What is it with Trekkies and their lack of imagination?

STO just HAS to have loads of people we've already met; Leonard James Akaar, McCoy, Scotty, holographic Leeta, talking to Spock, J'dan, Miral Paris, , Kirayoshi O'Brien, Akira Sulu (sure, we haven't met him but come on!) Naomi Wildman and that whiny b**ch Jake Kurland...

Someone mind explaining why there are Hirogen and 8472 in the Alpha Quadrant?

It's a HUGE galaxy! Get creative!

From what I can tell, the only one on the list that was actually requested by the playerbase was Leeta, and non-mentions: Morn.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

The presence of Hirogen and Undine are clearly explained in the Storyline. The Hirogen are even mentioned in the loading sceens.

And since there hunting grounds are so vast as they expand up to the romulan neutral zone, it is not really a surprise seeing them here (Voy:Message in a bottle.

    I don't see how.

They're a perfectly fitting Star Trek species.

    Humanoid with funny heads? Check.
Society dominated by a central philosophical theme? Check.
Visually unique starship construction style? Check.

I can understand people being in love with them as a concept, but actually finding them as a negative addition to the game is frankly baffling when they embody everything you need to be a Star Trek species.

The Deferi are perfect, just take everything they babble about balance as a commentary on the Fed/KDF faction balance and they make so much sense.

    My point exactly! How booooooooooooring.

The Deferi nothing new, to the point I am convinced they were created to be the most generic and boring species ever. I don't want to save them, I don't want to help them, I don't want to learn about them, I agree with the Breen, and let the Borg have the rest. They're probably making the collective weaker by the day (That explains a lot actually...).

The Deferi are a weak race with all the cultural depth of cardboard. In fact, a race of cardboard boxes would be infinitely more interesting.

I'm fairly sure that Cryptic used lots of math and science to find the equation for the most possible suck, and that equation = Deferi.

The Hirogen had Sattilite Networks set up that reach the outskirts of the Beta Quadrant (least, I think it was the Beta Quadrant). It was stated one or the other in Message in a Bottle. It stands to reason (as said above) that the Hirogen would be everywhere.

As for the Undine (8472) they're being manipulated by the Iconian.

The Deferi are boring. The sooner the Breen launch an all-out assault on their homeworld the better. Wipe them out!

I agree with the point that we keep seeing old characters and their offspring. I kind of got cranked in the mission where we meet "Thomas" Rikers son. We need new characters and heroes, not recycling names. Do we really need Mudds great-great-great-grandson?

All of those that preach about balance in the universe, yeah. If they're willing to take up arms, dance around in as little clothing as possible, or slave away in Dilithium Mines (so I don't have to do it to get my 8k a day) then those ones can be left alive. The others though. Bye Bye!

Its refreshing to see the FED-like attitude most people in this thread have. Ah wait, not FED-like, Terran Empre-like. The FED were actually the good ones. And we all know who survived longer.

Hey! I witnessed Joshua Riker beat a disruptor turret bunker to death with his bare fists in order to save his friends, and WIN. He earned my respect!

But yeah, Mudds great-great-great-grandson and Cyrano Jones's great-great-great-grandson? Not only is that rather lame, it's a very scary thought that this guy reproduced. :P :P
Ah good... You did see what I did there :)

    Good indeed.

Actually, not check. They use the same "generic" ships as the Vito'D, the Phanoians, and all those other random races that cause trouble in Exploration Clusters.

I don't hate the Deferi the way so many people do, but I don't find them particularly interesting either.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

The fan service is a necessity of this game. If not for familiar faces, places, and names; what would make this Star Trek Online?

I, for one, think Cryptic has excellently peppered this game with 'Trek' IP. What would bother me is if they created a Star Trek game, and paid no respect to the universe that existed before them. I don't feel they've done that. Even the Deferi are fine, IMO.

Bam, wow thanks for that. Its the first thing that came to my mind when I read the thread title. You'll also get folks scream "that's not canon!!!" each time something new shows up.

I play a Trek MMO to meet Trek Aliens and Trek Characters, not random Aliens I've never herd of...it's not enough that players run around in other Sci Fi looking aliens or other franchise's characters, so let Cryptic bring more Trek aliens and people into the game like Picard in speedos. ;)

Also I agree death to the Defera, I feel about them the same way Kirk felt about the Organians.

Gentlemen, I have no great love for you, your planet, your
culture. Despite that, Mr. Spock and I are going to go out
there and quite probably die in an attempt to show you that
there are some things worth dying for."

The Hirogen and 8472 are explained in the Lore and the storyline (Spoiler:8472 have and Iconian Gate, the Hirogen just kept exploring for more deadly prey.)

As for other faces and names, would you create a DCU MMO without Superman or Batman, a Mario MMO without Mario, Luigi and Peach, or even a Ratchet and Clank MMO without Ratchet, Clank and Qwark (ok I want to blast the guys head in sometimes, but he has become a fixed part of the in game lore.)

You put recognisable characters in to tie it into the IP, yes Star Trek has the ships, but it was never about them as much as about the crew exploring the strange new worlds, fighting a war or trying to return home. You never saw more than 10 minutes of exterior footage in most episodes, and most of that would be stock footage.

Face it, even most kids who've barely been introduced to Star Trek today know who Spock is, putting in those familiar names and places makes it, well, it makes it feel like Trek.

Let Cryptic add familiar names and places, Naomi, Spock, Scotty, Paris, Riker, O'Brian, Worf, hell, I'd pay to see one of Picards nephews pick up a Starfleet commission so I could ask how his Uncle is doing back on the family Vineyard.

Bringing back old faces ties people into the IP more than just the ships, even one named Enterprise.

Honestly, a lot of the Deferi comments almost seem directed internally back at Cryptic. Like they're making fun of their own pre-launch ideas. I'd have to look up the specific quotes but they set my"metaphor radar" off.

Don't forget we also get the Hylasa (Who also pop up at times as Random NPC's)A two armed two legged Alien who wears clothes from the same place as the Undine...I hope Cryptic updates them later to make them look more Alien like the Undine do and less like an Alpha Quadrant alien.

Characters aside.. I think ships too deserve some attention:

    1. Why in the world is a Connie still space worthy in 2409?? We should mothball her and put her into a museum.
    2. Galaxy class... BORING
    3. Amabassador class.. BORING
    4. Excelsior.. Need I say more?!?!

I want cooler and more futuristic ships like oddy/regent/armitage.. not the old kirk's garbage boat.

    Bring on the flame :)
