So I've got permission from the house's 'Minister of Finance' to spend on some pixels. As I've already got the escort side of things settled, I shall buy a cruiser.
What's the latest consensus about these two? Which should I go for?
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
I'd go with whatever you feel best in: big cruiser or big sci ship. Honestly though, and in my opinion, if you are really torn, and can only buy one. I'd wait until we know more about the Vesta. Then you can better make up your mind.
i know oddys get beat up a lot here on the forums, but i swear by them.
I bought Oddypack also and don't regret.
When you see someone is spitting on Oddy it usually means "OMG I didn't get an instawin ship that can solo against 10 others!".
This doesn't mean that Vesta isn't a better choice, so be patient. Do some dailies, replay some missions, grind dil... Vesta will soon be here, no need to rush anywhere.
However, I would wait until some more specs are available on the Vesta. So far as I know they should be out in a few days. According to the Tribble sub-forums, they've already got some beta testers on Tribble using them - you might get some preliminary and very subject-to-change stats on them.
Vesta has a shot of being a super ship with its heavy cannon mounting. Also if I had to guess I'd say its probably gonna get a 3 pack just like the Odysseys.
But the Odyssey is a super cruiser, It can tank, support heal, or run a mean tac heavy single cannon build.
So basically wait a week or two to hear the Vesta's stats and then see how well it can make use of those heavy cannons. Look for a base turn rate of 9 or better for a really good fit for them and the ability to run cannon skills back to back while not needed would make it a far better ship. So if the vesta shows up with a turn rate of 11 and a ltcmd tac I'd get it over the Odyssey. Other than that its gonna be a choice between which one follows your playstyle better.

Oh god I hope not, there is no reason it should be in a 3 pack...the 3 pack for the Oddy and Bort were special...the Vesta is just another ship on the line compared to them and I hope they keep it that way.
yeah , the vesta class from the books has twin cannons mounted under its bow , and seeing as its being shoehorned into science , its a science ship with dual cannons. whether these will be normal or heavy cannons isnt confirmed yet though
though from what ive heard thrown about by devs , dual and dual heavy are counted as the same when it comes to weapon slots , so i suppose it can use either
I'll be running the vesta with a weapons setup exactly the same as the orb weaver i use atm , 4 beam arrays , tholian torp up front and a tric launcher aft , since thats all centered around the cc abilities
a cannon build could be done with the vesta , but you'd need at least one dual beam bank or a beam array on the rear for subsystem targeting and it'd never be as strong as an escort ,
i suppose a tactical captain could make use of the raid fire abilities if it has a universal or tactical Lt Cmdr slot though
yeah , it all depends on its stats , its not something ill be trying myself , but if the turn rate is at least as good as the sovereigns , which it should be since its pretty much the same size and mass , it could work , especially with rcs/ the temporal console
Nah , if the base turn rate is less than 8 you really cant keep the cannons on faster moving targets and you turn around from strafing takes forever. In an excelsior with single cannons you can just barely keep escorts in the field of fire by using all sorts of tricks reverse turn aux to dampeners and attack pattern alphas. Also RCS consoles really fall off on how much they boost turn rate at lower base numbers, the difference between 7 and 8 at end game is about a degree. So most fed cruisers have to mount 2 RCS to get the same boost as 1 on an Excelsior same'ish between excelsior and negh'var.
personally 9 is the lowest turn rate I would put heavy cannons on and expect to keep a bead on anyone.

i have all the cool ships and still use my oddys frequently because they always perform well in whatever mission, STF, etc.

i am a tac officer and do very will with my tac oddy and my sci oddy is great too.
