Lead Content Designer Scott "Goatshark" Shicoff shares details about the twelfth Starbase Featured Project in this entry of the Season 7 News Dev Blog series.
I'm sorry, but really? I'd not even consider this cosmetic. For 200,000 Dilithium, the Federation Fleet I am apart of gets... exocomps? You guys must seriously be running out of ideas if you're providing us with this. I can't speak for all of my fleet, but I'm not going to be putting a single dilithium crystal towards this.
Not that we have any intention to do this project - all of them are still WAY too overpriced for not much - but, since no matter how many holiday bundles I have purchased, how much grind I did during the winter event, or how many times I try to go and buy them from the Exchange (at RIDICULOUSLY, extortionally high prices), there were NEVER enough of the Bajoran Gratitude Beads to be had to finish the Holiday Fleet SB "Breen Ornament" project! That has even been among multiple toons' daily grinding (fighting snowmen, mining snowball piles, running DOff assignments) among multiple Fleet members - and I'm going to assume the prices will just continue to go up and, if more boxes are purchased, the beads will still be in scarce enough supply prior to the 31st that we'll never reach 250! We are going to be stuck "completing" this project until next Winter Event... I have bumped into quite a few others out there in this predicament as well.
You all REALLY need to think about lowering some of the numbers required for these SB projects, "special" and otherwise, and REALLY need to think about allowing us the ability to abandon them completely, or en lieu of others we decide to take on instead!
Fleet Commander
Caprica's Revenge (...actually active since November 2010, which may one day be important to archaeologists, but not to anyone else...)
I usually keep quiet in these announcement threads, but I just can't with this one. Exocomps? This is a joke right? If exocomps were going to be added to the base via featured project, then they should have been included with the equally useless "Post two guards at every door" project.
There has to be more to this, right? The blog mentioned passing travelers. Does this mean random NPCs are going to start showing up and strolling though the base, like they would in an actual spaceport, as part of this project? Or was that written to just to add fluff and smooth over the fact that for 200,000 dilithium all we get are a couple of flying toasters?
It would be great if one of these projects would actually do something with the big white dot in the middle of the floor. It's called "Ops" yet doesn't look like a command center of any kind. It's shaping up to be more of an airport lounge.
Thank you for the T6 Galaxy Class. - I support Tovan Khev. - Please bring back the exploration missions.
Or a functional shooting range we can use for target practice and to vet new gear builds? Something that actually gives us a real reason to go to the base, not just decorative and npc fluff that does nothing.
I'm not saying don't have the fluff projects, but maybe also have some functional special projects too. Maybe a fleet tribble terrarium that would store tribbles of value and food items for them to eat. It could have a guided breeding program that would take the guess work out as long as the fleet owned the needed parent and food. You'd just order it off the menu and it would unlock to your inventory.
Another fun idea, would be to allow fleets to unlock aspects of time limited events to last beyond their time. For example, the winter epoh doff contact would have been a good one. Then folks with leftover winter epoh tags could still breed new epohs, but still nobody would get new tags for winter epohs. Maybe a limited version of the winter award vendor, with some of the cosmetic items available whenever you have the winter commodities.
Just to flesh out the possibilities, here is another idea, we could unlock different ships to fleet ownership, either with a c store ship by running a project for it specifically, or for a lockbock type ship by submitting the ship package to a generic project. Once owned by the fleet, a ship can be unlocked to a single fleet member at a time by fleet leaders for a short time, say a few hours. Just long enough to test drive it or so folks who aren't able to own the ship to at least get to play for a little bit, but not so long that people would stop buying ships.
Maybe baseside minigames would be another unlock. Poker? Dabo? Kadis Kot? 3D Chess? The games would let you gamble with fleet marks, with an actual "pot" of marks that fleet members have bet.
Pathetic project, devs should know better especially with the negative feedback most leave on here and the dev blogs comment section about some of these p poor projects for 200k dilithium. Come on add useful stuff not vanity TRIBBLE this is suppose to a place to work not just go to the station and look about cryptic. Add some functional stuff like a computer library u can access for lore, a holodeck that has a few actual programs to do i.e simulations of stuff on ship or a relaxation program. A shuttlebay that works i.e you can climb in and manually undock and dock a shuttle from a ship and base?
Really hate this not trying and just going the cheap and easy routes for stuff in sto lately its really disappointing. F2P doesnt have to equal lazy ideas and lazy content just because its free...
I think they've said that the in game exocomps are non-sentient versions, so that we don't feel bad about summoning them to get blown up so often.
Right, like the red shirts we keep beaming down.
Going to pass on this as well. I'm usually all for things that make the base more lively or militaristic, but unless the Exocomps stop once in a while, turn on disco lights and force people in the immediate area to dance for a few seconds, then continue on, there are many many MANY better things to spend 200k dilithium on. Like +300 DOff capacity. 20+ lock box keys. A ship or two. A few dozen DOffs.
One day, the return on the base investments will be balanced with the dilithium cost...but it is NOT THIS DAY!
I think the problem with the projects is the cost/benefit part. When you look all the projects, it's hard to find the value on them. But that beign said, all the projects toghether they look nice. But the cost is too high.
isn't this game like supposed to be an MMO or something?
would we not rather want REAL people visiting our Starbase, instead of having to pay for NPCs to (badly) simulate that?
heck since this horrible chrome Breen Ship "2012" logo hangs in the center of our starbase i don't even like to go there anymore, nothing but immersion breaking to have a 2012 sign in a game that is supposed to be in 2409, and a Breen Ship advertisement that won't even stay OFF when i press the button, every time the instance is reloaded it is ON again... bleh
I have a proposition :make a vendor from the NPC's .
It could sell things like hypos/regens and ship batteries.
It should be able to buy back loot from players .
This way everybody would be happier I think
"There already is a Borg faction, its called the Federation. They assimilate everyone else's technology and remove any biological or technical distinctiveness and add it to their own."

Why not instead of just adding more NPCs, give them some flavor. Give them some interesting dialogue tidbits and behavior quirks while they wander around. Maybe make a lore NPC available that dives a little bit into the background of the Ferasans and Exocomps. (voiceovers would make it even better)

Projects that serve a purpose would complete make them more worth considering.

Stock models, no functionality.
At least put some effort into those projects. It feels they're something that was done by interns.
"After you get me a fresh coffee, could you copy and paste some exocomps into Fleet 4's starbase real quick?"
If I wanted to go to a starbase were the NPCs are as thick as a bag of bricks I'd stay on ESD
Here, this link might help you with future projects for the Sinkhole, I mean starbase >>This<<

And bythe way the KDF costume is wonderful, it's been redesigned for these cats isn't it? I can remember the fur messing with Ferasan heads...
God, lvl 60 CW. 17k.
ie.. dump a Ensign, Lieutenant, Commander and Captain Dummie in the holodeck and bouys in space for us to shoot at.
failing that... can we a new deck on our starbase? .. somthing that would make us go "owww" not "da TRIBBLE?"

Ah its a new year and I really missed the folks complaining about the 200K each project costs.
All the projects will cost 200K just get used to it.

Our fleet stopped attempting these because of all the OTHER resources sinks bleeding us dry.
