"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Game mechanics, progression, etc etc same post since 2010.
Good morning Snow White. How was your nap ?
You have to take into account that this is a game, and an mmo at that.....
Think of STO as a Star Trek Simulator, rather than the tv series.

As a Star Trek fan watching it first run starting back in 1969; I'll let you in on a little secret:
Star Trek (doesn't matter what series or film) has NEVER been 100% internally consistent with itself, EVER!:D
back in the day, we had a term for these inconsistencies: YATI = "Yet Another Trek Inconsistency" - and the trick was; when you spotted one, you flagged it as such, and attempted to come up with a rationalization (that was always the fun part) that twisted it o somewhat fit (some inconsistencies are easier to explain away then others of course.)
but my point? How can you be a "Star Trek Purist", when the Star Trek Franchise is anything but "pure"? (and it this case I mean 100% internally consistent.)
let it go, and just learn to embrace the various inconsistencies and you'll have a better fan experience with the whole thing.:)
PWE ARC Drone says: "Your STO forum community as you have known it is ended...Display names are irrelevant...Any further sense of community is irrelevant...Resistance is futile...You will be assimilated..."
But this is a game, so certain things have to be done differently, otherwise everyone would be an uber elite awesome super sci/tac/engi captain.
The ships are the same, they have been broken into categories to make it easier to select a ship/ships.
Now I'm going to let everyone in on a little secret about ship classifications...
ready?
They are meaningless designations
In reality you can shoehorn in a ship to just about any classification. For example in reality the term "Frigate" and "Cruiser" have been used interchangeably for centuries. In 1975 the US Navy declared that all nuclear powered Frigates were now "Cruisers" the existing Light Guided Missile Cruisers (which had not been renamed Frigates for some reason) now became "Cruisers" as well, while all the other Frigates were now "Destroyers", all the Escorts were now "Frigates", the Destroyers remained Destroyers except for the one class that was so awesome they became Cruisers, and the Anti-Sub, Attack, Escort and Helicopter carriers became simply "Aircraft Carriers". Confused yet? It gets worse, just because two ships are Frigates or Cruisers doesn't mean they have anything close to the same capabilities.
The Coast Guard fortunately avoid the whole situation when long ago they simply declared anything they own that floats a "Cutter".
The down side of the fantastic ability to mix and match ship class parts in STO means that all these ships that would most likely just be called a Something-class ship must now be a Adjective-Verb-Noun-class ship simply so we know what the heck someone is talking about.
I like to think of it this way, all the names like Fleet Escort Carrier, Long Range Science Vessel, Deep Space Tactical Battle Frigate or whatever is just something thought up by some engineer at Utopia Planitia trying to get his project funded.
Several cruisers they have fed side were actually science ships in show.
Ship classes don't mean much, what matters is the bridge layout, console layout, and that's pretty much it. (aside from damage modifiers shield modifiers etc)
