PLEASE can we have a toning down of visual effects

I know that this is probably not the right section, but please do not move it. Here's my reason why. This problem ONLY arises during PvP.

The visual effects in the game are currently off the charts insane. Half the time I cannot see anything on the screens except for blinding, graphic-card overloading, epilepsy-inducing flashes all over the place.

It just does not feel like Star Trek anymore.

Besides that over that past while migraines have started to develop regularly after I have played thereby cutting the time I can play without walking away from it in physical discomfort.

Please can you not tone down the effects with some kind alpha blending, gradient or transparency? I am not a games graphics designer, but there must be some way to improve on the current glare.

great point. star trek always had a minimalistic look. 1 beam shot at a time, 1 set of dual cannons only, the sky not full of tiny strike craft. at least curently theres a fun factor, but what ever would make it more trek, would automatically make it more fun to me

Like a cat that got into a box of crayons and puked them up on your monitor...is how bad it can get, eh?

There was a mixed carrier Fedball in Ker'rat the other day. Elite Scorps, Fermion, Scattering, TS Hypers, Mines, Theta, EWP, GW, TR...and yeah - like a cat that got into a box of crayons...

Most games have options to turn all that TRIBBLE down/ off manually. Is STO lacking in even that basic a feature?

Graphic settings and monitor color saturation should take care of the color pukestorm methinks....

I love the chaos. The game needs a better UI though.

Thanks to all of the Plasma love recently, I slow down dramatically a lot now with 15 Plasma procs and some EWP to go with it.

You can turn a lot of it down. There's nothing to be done about all the space junk NPCs floating around in a typical match though. Often it's pretty hard to see a player through all of it.

Yeah, some toning down would be very good.
Plasma burns all the time, feedbackpulse flashes, antiproton sweeps etc etc all stacking on you and you can't even see your own ship anymore.

Darkfrontiers, I couldn't agree more. Borg explosion flashes in Ker'rat = OW.

Quite a bit of it can be turned down or off through graphic settings in game, and what indicators you want to see.

For those that it causes physical discomfort, I feel for you. It would be nice to have even more control over what you see.

I play almost as low as you can go. This is not true.

Way to go with the thread, optimizing this latest wine version makes me wish the exact same thing. It would be so much easier on my computer and cryptic's servers (I think) if you could tone down effects. I wish plasma would just trail a bit out of nacelles or holes. I wish all the ability icons above ships were smaller.

This would be so nice, I wish you put it into a different forum for higher visibility.

It would certainly be easier on your computer, but cryptic's servers would be unaffected. Visual effects like plasma fire particles, flashes from beams going off, etc are all done client side. The server is essentially a giant calculator which doesn't care where to put the particles or what they're supposed to look like at a given moment, as they're irrelevant to the bigger equation of space (and ground) combat.

Agreed. I'd worry less about trying to interpret visual effects if I had an improved buff/debuff user interface. e.g. tooltips that actually give me detailed info (live updated, based on skills/effects) instead of just the name of the power.

No, the Cryptic insistence on 11-year-old-player-pleasing flashy is equally annoying in PvE.

I've always found the visuals in STO to be way over exaggerated and not canon even. But in PvP it really doesnt help seeing a big screen blinding blob with 4 facings showing off when someone uses an EptS for instance.

Not to mention all those weird stars in circles (What is this supposed to reflect startrek wise anyway?) animations on shields totally covering someone when he's being shot at.

Wish there was an additional tab in the options to tweak graphical effects. (Without giving you an advantage over others obviously)

Turning down graphics doesn't remove all the unnecessary visual TRIBBLE like over exagerrated plasma burns, EptS blobs with side facings shown, should i go on...

i would love a button to reduce the effect myself..

especially plasma dots and stuff like that should be reduced or reduceable by players

    min options/ half res

id play if it was all text

    graphics fail ftl lolz

u cry lag spike i vape whole balls. 10 v 10 specialist 10 year old pc. just turn it off, turn it all off, go to advanced options/ troubleshooting, minimize everything and go to half res.

oh and give ur targeting hud options a lookover, without any reticles or names/fleets u have way less lag and graphics wierding

using those options works great for meta game, showing recently damaged people different than "fresh" targets

i always found stos plethora of options to be adequate upon tweeking.

use free cam for minimal graphics lag from follow effects

then you can always go to the extra step, minimizing possible options in your actual video card windows settings.

    and

dont forget the-maxfps rider to add in command line options on launcher, among others suitable for your particular needs..........

I actually like it, I have a huge monitor and a very good graphics card. I can see everything clearly and can select targets though all the spam. You are easily able to see what abilities are being run by the whats happening visual, take that away and it back to staring at buff trays.

SO either upgrade your PC and stop the QQ'ing.
