My personal list of pvp advisors

With the amount of misinformation being generated by certain individuals when it comes to pvp, i thought i'd create points of reference for other veterans & newcomers to pvp.

Hopefully, this list will grow to include other specialist / specific topics.

I am also open to suggestions for this post.

Here are the list of people who defined pvp related things for me and helpped me improve.

Healers:
Bieber
Era

These guys are the best in game at healer/suppression dps combinations.
Although lately, the engi has been "nerfed" so to speak, i'm sure they'll be back.
If these chaps give you advice, be sure to listen.
Bieber can be reached via the "sad Panda Cubs" channel for help and advice.
Era, not seen him in game properly for a few weeks. (Dont want him to leave)

Escorts:
MT
Jedi Master Yoda
Aythani
Thales (Thanks for the reminder Husanak)

MT is pretty much a 1 man wrecking crew. If there is anything you want to know about optimal dps, he's your man. Again, he can be reached via "Sad Panda Cubs" channel for help.
Jedi is one of the best dualers (1v1) in game. He is very good at adapting quickly to the opponent.
Aythani hasn't been spotted for a while now sadly.
Thales is one of the best team player game calling escorts i know. As an overall premade player, few if any come close. He defines silent but deadly :)

Science:
Sad Pandas
Linty
Mai Kai

Even before i was a Panda, i remember being sci'd to death in seconds. Remember the grav wells? I know i did. Again the Pandas can be reached via "Sad Panda Cubs"
Linty sadly doesnt play as much anymore.
Mai Kai can be reached in game if you spot him about :)

Torpedo knowledge:
For me without doubt, it has to be Husanak. He got me using torpedos. Before him, i thought they were useless in game and only had use in RPing.

Log Parsing specialists:
Hilbert (Need i say more?)

Allrounders (Put these guys in anything and they are still better than good in premades):
Fallout23
Hilbilly Hilbert :)
The little Australian fella, Tick mister Tick0 (Good shout Jam0)
Alex (VoidSiren)

Carriers:
Teapower (Take Husanaks word for it. Dont need anymore than that)
Alex (VoidSiren)

Fail PVP build master:
................ You can fill in the blank :)

In game troll master:
The one, the only, Shake & Bake, run that mouth Ricky Bobby :p (Although there is a new contender to this emerging)

Remember guys, this is my personal opinion, nothing more. Also, there are numerous people in game who i bounce ideas off who i have not mentioned. I have only mentioned those who i believe defined / re-invented that particular aspect of the game or been advised by other people who i believe to be reliable.

With the relevant permission, i will update this thread with proper contact details.

I've got a bunch of helpful information from some guy named Archived Post - but I think he's got multiple personalities, because sometimes he posts TRIBBLE. I also think he's a plagiarist, because I could have sworn I saw other folks post the same info first...

Probably no one remembers them, their names was Wes and Piper. Learned so much from them. Since tac and eng career never caught my eyes 100%, can speak for those. But I would vote for MT and Era. Anyways, the craziest/tuffest sci crew was Fista sistas, those dam mofas. And of course Linty. Mai too. Those two are jack of all trades. I haven't seen any other scis, at least half as good as them. Cept the one who only heal..which ...should be...engis job. Cheers!

STO is the first game I ever PvP'd in. There was one guy who was very cool to me in my early days and helped me over the initial shock. I found this laying around the archives:

It's awesome to have good people to ask if you want to. But isn't that like... having someone else solve a riddle for you?

    But anyway, cool thread.
Soph, as this thread is not one to garner dev attention anyway, and would not subsequently suffer from the derails caused by responding to you, I'm going to field this one.

I have, in the past, compared this game to martial arts.

I think you would do well to find yourself a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or other submission wrestling school and devote yourself to training there for, say, six months. You will find that you are unable to become proficient without the ability to tap out, that is, to acknowledge that you have been worked into an untenable position without any hope of escape and that further struggle will only result in bodily injury.

