those reps ugh! lol

Ya torp sci is a ton of fun. Works great with the right team... your right though leveling rep is a pain.

Honestly though the important rep for a sci you have in the first few days... level 2 Borg will give you the +30 weapon dmg which is great for a torp boat, and the tier 2 Rom +3crit is nice as well. As a sci you can do pretty well with out any of the tier 4 junk. I don't think any of my sci have more then tier 2 done. They do just fine in pvp.

Someone packing full photon consoles is going to crit for a hell of a lot more than 15k.

15k is a pretty basic crit. 27k on this guy i FOMMed is my best photon hit. with a dam3 crtd1 fleet photon.
