I have played the game for a year or so and have a Tac on each faction. I dabbled in PUG PVP last summer. I was pretty hopeless, TBH. I took a break from the game but now I am back but have only done doffing, reputation and ESTFs.
I'd like to get back into some PVP. My problem is that I am simply not quick enough when it comes to reading the battlefield, trying to read all those little buff symbols on a target, chaining powers etc.
To give an example, my nicely built Breen ESTF ship has 2 lots of TT, CRF, APB, EPtS along with distribute shields and tactical initiative all bound to my fire button! I only have to select APA and a few others. I also have a panic button that chains some running away powers. This is the only way I can realistically use all the options at my disposal and get the DPS. Otherwise some of them would spend too long unused.
Now, I know that none of this bodes well for PVP (!) but I am wondering what ship I could use that, with a sensible build, could allow me to be some use to my team?
I have been considering a Fleet 'Defiant' as we approach T3. My thoughts were that perhaps I could set it all up under cloak, do an alpha strike and then have time to sort it all out again. Same deal with a Bop/B'rel torp boat on KDF side.
In PvP, you're gonna have to master some rudimentary chaining of powers and some precise timing of said powers in order to really maximize potential.
If you have difficulty gauging the enemy's status, I would suggest adopting more of a tanking/healing setup on a cruiser or carrier, and doing your best to tank and heal others, and maybe even debuff the enemy. DPSing won't mean much of anything unless you're able to time your burst attacks with gaps in the enemy defenses, which means being able to pay attention to their status and their patterns.
Even the strongest burst attack from a Fleet Defiant or JHAS can be shrugged off by a tanking cruiser's defenses, if it's not timed right.
My PvP toon is Krov, of The House of Snoo. Beware of my Hegh'ta of doom.
Good suggestions so far. As someone who has played for a while and just branched into PvP in the last couple months I totally get where you are coming from. At least you have some key binds going, even if they're not ideal, you have an idea of what's going on.
Fleet defiant rocks pretty hard in PvP, definitely recommend it if you are comfortable in an escort, although the Fleet Patrol Escort is more forgiving in survivability, and if I recall it's tier 2.
If you want I can help you out some in game from the perspective of a newish but fairly decent player. Hit me up @jorricane - my playtime is a bit erratic at the moment but you can probably catch me in the evenings CST.
My guess is "hope" keeps people not playing but posting on the forums. For others, its a path of sad realization and closure. Grieving takes time. The worst "haters" here love the game, or did at some point.

I'm in the same boat, but for now I only look for two things: a long yellow buff bar = good luck killing it, and an orange icon with a quarter circle tucked in a corner = target is weak, kill it.
If you have a JHAS you don't need a defiant technically you shouldn't need any other ship
The defiant hits hard but the Boff seating is just plain stupid
No this is not another JHAS trumps everything it just is the best pvp ship barring something like a wells from what I've seen
As or technique it's all about practice go out get whooped que up get whooped some more que up get whooped again and so on so on
As for reading buffs on targets if you start fighting say an oddy for instance and after 2,3 maybe 4 passes its not dead change targets ignore the oddy if it has that much tanking its guns aren't gunna hurt you
Look for TT and rsp gaps look at those signs remember those and watch out for them their the two main ones really, obviously there are others
Another key I find people doing is most people you go up against will use their buffs when the see you coming if you in an escort its a piece o cake to avoid them it's Called attack pattern omega and evasive manoeuvres just get there heads spinning whilst there apa and tac fleet runs down then your safe after that
Now if you havin a premade battle that's another beast altogether and I can't give you any tips on that because I really wouldn't know what to do myself lol
----=====This is my opinion you don't have to listen and no one else has to read them these "OPINIONS" are based on my exploits and my learning other people will have their opinions and that's fine just don't knock my way of doing things thanks=====----
From the OP it looks like he only has the JHAS on his KDF, so if he wants to PvP fed side, it doesn't do much good. Defiant would be the easiest way to get a decent ship fed side without spending 400+ million.

