Need More Ships? Reclassify Them

Instead of building ships to fit a specific purpose navies around the world instead convert ships they already have to fit that purpose. For example to make a research vessel they would take a cruiser cut out the gun turrets, remove some hull plating, etc. then add some labs and other scientific equipment and you have a research vessel.

Example: Take an escort and remove 1 forward weapon slot, lower the hull points, shift console and Boff slots, up the shield power and viola you have a science vessel.

But in order to do this you'd have to reclassify the ships in STO. It would be silly to call the example ship above a sci-escort. But you could classify the above ship as a light cruiser and then give it a title such as recon vessel or research ship. Or escort if you don't modify it.

Ship classification is done by size so it would be fairly easy to impliment. Here are the classifications that most navies use -

Light Crusiers - This is the size of ship that are built for escort duty and are commonly modified for recon or research. They are small, fast, and in the case of the unmodified version, pack a punch. Commonly used for ant-piracy and interdiction. In battle these fast manueverable ships can zip in sink a larger vessel and zip back avoiding return fire. Sector block patrol would be their peacetime funtion

Medium Cruiser -A ship of the line larger and has more fire power than a Light Cruiser. Most of the cruisers as well as the hybrid flightdeck ships in STO fall into this category. Commonly used as ships of war or larger research vessel. Its purpose in war is to act as a screen to keep smaller harder to target ships from getting to the Carrier and sinking it. Pirate killers, would be used for sector patrol.

Heavy Cruiser - A ship of war, bigger than the med cruiser but is still manueverable enough to catch the smaller vessels in its gunsights but can also take on larger vessels with support from another ship. The bigger ships in STO fall into this category and this would be the size that would be used for exploration, big enough to venture out on its own. The exploration sci versions would be made from vessels of this size.

Of course some ships are built for a specific purpose and these are -

Battle Ships - Larger than a hvy cruiser, heavily armored and has lots of guns, missels, etc. Its sole purpose is to destroy other ships period. Slow so it has a hard time targeting the light crusiers.

Carrier - Larger than a battleship but has no teeth of its own but instead carries enough attack and fighter planes to flatten large cities. Its planes give it the most firepower of any ship but its slow and ponderous and vulnerable to the other vessels.

Dreadnaught - A bigger nastier version of a battleship.

All the UFP's ships could be classified this way and all the Klingon's except the BoP which to me is a combiantion destroyer/submarine. Very fast, very manueverable with loads of firepower, can dish it out in abundance but can't take much dmg.

Anyway its just a thought to get more ships or be able to fly a certain ship that we happen to like the looks of but doesn't meet the specifications that we may want.
