As it states above, this is a monthly article :) it will be posted each month. For new players, it's useful and they may not have seen it past months.

    Cheers,

Agreed, I like the persons idea of doing like Turbine does and putting these "101's" on a tab here on the forums for new players. With the focus of this article being more how to convert purchased zen to dilithium, it is very pushy in getting players money. I feel the pushiness to purchase for this game by Cryptic if becoming far too aggressive and is hurting the little gameplay that is there.

I look at it this way, I agreed to pay a monthly sub again so in order for Cryptic to get me to purchase above and beyond that sub now they had better show some more positive development. When we have all the requisite systems needed for a high profile MMO fixed and in place (full second faction, PvP, good crafting and resource generating systems), ones unique to this MMO (better integration of the Foundry, Exploration), and a much much better QA bug fixing process, I will be more than happy to pay more.

The STO team is making progress and has many talented people capable of a great deal. I just think somewhere in the administrative chain (Producer an up) things are broken and the decision to rush the release content that is buggy, unfinished, and unpolished comes from above their heads. I understand the demand for getting more content out quickly placates the players and their cash flow, but pushing buggy, unfinished, and unpolished content out works counter to that goal and actually deters players which in turn reduces the cash flow. That reduction in cash flow then causes a negative feedback loop of more content with money hooks ---> more aggressive measures to obtain money from players ----> disenfranchising players ----> reduced spending player population
    > reduced cash flow
    > back to the beginning.

Break the cycle!!! Start with at least fixing all the bugs introduced with Season 6 before launching into Season 7.

As it states above, this is a monthly article it will be posted each month. For new players, it's useful and they may not have seen it past months.

and someone thought this actually made sense because....? Aside from making it look like the company is money hungry by constantly throwing the exact same money-related article at everyone (and yes, thats what it is, don't insult us by saying this isn't only about money) it gives the impression that whoever is in charge over there doesn't understand the basic features of a message board. like, you know, the ability to sticky threads

there is a word for constantly reposting the same thing over and over: spam. smart companies don't spam their customers, especially when there is no reason to. smart people don't claim its a good idea either. someone needs a talking to over there

what you are doing is nothing more than spam. there is an academy section for new players. the only reason you would even consider doing this in the first place is for new players, its not relevant to anyone else. therefore common sense says post a sticky there with this information. that is all that is needed. anything else is the literal definition of spam - which, last time I checked is against the rules around here.

or is this a case of do what I say, not what I do? hmm? because handing out infractions when people do exactly what you yourself are doing isn't likely to go over well. I know i'm going to have something to say the next time someone accuses me of 'spam'

It does seem to make more sense to add them as a sticky in the forums rather than posting the exact same article over and over and over. It just seems very unnecessary since there are so many ways to earn dilithium and the 101 doesn't really go as in depth as it probably should. It it's going to be a monthly titled 101, would it be possible to instead have each month be specifically about a certain way to get it? One month could be mining, the next could be about a specific KDF Sortie or daily, and the month after could be a fed side daily.

I'm not a hard core grinder, so i don't sit there and max out the dilithium for all my characters, but i would be interested in reading about the various ways in more detail so i could find the one that best suits my play style.

Technically a 101 should only be done once but telling people how to make the dilithium and only really telling them how to convert into Zen is only part of the process. Stick it as a sticky or add a new section every month on way of earning dilithium. STS's Dalies etc. Maybe adding some helpful tips for gaining more dilithium then you would get less complaints and would help the new players more

I'm playing the game for a few weeks now and I still feel a newb as each day I discover something new.
The problem is - what I've read today in the link here on Wizard101... Um on Pirates101... No... It's Dilithium101 after all.. The article didn't explain to me anything I didn't see elsewhere in first few days I've started the game. There are more thorough threads on this very forum about dilithium than this bloglike text.

I mean... Let's see a part of the article, me as a newcomer critic:
Dilithium is primarily earned by completing in-game missions (PvP and PvE dailies, events, STFs, Duty Officer Assignments etc.), and is awarded as Dilithium Ore. Players can also go mining for Dilithium Ore once per day on the Vlugta Asteroid Field, near Deep Space Nine, in the Beta Ursae Sector Block.
First of all, the mining mission/event is not the only one where a player can earn daily dil. Why "unofficial" three Eta Eridani missions aren't also mentioned separately for example? Yes, those three that you don't see in "available missions" like the mining event/mission. I wouldn't know they exist at all if I didn't read a certain thread about those here on the forum.

Also I believe the article author just "adores" Starfleet Academy scanning for dil. event like every single one of us, so he skipped mentioning it separately. Good move! Less ppl know about it, less frustrated they'll be afterwards. ;)

But then again, a newcommer should see here a complete list of dilithium PvE missions, not just this short notice and practically "I toldya so don't ask more questions and get off my back" article stance.

STFs? Newcomers are not playing STFs. They - can't. STFs should be mentioned, of course, but at the end of the article.

Detailed list of dil. earning DoFF assignments is not needed, so the article writer did a good choice not listing them there, instead he just mentioned them. Why? Newcomers won't go for those assignments until they evolve a good doff roster. Their priority will be getting more and better DoFFs, and practically an advanced user with plenty of blues and purples will probably be interested on dil. assignement list, which makes such list unwanted here.

Dil->Zen and vice versa conversion is explained great.
But one thing is not mentioned I've seen somewhere a few days ago. I'm not sure if it works or not as game is always changing, but IIRC if a player has a few toons, he can send dil from one character to another by converting it to ZEN as one toon and then converting ZEN to dil on another char. Maybe I remember it wrong, sorry.

So a suggestion if new players are the targeted audience - the article should get rewritten, a few things added/explained better and with details on at least a few example missions. In current form the article explained just "a tip of an iceberg". I'm aware some will say "go to stowiki for details", but c'mon. This is the official forum where essential things should be a quality read, it's not a fanbase where for example you'll get hints on how to grab max dilithium on mining event.

I still wish they explain the Dilithum Exchange better, it still is confusing even after all this time. And I'm not going to experiment with money in figuring it out.

Gold members also have a special perk that allows them to refine Dilithium automatically upon logging in, up to one previous week?s worth

never works for me as it always says failed to convert :(

That's the 101 part. Also keep in mind, that the Home page is where many potential players start to get a sense of what the game is like before spending resources to try it out (like the absolute minimum requirements of HD space and time). Ultimately, it's not only a form of advertisement, it literally is the starting point for new players to then conduct due diligence and learn more themselves. As a new player myself it was just the start I needed. I took it upon myself to go to the Wiki for further details. Nevermiond the time I spent on trial and error :D

But ... this is what happens here more often than not (along with a lot ... A LOT ... of complaining).