Yeah I just reread the thread but didn't know if that was the case
My defiant drives me crazy at times (personal opinion)
The mvam is fantastic when in speed demon mode along with the armitage running danubes

Lot's of great advice posted already - many thanks.
@travelingmaster: I knew somebody would suggest a healer role as it makes sense. However, found I preferred the game once I switched to Escorts. That said, I forgot to mention I have a D'Kora on the KDF side. If I do decide on healer at some point I guess this would be a good ship. @edalgo: Thanks for the 1v1 offer which I will bear in mind. I have read all sorts but will seek out that guide. I am happy with what most stuff in the game does but I bet I'll learn a thing or two.
@snoge00f: Is there a chat channel that people use to arrange PVPs?
@jornado: Thanks for the offer and tips. I can't buy a patrol escort because, and sorry for the offence in advance, I cannot stand the sight of it on the screen. Horrible design. No, this shouldn't matter but I do have to look at it! The Defiant is iconic and I am re-watching all DS9 at the moment - first time since it was originally broadcast. @dummyname: Good point: Long buff bar = bide your time. Like it!
@mustafatennick: You have said what I hoped somebody would - use the JHAS as a PVP ship on the KDF side. It is somewhat wasted on ESTFs! Thanks for the buffs and general advice.

I'd really like to know what about it drives you crazy! If I don't get one then I probably will use the Armitage with Danubes as I already own it and really love the looks (Armitage skin).

I love the idea of a heavy escort I'm more of a kdf man myself or I would use the armitage as its a beauty
My tips were just what I've learnt and how I've adapted not saying that's the be all and end all but seems to work for me
The defiant - ok I own this baby, fleet version
Damage - crazy damage for obvious reasons
Speed - good speed/ turn
Boff layout - that ensign tac is a massive pain if you want to use beam overload then I great I don't use it as it messed with my power too much you could use torpedos but again I don't use them on this just can't get away with them especially the speed I try to fly in pvp timing them to hit hull is difficult
Survivability - massively hindered by that stupid tac ensign if only it was eng or universal
Summary - too many tac slots I know it sounds stupid but I hate waste and I find that's what I have when I run it is massive waste
Again this is just me I've seen some deadly defiants clash into me I've seen some that are hard to kill(eng cap) and I've seen some that just won't leave you alone(speed) but I just can't get away with it maybe I just need to try harder and practice more with it or maybe get a team where I can get some support instead of it being the kdf against me and a boat load of AFKers(happens a lot fedside)
If I had the choice again and the zen I would but the mvae get the fleet version or the armitage but those two I'm just basing off what has looked more impressive from a kdf point of view sometimes pure damage isn't key that's where the hangar comes in and really owns some players
----=====This is my opinion you don't have to listen and no one else has to read them these "OPINIONS" are based on my exploits and my learning other people will have their opinions and that's fine just don't knock my way of doing things thanks=====----
@mustafatennick: Thanks for the honesty. I see where you are coming from. I would also rather it had an Ensign Engineering slot there. The Armitage has a similar layout but at least it has 3 eng slots so you can run 2 X EPtS and an Aux to SIF. Also, it loses the Lt. Comm 2nd tac slot
@patrickngo: I hear you on the practice! Thanks for the re-assurance I already own what I need.
Incidentally, I don't do lock boxes either - OK, about 10 in a year as I couldn't resist the odd key from the exchange - all full of rubbish. I bought the D'Kora for EC when I was doing a lot of doffing (ill and off work at the time) as I fancied it. TBH, I still like it and equip it now and again. It was a similar deal with the JHAS: It was announced and I decided I wanted it very badly. I sold everything in the bank and email that I could, turned all my DL into EC via the R&D materials etc. etc., pooled both characters cash and got 170M EC. One popped on the exchange during the last event similar to this one, for 165M EC, and that was that - poor but happy! The Armitage came from DL into C-points and a whopping ?4 of real world cash!
The summary I have taken from all the helpful information is that I should use the Armitage with Danubes on Fed side and JHAS on KDF.
I am now going to strip the bug of it's plasma/rep ESTF kit and work out a build - plenty of info in threads I have bookmarked. Then, I'll work on the Armitage which currently has a Mk XII phaser build using the 'STF' weapons available last year - decent place to start.
I'll prevail on your kindnesses again when I have a build to analyse but I'll try and get as close as I can before I ask.
Well, I built the Armitage first. Won't go into the uninventive build now as it obviously needs work but I did a FedvFed and FedvKDF. I went 7:1 and 9:2 with about 290K damage on each. No idea how this fares and I was on the winning team so maybe getting an easy ride.
Still, what a blast! It all seems pretty insane and I'm ashamed to say the only things I looked for on the enemy were health bars and shields!
I went 'auto' on EPtS, TT, Danube launch and tac initiative. I manually selected/madly clicked APs, CRFs, THY, Borg tractor beam and Theta radiation (how much fun was it to dowse a couple of carriers in that muck? ).
The things I learnt were:
1) I don't know what the sci stuff was, I think AP sweep from JHAS pets mainly but I sometimes found myself dead in the water. Perhaps I need Science Team.
2) I had APB1 & APO2. APB is no good when you are tractored so perhaps I should lose CRF3 and have 2 copies of APO? Armitage tac boff layout is Cmdr, Lt., Ens.
3) It's mad ... did I mention that ?