The mindset of someone who practices against resisting opponents in submission martial arts includes seeking after those who are their betters. They find someone who can whip them, then going back time and again until they understand what is being done until their own inefficiencies have been wrung out of their game.

I don't think you're from the U.S. so let me give you a snapshot of the mostly American Ultimate Fighting Championship. In the early 1990's it started up and there were loads of kung-fu masters, ninjas, and redneck dojo owners queuing up, along with some wrestlers, judo practitioners, kickboxers, and everything in between. And we were really excited because we would finally see these guys who gave lessons like "Now I can't hit you with this blow because it would kill you, so keep that in mind" actually have to put up or shut up. To a man, these McDojo redneck pajama ninjas found their deadly aura shattered and their profession rendered ridiculous.

Fast forward to present day. Most UFC fighters have one area that is stronger than others, but none are one-dimensional. Nobody ignores grappling training because they're a better puncher than everybody else. It's understood that you have to acquire certain fundamentals to compete at a high level. Nobody from tae kwon do or wing chun enters the UFC because that's been done, that question has been answered. Nobody says, my martial art is really fun, so I'm going to enter the UFC because if it's fun it's valid.

The UFC is 20 years in, STO is 1000 days in. So in answer to your question, no, it's not like having someone else solve a riddle for you. It's saying, "Hi, I've been doing some really fun things with NPCs in this game, but it seems ineffective against a thinking, resisting opponent. Instead of me wasting time trying to invent the wheel, could you tell me how you got yours looking so round and rolly?"

And it's totally cool t see it that way. It's just not the only way to see it. As I wrote, it can also be seen as a riddle.
A riddle has a final answer. Once you know the answer, you're done, and maybe on to the next riddle. It removes the human element to treat PvP this way.

Treating PvP as you would a martial art acknowledges that, although there are "answers" as far as effective builds, the acquisition of skill is an ongoing process which contains a human element.
    sophlogimo wrote: »
...just throw in a single short hint that there are alternative ways of looking at it, which are just as valid.
They are valid in the sense that everyone is entitled to their opinion. If by valid you mean an approach which produces an equally proficient player, then no, they are less valid.

Unlike other individuals who think they know all, i have no issues in saying i know nothing about this aspect of the game as currently i have no interest in it.

Thereby i am unaware of any individual mastered in this particular subject matter of pet spam pooping machines ;)

I'm sure someone who thinks they know will pipe up to claim he knows thereby implying he is a master of that particular aspect of the game yet we all know that the unmentioned person knows nothing more than the average STO Kirk.

    Still with me??....lol

In the same analogy of Red Ricky, how can you fill a cup full of STO Kung Fu which is already full the Kirk phenomenan.

I would second Yoda and for me personally Logan Williams (Lady Feklhri) for all their help when I was first learning to PvP.

Much could be learned back in the day in Ker'rat from them - just sitting there dead, eating popcorn, watching them fight, and listening to the advice they gave...

...oddly, in a sense - I miss the ol' Ker'rat for that - when it was crowded with folks farming Dil; there were often nifty tidbits of advice one could find there.

A long while back I was paired with Horizon in a queue game, and seeing him absolutely terrorize a five-man premade (to the point where they were frantically spamming heals and refused to leave the herd) had a huge impact on me and the way I saw the game.

There are a lot of very high quality pvpers out there that Naz did not mention who are exceptional players in multiple fields. It's all a matter of perspective, the people naz listed are the ones that has played with or plays with currently on a regular basis.

Also, and please don't take this as a disrespect against you or anything, but simply creating a thread to help people does not automatically make you the preeminent authority on the subject to everyone, if that were the case then Mav would be listed in the cruiser and sci sections, and Hilbert would be in the escort section, yet they are not. More to the point, there are a number of people out there (such as myself) who also have extensive knowledge about carriers and the other classes as well so don't take the fact that you're not listed as a person shot against you.
