I know most of us are cynical...and a bit jaded when we hear the same mantra that comes from Cryptic -- that the next Season will be THE Season for Klingon faction content...
But a thought occurred to me...and I actually sort of posted the bare-bones of this theory in another thread in the general discussion area...
Some players believe that the May update will possibly bring the Romulan faction to the table...others think that it is actually a major expansion in disguise. I do not think that either of these ideas are valid. In looking at the indicators, I think that there is something else at play...
First, the terminology. The May Update started out as "Season 8", then, supposedly because it was so big, the name changed...but if the update is so big, then why isn't it being termed as an expansion? The theory that I came up with is that for legal, commercial, and economic reasons they can't term it as an expansion if the "update" actually is the one that will provide parity of content...and a significant number of ships...to the Klingon faction -- enough to finally claim that it is a finished faction, with the ability to start at level 1, and at least some parity of vessels, mission, and content with the Feds.
If this is the case, then they can't term it as an expansion, because it would be fixing something that has been lingering with STO since day one -- an unfinished faction. You can't field an expansion when the core game is basically unfinished to begin with. Add to that idea the fact that CBS and PW are unlikely to allow Cryptic to field a new Romulan faction when they have not proved that they can finish what they started in the first place, and that is what lends validity to this theory --
I am guessing here...but the idea is essentially this -- that even if Cryptic wanted to introduce a Romulan faction, the people that manage their business model -- CBS for content and ships, and PW for management, marketing, etc., will likely not allow Cryptic to bring in a Romulan faction until they can prove that they can manage the factions that are already in the game, which up to this point, they have not been able to do because one of those factions is only half finished.
The main obstacle to the fielding of the Romulan faction (besides crafting the content, missions, ships, and reworking PvP and Coop type events to include a third faction) is the unfinished Klingon faction. Cryptic's unfinished work is technically holding hostage their ability to take STO to the next step.
In looking ahead...a Romulan faction will be a major economic step for STO -- it really will be a money maker...so you can bet that they want to go in that direction. An entire new faction, with new C-Store items for sale, lockboxes, etc. You can bet they are salivating over the idea...but they can't get there...because the people who pay the bills and who manage the game are likely telling them that they need to prove that they can manage two factions to begin with -- something that they have pretty much failed to do.
Maybe I am being way too optimistic...and reading too much into this. That is likely true and I freely admit that...but perhaps this theory deserves some consideration as well. Maybe - just maybe - this "update" really is the real deal...and we can finally start at level 1 as a Klingon, with parity of missions, and some parity of vessels.
I don't think that may update will be what season 8 was intended to be aka "finishing KDF"
Due to economics I think it will be an event mostly for federation player base because if it is true what they say, there are much more fed players than kdf(Cryptic could tell how many fed players don't have an kdf char so finally we would have an idea about the real ratio between fed/kdf)
My guess is it will be NW related at least as PVP is involved due to new engine.Could be more new arena maps.Other guess is that it would have conection with New Romulus .(remeber buried iconian gate and the remans dwelling underground ?)An Iconian "Nukara" ?
"There already is a Borg faction, its called the Federation. They assimilate everyone else's technology and remove any biological or technical distinctiveness and add it to their own."

The big may update plan will be to temper our hopes for the may update.
As you can see, cryptic wont fix the kdf faction. Proof?
1) cryptic sells junk to make money to make content
2) cryptic doesnt sell any junk to the kdf
One bad ship in two years?
3) if they intended to fix the faction, would they not sell junk to eventually make money? Even if it isn't profitable now, would it not be profitable next month when they fix the worst faction in mmo history?
If they thought they could fix the faction in the may update what benefit would there be to not sell things now in anticipation?
Answer: no confidence that it will happen.
They are not going to fill out the zen store with new kdf customizations in may.
Possibility: Playable Romulans, not as a third faction, but as an option for each faction.
Think about how many problems that solves!
And we already have the 'one big happy family' thing in the new TD sector.

You missed 1 possibility.
They said that season 8 is going to be the KDF season, so when the May update comes and doesn't bring anything to the KDF they can say that they did not lie about season 8 being KDF oriented because this won't be season 8.

Well played. And definitely something I could see them doing.

I can totally see that coming, you should make a note of this post until May.

Awesome point! You are right, I did not consider that...and to be honest, it is something that is definitely possible. That, by itself, is a sad statement as to the level of trust that is lacking between this part of the player demographic and Cryptic.