Lolol I would definitely recommend 2 apos apb is great for pve but tac team clears it so
Just keep at it if you wanna roll out some time give me a shout @mustafatennick
Can't remember if o said it already but the best phrase anyone can ever say about sto is practice makes perfect Someone said that toe once and I live by it everytime I log in
As I say im not the best but when I use GDF I GDF it's a bit of either their going down or we are then fireeee everything!
----=====This is my opinion you don't have to listen and no one else has to read them these "OPINIONS" are based on my exploits and my learning other people will have their opinions and that's fine just don't knock my way of doing things thanks=====----
I equipped the Armitage (Fed) and Bug (KDF) with more of a leaning towards PVP, i.e. CRF and APO where I was using CSV and APB before (for STFs).
Probably neither build is fantastic, especially as I am using weapons I already had but I have managed to get much more manoeuvrability from the ships using a higher engine power setting combined with rare Mk XII RCS.
I went in a match with a mate on Teamspeak. Really beneficial, even though he was using his Breen ESTF ship (set up just like mine ).
I have only played a few PVP since I last posted, with varied results but one question burns bright:
Shields! I was using 3 piece Assimilated Mk XI plus emitters/field generator. System works well and regenerates quickly - TSS2 and an aux battery is immense help. However, most advice I read is 2 part Borg plus a MACO/KHG shield. I have tried this in PVP and ESTF. All that happens is my shield gets fried and I cannot quickly repair it - this has lead to me being parked 15km from a tac cube on full aux whilst waiting, or being dead in PVP.
So, I have gone back to 3 part Borg and get the benefit of the shield heal and tractor beam again.
Weird. My characters don't have access to T5 maco/borg sets, I'm just using purple XI covariants [cap]X2 [pla] on my escorts with dual purple XI shield emitter arrays and dual tac teams, and I run (with skills/buffs) roughly 125 weapons 50 shields 75 engines 50 aux. Havent dragged an escort into pvp but it does just fine on ESTFs.
Perhaps it is the two purple emitters making it work. I could try that on the Armitage, where I have one plus a field generator but the Bug has only one science slot which I chose to put a generator in - I will try an emitter.

I would suggest he fly with a team of experienced players so that he can ease himself into the game and learn how they play.
It's a team game first and foremost.
