Dbb setup

Hi, am currently running all AP dbb fwd on my recon sci, but find that they are....lacking, for want of a better term.
How do i get the best out of these seeing i cant equip DHC?
Was thinking of going with beam overload, combined with EPtW, EPS tranfer and batteries, would the drain still be too much?
Also would the sheild drain of tet beams be better for this particular setup?
And finally, as my turn rate is high with rcs, am thinking of swapping my 2 AP BA and quantum torp aft, to 1 BA and 2 Tric launchers aft, my reasoning being fly in beams blazing, hitting with Tachyon beam and possibly CPB, get the sheilds down, hit with beam overload, then turn and drop in the trics.....

Any advice on this is much appreciated.

Have you considered doing a rapid fire transphasic build with projectile boffs. that would help you bypass shields and not worry about weapon power levels.

You can also use 2 parts of the breen set giving an extra 30% transphasic damage on top of the 3 tac consoles.

You can kill a ship with the shields up.

What power levels are you running? Which ship?

BO + EPtW or Weapons Battery is a pretty good combo, but keep in mind the cooldowns of those. There are DOffs with a chance of reducing EPt abilities, I've heard of high power beam ships running those DOffs stacked along with 2x EPtW.

Not sure on the mines, and the answer will likely depend on what you're doing (STF, PvP, or Fleet PvE?)

Currently have my power lvls fairly balanced, little bit extra to weapons and aux.
Exclusivly STF and PVE at the moment.
Ship is recon sci, and i am eng, hence having eps transfer available as well.

I am using the orb weaver with two DBBs and one quantum forward and three turrets on the rear.

Tac team 1 will allow you to always face your target and with the right healing...I was able to tank a cube in khittomer!

I use torpedo spread 3, ts2, beam overload 1 in addition to the tac team. EPtS 1, EPtW 2, EPtW 3, polarize hull1, transfer shield strength2, tractor beam repulsor ?, and gravity well3.

It works well...not as good as my kar'fi which is the target for my orb weaver to match.

One thing you guys overlooked...are his skill points in the right place?

To get more out of AP weapons, you need to maximize your chance of crits. Make sure you have Starship Targeting Systems and Energy Weapon Specialization trained up well.

Ok, my boff skills are as follows...
tac team 1, torp spread 1 and 2
    EPtS 1, ENG team 2
    sci team 1, tachyon beam 2 X2, GW 1 and 2 and CPB 2
skill points are evened out over weapons and sci skills

cheers mate, will be on a bit later today, hope your still around, i am in OZ so dont know how that works for you....
To all posters cheers for all the comments appreciate them, but my original question remains unanswered.... will this specific setup work, someone out there must have tried it or something similar, any feedback would be good...... otherwise its continue down the trial and error path, which is a bit time consuming in game...

Alright, pulling together what you've said, your current build looks something like:

    Fore: 3xDBB (AP)
    Aft: 2xBA (AP), 1xQuantum

    Shield: ?
    Deflector: ?
    Engine: ?

    BOFFS
    SCI Cmdr - Sci Team1, TachBeam2, GravWell1, GravWell2
    SCI LtCmdr - SciTeam1, TachBeam2, ChargeParticleBurst2
    TAC Lt - TacTeam, TorpSpread2
    TAC Ens - TorpSpread1
    Eng Ens - EPtS1, EngTeam2

    CONSOLES
    Tacx3 ?
    Engx2 RCS, ?
    Scix4 ?

A few question marks still, but it helps to see the whole picture.

Here's some suggestions about some ways to put a better build together, but it uses Disruptors. There's probably some better ways to go total 'drain', but I prefer the Disruptor debuff, 'cause it helps everyone on team do better damage. I've seen some other builds that started with Tetryon, then found they did a little better with Disruptor. I'm sure someone else will point out a better way to do a drain build.

Fore: 2xDBB (Disruptor or Tertyon), 1xTorp
Aft: 3xTurret (matches fore energy type)

    Shield: MACO
    Deflector: MACO
    Engine: Borg

    BOFFS
    SCI Cmdr - PolarizeHull, SciTeam2, ParticleBurst2, GravWell3
    SCI LtCmdr - HazardEmitter1, TxferShieldStrength2, TachyonBeam3
    TAC Lt - TacTeam, BO2
    TAC Ens - TorpSpread1
    Eng Ens - EPtS1, ReverseShieldPolarity

    CONSOLES
    Tac: 2xEnergy type, 1xTorp type
    Eng: Neutronium, Borg Console
Sci: Field Generator, 3x Flow Capacitors*

Now..to drain or not to drain? I don't know with that ship, I haven't played it enough (I got tired of it blowing up...but I probably didn't build it very well back then). My sense is that since it is the more escort-y of the sci ships, its better to focus on damage than the clever science toys.

So, if instead of drains, you focus on particle damage (*3x Particle Generators): what to replace that Tachyon beam with? Whatever sounds fun...I'd probably stick Grav Well 1 in .

    Other thoughts:
    - You don't really need that RCS in STF/PVE. Recon Sci turns fine.

    - You MUST keep your shields reinforced...Recon has too little hull to worry about anything other than 1 Hazard Emitter to keep it held together while you get out of range of whatever is killing you. Running 2 copies of Transfer Shield Strength 2 might not be a bad idea.

    - 3 turrets in back because I like having all available damage possible heading where I'm pointing. Especially in a nimble ship like that.

    Skills:
    - If you stick with the APs, you MUST train up Targeting Systems (I'd say to 9), and Energy Weapon Specialization (at least to 6) to improve your crit chance, because APs only benefit you when you crit: I let my Tac captain have those, but use Disruptors on my Eng and Sci.

    - In your Science System Skills, train the first two Shield skills (Emitters/System) up to 9. Train Particle up to 9, or up to 6 and put those 3 points in Graviton Generators to give Grav Well a little more pull. If you REALLY REALLY wanna do drains, train Flow Capacitors to 9.

    - Other skills i'd mention: Structural Integrity to 9, and Armor Reinforcements to 6 if you can, to help you hold your meager Recon Sci hull together a little longer.

Hope some of this ends up being helpful, but i'm sure there are some folks out there MUCH more experienced than I with that ship who can probably suggest some better builds.
