I am almost at Captain rank-wise. But I am having trouble deciding what ship class to unlock next.
I like being able to have powerful shields, but I also like dishing out a lot of damage. I was leaning towards the Long Range SV. How is the armament on it, since I notice it only has one less weapon slot than the Exploration cruisers. Also, how do the shields compare?

The Intrepid-class has more shield modifiers than the Galaxy but sacrifices that by having a weaker hull than the Defiant. The Intrepid also has high rank science BOffs while the Galaxy has high rank engineering BOffs.
So to speak, the Intrepid can help support and debuff enemies but usually is at the back of your team while the Galaxy tanks and takes all the damage.
Both of them are very supportive ships but are different in personality.

I'll go with the Galaxy I guess. Thanks for the help. *Warp 9, engage*
Are you an ENG or SCI captain? If SCI you are better off with the Intrepid as you get the better shield modifer and the ship turns much faster than the Galaxy which is a space barge. You can get a good bit of DPS out of the Intrepid as well as it stays on target consistently enough to use dual beam banks and beam overload.
Another thing to note, the Exploration Cruiser can't turn for TRIBBLE, and is big, fat, and slow, but makes up for it with tankiness. The Intrepid is nimble and smaller, but squishy. As was stated before me, keep her shields up and you're golden. But if you take an unlucky phaser hit and your shields drop for even a tiny amount of time, you're a goner.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once.

I am a SCI officer. But, with all the talk about having to keep the shields up all the time(and the fact I have used cruisers from the start), I am getting the Galaxy.

Well, losing shields is bad - be it escort, sci, or Abrams tank... Although Intrepid seems squishy, with the shields up it's as sturdy or in a sense sturdier than the Galaxy, IMO. Boils down to your preference of playstyle in any case tho.
I'm an engi captain that has been using the LRSV to great effect, once you are able to unlock miracle worker and any DMG resistance and upgraded hull integrity, it can be quite tanky, plus your BOffs in science can really help with keeping your enemies off balance, gravity well in particular is quite effective, and coupled with tractor beam, can really help in tackling far larger ships.
Once your shields are down, it can be a real pain, but having a BOff with tactical team and power to shields, coupled with re-modulate can get your shields back. The LRSV is probably one of the more balanced science vessels out there since it has a slight engineering focus to it as well. Just my 2 cents.

Put 2 Emergency Power To Weapons 1 and 2 Emergency Power To Shields 2 on your Galaxy and alternate between them every 15 seconds (keybinding them all to the spacebar helps). That will give you lots of shield durability and a moderate shield heal every time it cycles, plus enough weapons energy to get decent damage out of the 5-6 beam arrays you should be running. Basically, if shields are your problem, sci ships have lots of shields and good heals, but cruisers never drop shields in the first place (because of that EPTS cycling).
