Old player thinking of coming back just for pvp

Greetings!

Just like the subject says i am thinking of returning and i am looking for a sort of "state of the PVP" report.

I used to play science captain back at launch/shortly after. I used to run CPB/PSW shield strip/tricobalt spam. Im sure this will not be viable now as im sure the nerf bat has traveled around quite a bit.

Does anyone have any info they can give me it would be great. I only fly science its all i care for. I will prolly end up rerolling another science despite the RA sci cap i already have. Suggestions on officer setups / modules / etc... all the info would be welcomed :)

How are the PVP ques.
Who sees more action fed/kling
Which side has better quality of life improvements
Who has the most active guilds/clans/crews in the PVP world.

Any other info would be great!

You would have to get me up to speed on how exactly tactical captain makes science abilities/ships better? Did they cross link certain abilities? im assuming science still has sensor scan / sub nuc beam / photon fleet / that energy resistance aura / and all the other goodies. Outside of alpha and fire on my mark i don't seem to remember any that would benefit science?

I also used to run intrepid retro for ablative but that was before they nerfed it so that 0 aux power disabled it. Im sure given what ive seen from the C-store the pay to win abilities have gone off the deep end in this game. I am sure ill have to find a new toy to play with. i was looking at the nadeon torp from the bael trying to cheap-out on a token PSW and use the officer skill slot for something else.

But i guess my main question would be why ditch sensor scan / sub nuc beam etc... for tac officer variety? The way you make it sound the game seems over flowed with tactical as it is why add more?

Im curious as well to see what other people say. Im not a MLG kind of person but at the same time i do like heavy competitive play. Me and the gf end up jumping all over different video games looking for a fight due to this. We have been around the block many times and much like you said we play alot of different games just for PVP.

I need to see if i make friends with one of those monster theorycrafters and number crunchers to see what i end up doing.

damaging sci abilities used to be exotic damage that wasnt boosted by apA.
its now kinetic damage that is boosted by apA.
    then the nerfs came.

    That isn't true at all...
Tactical Captain skills like go down and APA .... have ALWAYS SINCE LAUNCH day effected ALL Damage.

Which has always included things like TBR GW Shockwave Ect

When these guys are talking about nerfs what they are trying to tell you is this.

Things that used to have NO counters and No resists... like CPB... Now have a max of 50% resistance granted... by the Skill tree.

Power Insulators will resist power drains and shield drains... up to a max of 50% if you spend 9 points in it.

There is a handful of other sci resist skills in the tree that will reduce disable times ect.

They are hardly nerfs... and it has nothing at all to do with tacticals.

Tacs still don't and never have boosted Drains either power or shield.... Those are the skills that SOME sci players complain about the skill tree resisting... and it has nothing to do with tacs... tacs don't boost the skills resisted by power insulators at all.

The games issues with pvp balance now mostly revolve around items... and rep.

When you get back into the game you will discover you have 1-2 months of grinding to catch up on rep passive bonuses.... and to unlock the ability to purchase any set equipment.

That right there is complete BS... but thats cryptic for you... and this is what we complained about when they added all this junk... new players (returning after so long you may as well be new)... are going to be disadvantaged until they catch up on there grind fest.

Anyway... outside of the items the balance isn't all that bad... the game is 10x more defensive then it was when you left. Don't let all these kids fool you... you can build a ship that will die 1-2 a night at this point if you really want to... The only way to kill anymore is to spike through peoples massive amounts of healing.

Have fun... Join Opvp the link is at the top of the pvp section.

yeah mostly what im looking for now is player direction on skills that are useful and the ones that arent so i know what to play with as i re-level a new science captain. (pvp abilities only ofc.)

As far as the PVP boot camp.. i took a look into the forums and the sign ups, wait time, and other hoops i don't really look foward to having to wait so long for simple answers on just ability interactions

There really aren't many sci skills that can't be useful if you use the properly.

Join Opvp and ask some questions there on specifics as you will likely get good answers, and a quick conversation is likely to help you more I would bet.

    Viral matrix is popular.

    Gravity well is underrated

    Tractor beams are always good

CPB and Tachyon are hit and miss as people with max resists and lots of shield regen to go with it will be almost uneffected.

Mostly these days honestly Scis... are healing subnuke platforms... with the only really reliable killing being done by burst mode escorts. Premade teams rarely role any cruisers at all... its almost always 2-3 escorts with 2-3 sci ships. Sci ships being the healing nuke platforms.

Next weekend 27th, The PVP Bootcamp will be hosting an evening of events that, while are more specialized then the usual ones, might just be what you're looking for. Have a gander at the dub forum! In the meam time, hide in the OPVP chat channel, dip your toes into the queues and aybe hang out with some PVPers on their voice comms, get into some premades etc. i know our TS is always busy and welcome in the evenings, i'm sure others are too.

Science as in the good old days when they where able to kill people isn't just here anymore cbp/shockwave/tachyon doesn't produce kills even how hard you try. You could do that before as a single science ship with well placed snb /reading opponents buff-cycle.
Sadly enough there is too much passive shield healing that makes CPB even worse then it was after the skill changes.
    Noone.

Transphasic builds say otherwise, they are super OP (at least in 1v1), Viral Matrix (with doffs (duty officers, a new sysyem that adds passive powers so to speak such as being able to use the 1 science team just as you would 2 science teams, or in the case of the Viral Matrix doff a random subsystem power outage on an enemy a little while after Viral Matrix has been applied)) and tractor beam will keep damage off of you most of the time + you can use max aux power for EPIC heals (I don't have one (transphasic build) but I know a few who do)! Transfer Shield Strength is awesome, and hazard emmiters is crucial (well almost) to a build (also is crucial against borg etc in PvE).
